David Byrne and Brian Eno - Strange Overtones

(2095 Points, 10 Votes, One #1 Vote)

US Chart Position
: #14 (Triple A)

UK Chart Position: n/a

Prefix Mag Review: It's been nearly over 30 years since we last heard from David Byrne and Brian Eno together -- but now they are back in full force with their upcoming record Everything That Will Happen Will Happen Today. The first single, "Strange Overtones," is classic meets current -- the filtered synthesizers are in place, the funky layered beats are thumping, and the guitars are screaming.

Over the course of 30 years, Eno's main duty has been manning the production position, and the evidence is clear on this recording -- the mix on this track is absolutely stellar and highlights one of the best Byrne vocal performances in years. When these guys get together it's the culmination of two of the world's most consistent and important innovators - "Strange Overtones" is hopefully only the beginning. They'll ask for your e-mail and zip code, but don't fret - it's worth it.

Annie - I Know UR Girlfriend Hate Me

(2125 Points, 19 Votes)

US Chart Position
: n/a

UK Chart Position: #54

Digital Spy Review: 'I Know Ur Girlfriend Hates Me' - now there's a title to get the cogs whirring. Why does she hate you? What on earth did you do to her? Who's more at fault here? Well, it all started when this blonde, pretty pop singer called Annie started spending a bit too much time with the jealous lass's boyfriend...

The lyrics may have a bitter edge - "Girl you think you're something but have I got news for you", Annie scoffs at one point - but musically this is sweet, scrumptious electropop that's nearly as moreish as 'Chewing Gum', Annie's nearly-hit from a few years back. To be perfectly honest, if Annie does everything in life with this much panache, you can't blame the poor girlfriend for getting a bit paranoid.

4/5

Usher - Love In This Club (feat. Young Jeezy)

(2135 Points, 11 Votes)

US Chart Position
: #1

UK Chart Position: #3

randb.about.com Review: Usher is back, folks. That's right, Usher Raymond IV is getting ready to drop a new album later in 2008 and here's the first single, "Love In This Club," featuring the rapper Young Jeezy. I don't know about you, but I haven't completely warmed up to this song yet. It's an okay song, but singing about making love in a nightclub sounds more like an R. Kelly move than an Usher one. Also, the production, which is by Polow Da Don, sounds too much like a cheap knockoff of Timbaland's style. I dunno, maybe the song grows on you after awhile.

One Of Us Will Live To Rue The Day We Met Each Other

Wire - One of Us

(2200 Points, 8 Votes)

US Chart Position
: n/a

UK Chart Position: n/a

Pitchfork Media Review: As superficially thrilling as the Read & Burn era was, it was hard to shake the feeling that Colin Newman was making a very conscious attempt to create music that belied his age-- not so much rebutting those who would dare question his band's relevance as drowning them out. Strange then to hear him address the subject so directly on this early track from Object 47. "Are you an also-ran, finished and inconsequential?" he asks over a sleek, Hook-ish bass line. The words suggest resignation, but everything else indicates that the question is purely rhetorical: Wire is in knowing command here. The guitar volleys may not swarm and sting, but they no longer need to, as all members pitch in to do their part. There's no denying that "One of Us" lacks the visceral punch of 00s Wire, but its impression lingers long after-- proof that relevance isn't always measured in direct proportion to volume.

Empire of the Sun - Walking On A Dream

(2204 Points, 12 Votes)

US Chart Position
: n/a

UK Chart Position: n/a

thedwarf.com.au Review: Empire of the Sun, Pnau’s Nick Littlemore and Luke Steele from The Sleepy Jackson’s side project is a pleasant surprise. All those sci-fi posters around town got me wondering, who the hell are these guys? Hey isn’t that Luke Steele?

