Weezer - The Greatest Man That Ever Lived (Variations on a Shaker Hymn)

(6481 Points, 20 Votes, Five #1 Votes)

US Chart Position
: n/a

UK Chart Position: n/a

SOMB Says: Weezer - "The Greatest Man That Ever Lived (Pt. 2)"

["Pour Some Sugar On Me"-like drumbeat]

I don't think that you like me very mu-uch
I can tell by the way you grab my clu-utch
You say that you just wanna make me ma-ad
Well guess what, I just went and told your da-ad

We can make love forever if you'd like
But to me, you're just a silly-billy tyke

(And I don't mean a lesbian!)

[Drum beat slowly speeds up to driving rock tempo, bass kicks in with a one-note pattern]

Why is it so hard
Just to be honest with my friends
I wanna tell them that I love them
But what if
Just maybe
Possibly
They only want me for my ennnnds
Only want me for my ennnnnds
WELL I GUESS IT ALL DEPEEEEEEENNNNNNNDS!!!!!!

[Bass and guitar play matching triplet scales up and down penatonic scale, tempo gets faster and faster until guitar lets out one wailing note and rest of instruments drop out. Drums return, playing a gently rocking ska-tempo)

Some-tiiiimes
I sit just sta-ring at the wall
And tryyyyyy
To get the nerve up just to call
You uuuppppppp
Hear your soft voice come on the line
And say "suppppppp"
"Damn girl you're prob'ly looking fine"

[Rhythm gets nervous]

But there's,
Al-ways
Something that goes wrong
I drop,
the phone,
And burst out into SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONNNNNNNNNNNNGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG

[Guitar turns furious, trombone becomes steadily more audible until it becomes indistinguishable with bass line]

NOBODY UNDERSTANDS THE SHIT THAT I DEAL WITH
SO I THINK I'M GONNA GO AND PLEAD THE FIFTH
MY PARENTS ALWAYS SAID THAT I WAS BRIGHT
BUT I GUESS I GOTTA PROVE IT NOW TONIGHT

[Everything but bass drops out, which is now playing the bass line to "Monkey Gone to Heaven." Vocal is now spoken]

You know what I'm getting at, right?
I mean, she even told my co-workers everything
When I walked in and saw them chatting by the water cooler
I knew it was only a matter of time

All the nooks and crannies of my soul where she once resided
Gave it all away like a birthday present without a ribbon
But I guess that's just what happens, isn't it?
Next time, it won't be me who's footing the bill

[Bass slows down to a stand-still]

Get 'em, Jay.

[Jay-Z enters, beat now resembles N.O.R.E.'s "Nothin" as produced by Andrew Weatherall]

Yess
Young Hov with the Dub-E-Z (Hov!)
And you know them hos ain't got no files on me
If I told my man Rivs once I told him hundred-thousand times
Ladies love it when you roll that shit just like the March of Dimes
Greatest man that ever lived? Well know one thing for certain
Ain't none better than ya' boy when he's closing them curtains
When I pull out the jammy, bitches all like "gee, golly"
Singin' "Oooo-eeeee-oooooo, you look just like Buddy Holly!!"

[Main riff enters, entire band claps and foot-stomps in time]

It's not like me to repeat myself
It's not like me to repeat myself
But understand that if you can forgiiiive
I am still the greatest man that ever liiived

It's not like me to repeat myself
It's not like me to repeat myself
But understand that if you wanna tryyyy
Girl I'm still the one that's gonna take you highhhhhhh

Ohhhhh-woooahhhhh (if you wanna tryyyyy
Ohhhhh-woooahhhhh (gonna take you higghhhhh)
Ohhhhh-woooahhhhh (if you can forgiiiiive)
Ohhhhh-woooahhhhh (Greatest man that ever liiiiived)

The greatest man that ever lived
The greatest man that ever lived

Comprende, ese?

[Entire band & Jay start laughing, begins crossfade into next track]

This post doesn't include an mp3 of "Bubbles They Bounce" because it apparently stopped existing on the internet after the actual album came out.

