I had this discussion with a few friends today. It's not that the 1980s sucked by any means, it's just that there are a lot of bands/musicians that I'm glad didn't make it into the 1980s, since that's when most kind of started to suck (read: Stones, Rod Stewart, Robert Plant, etc.). Like my friend said, would you really have wanted Hendrix to make it into the 80s? So, a question: Who got better in the 1980s than they were in the 1970s? I'm sure there are plenty, but the only ones we could think of were Prince, The Talking Heads, Tom Waits, and arguably The Clash. Others?

Obvious solo artist answer in pop music would be John Mellencamp, though that wouldn't be a "respectable" choice. For bands, probably Midnight Oil, because they started out a classic rock surfer-dude band.

Also most of Robert Plant's 80's work is really good. Production is dated but the albums are good. IMO.

and arguably The Clash.

No.

Michael Jackson, The Police, The Jam, The Cure, AC/DC, The Specials, Kate Bush, Elvis Costello (maybe), XTC and Pretenders
Nice bowl of Crunchy Nut you got here, pretty expensive as I recall.

There are dozens of post-punk bands that formed in '78/'79 that didn't hit their stride until a year or two later. That's kind of cheating, though.

AC/DC

Really? Back in Black was classic, but which albums after that can compete with the Scott era?

That one is such a towering classic it makes it that versus everything that came before. Not that I would call it for the 80's. Was just throwing it out there.

Blasphemous indeed! I nearly mentioned them, on account of their inauspicious beginnings.

Then I remembered everything on Unleashed in the East. ;)

Wouldn't agree with AC/DC.

In the 70s they put out Highway to Hell, Let There Be Rock, High Voltage and Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap. Apart from Back in Black (which isn't as good as HtH or LTBR), there was nothing too interesting.

Sad Wings, Sinner, Stained Class, and Hell Bent For Leather is an incredible run. But typical Gen Xer that I am, I'm just more attached to the 80s, the British Steel to Painkiller period, inconsistent as it was.

That is true for the albums, no question. But interestingly, when you stack the 70s singles/concert staples against the 80-86 singles, it becomes an even tougher decision, in my opinion.

I fully support people doing drugs on the streets. I'm sick and tired of people being selfish by doing drugs in the privacy of their own homes. Do it on the streets where you can share with your friends and neighbors. It's the Christian thing to do.