It’s a collaboration that has been a long time coming. The boys seamlessly combine Steele’s unique vocals and Sleepy Jackson’s sense of groove with PNAU’s ever danceable beats. Walking on a Dream was an incredible choice for first single, as it fills the room with psychedelia I feel the urge to find a field and dance around, arms flailing in the air . It’s easily a danceable track but also has a refreshing lazy Sunday feel about it which I assume will ensure it gets excessive airplay during the summer (hopefully not an overload because there is nothing worse than getting sick of a genuinely good song).

The obvious comparison is MGMT; both channel a psychedelic sound and image (most prominently through their music videos) and create incredibly infectious electronic tracks. While MGMT is filled with a little more excitement and complexity, Empire of the Sun is a little more laid back in their approach. Strong bass but lazy vocals keep it a step back from your typical dance tunes.

Bon Iver - Skinny Love

(2270 Points, 11 Votes)

US Chart Position
: n/a

UK Chart Position: n/a

sageturk mog.com Review: Maybe it's the air, the weather, the cold... maybe it's something internal, some deep broken piece that never quite healed right... regardless, the newest album from Bon Iver hits like a quiet, gentle punch to the heart.

Honestly, without reservation, as far as acoustic, high-pitched, threadbare folk goes - this is the best new song i've heard all year.

I don't want to say any more. get on some headphones and listen to this track already. If it doesn't bring out the beardy, weepy folkster inside of you, i don't know what will.

Glasvegas - Geraldine / The Prettiest Thing on Saltcoats Beach / Everybody's Gotta Learn Sometime

(2278 Points, 12 Votes)

US Chart Position
: n/a

UK Chart Position: #16

cokemachineglow Review: Glasvegas was handpicked to open Echo & the Bunnymen’s recent New York City performance of Ocean Rain (1984). Presumably this was because the frontmen of both bands fashion themselves as cooler-than-thou motherfuckers with a predilection towards wearing sunglasses indoors, but also because Glasvegas are NME’s new IT Band, riding a furious wave of British hype unseen since, uh, Arctic Monkeys? Kasabian? Starsailor? Take your pick.

Most often described as “fuzz-pop” and sporting a moniker suggesting equal amounts nu-metal and electroclash, yours truly showed up early for the Bunnymen gig in hopes that Glasvegas would supply some dirty, Jesus & Mary Chain-style hedonism. Instead, Echo fans got a quartet of particularly yelpy pups armed with the singular idea of re-casting Doves’ “The Cedar Room” in as many keys as possible.

And that describes “Geraldine” in a nutshell, a teary-eyed knock-off from a band that desperately wants to be thought of as “important.” Loud and strident while utterly devoid of substance, “Geraldine” is exactly the type of Brit-pop smash that, like Starsailor’s “Good Souls” or JJ72’s “Oxygen,” sends the music tabloids into a tizzy lasting just long enough for the ill-fated sophomore record to slip in and drop. Everything is in its proper place: the guitarist plays two swelling chords over a rudimentary march while lead vocalist James Allan alternately coos and spits out hiccupy (and likely auto-tuned) verses like, “I will be that angel on your shoulder / My name is Geraldine / I’m your social worker!” (she’s got an MSW?). “Geraldine” is hardly subtle, sounds like a dozen better bands, and is extremely British; I’d probably have loved it eight years ago, but now I just don’t give a shit.

Young Jeezy - Put On (feat. Kanye West)

(2295 Points, 12 Votes)

US Chart Position
: #12 (Hot 100), #1 (Hot Rap Tracks)

UK Chart Position: n/a

rap.about.com Review: Though I've listened to "Put On" a million times, I still occasionally have to remind myself that it's Jeezy featuring Yeezy, not the other way around. Kanye outshines his host, thanks, in part to *surprise* Auto-Tune.

Jeezy kicks off the song with ho-hum boasts about being his city's rap ambassador. When a break beat finally sets up Kanye's robo-voice entrance, you're almost thankful to get a break from Jeezy's monotonous chops. Ye's verse packs just enough wit to keep you hooked, but doesn't venture any further.