I'm Hoping Perchance, You Might Take This Dance

Hot Chip - Ready For The Floor / Shake A Fist (Diplo's Noise of Art Remix) / Bubbles They Bounce / Ready For The Floor (Smoothed Out On An R&B Tip Version) / Ready For The Floor (Soulwax Dub)

(7439 Points, 27 Votes, Two #1 Votes)

US Chart Position
: n/a

UK Chart Position: #6

SOMB Says: Címon, the second you heard the title of this song you knew it was going to be good. Itís status as live favourite throughout 2007 (in this version or the sexed up R&B version included on the flipside) meant that even as it debuted in a thirty second clip on MySpace excitement was building and by the time the video appeared in late November people were already taking it up as a potential single of the year for 2008. Following the success of The Warning and ever increasing concert venues being filled out the band needed to come back with something big. Squelching and burbling along in a competition with Cut /// Copy to be regarded as air to New Orderís electro-pop smartness crown it evokes the Manchester act not just in itís love for mid-80ís Italo house but itís sweet, impassioned vocal and continuingly shifting melodies and counter melodies as well as a glorious chord change that never fails to illicit a rictus grin as wide as the Jokerís. In fact the release of this song and itís accompanying video were so good itís probably the real reason Heath Ledger died. Ė Mitchell

Estelle - American Boy (feat. Kanye West)

(7509 Points, 32 Votes, Three #1 Votes)

US Chart Position
: #9

UK Chart Position: #1

SOMB Says: What Iíve learned from the song ďAmerican BoyĒ by Estelle featuring Kanye West:

1) Estelle mentions in her first verse how sheís just met a ď5 foot 7 guy whoís just my typeĒ, which clearly means she has no interest in dating anyone with NBA potential. (The sole exception to that may be Mugsy Bogues, who is 5í 3Ē)
2) The song is produced by perennial whipping boy Will.i.am, and even uses a sample from his 2007 solo album (if you are to believe Wikipedia, which I have no reason to doubt). This may be the most impressive thing done heís done. It does not, however, make up for that horrible song he did for Barack Obama.
3) I guess for some reason the track was removed from the Itunes store, even though it looks like I could buy it right now if I want to. Curious.
4) The guy from the Gym Class Heroes doesnít like Kanye Westís verses on this, which incidentally, makes me like it more. I love Westís rhymes on here, especially after hearing him release an album with basically no rapping on it at all.

Look, thereís not a whole lot else I can say about this song. Itís got a smooth beat, Estelleís voice purrs like a kitten driving a Corvette, and Kanye comes in and does what he does bestÖ talk about how great he is. It was a perfect pop song for 2008. Ė MattDrufke

Hercules and Love Affair - Blind (feat. Antony Hegarty) / Blind (Frankie Knuckles Remix)

(7522 Points, 33 Votes, One #1 Vote)

US Chart Position
: n/a

UK Chart Position: #40

SOMB Says: As a child I knew that when I got older everything would fall into place; things wouldn't seem as daunting, as confusing, as overwhelming. When you're an adult you have enough money, enough security, enough love, enough piece of mind. You don't worry about daily confrontations and the answers have all been figured out. Our Jr. High housed grades 6-9. As a sixth grader I looked at the ninth graders and thought how much older and mature they looked. Our High School housed 10-12. As a sophomore I looked at the seniors, marvelling that these young adults roamed the same hallways as us. Once I went to college I thought that after graduation I'd have a secure job, I'd have expendable income. All I had to do was to survive adolescence, survive middle school, survive high school, survive higher education, survive.
As a child I thought these things. Now that I'm older, I can look outside myself and see that these neuroses of ours never leave. As a freshman I didn't have this understood. As a senior I never had all the answers, . I have a secure job but the concerns and anxieties still exist. Antony Hegarty has this figured out, and he makes it sound beautiful. Tim Goldsworthy has this figured out and he turns it into the best dance track of 2008. They achieve this not by turning "Blind" into a morose composition of depression, but a crowning achievement of acceptance. Yes, we'll always have these concerns; but No, it's not the end of the world. Ė without_opinion
