The Fall came out in 2006 at least. List making in this thread is suspect. dot. gif.

I'm not going to post a list this year. The wife and I still watch a lot of movies, but with the newborn we are consistently 6 months behind (I just saw In Bruges and Pineapple Express this week). I haven't seen a single one of the oscar contenders. Accordingly, It doesn't seem right to hand out a number one. That said, I'm printing out Damo's list and gonna try and check off those as they hit the videostore. That looks like quality posting.

Not available in your country or just against being able to watch films whenever you want?

Me. EDIT: Not able to whenever I want.

Which begs the hypothetical...suppose a great "lost" film directed by Orson Welles back in 19?? is found in somebody's attic somewhere and is finally released around the world to great acclaim and whatnot in the year 2008. Would that film be eligible or ineligible?

Torn on adding PBS docs from Frontline and Independent Lens to my list: Boogie Man and Atom Smashers. I know I said no to Boogie Man before but it's tempting to include that on my list. Do these cross the line into TV? People can Netflix them, at least with Atom Smashers you can.

I'm already upset that Paul Blart: Mall Cop will be overlooked in next year's poll because of it's early premiere this year.

with an international message board, why should the movie have opened in Chicago to be eligible to be voted for? Just run the caveat that, if you haven't seen it because it didn't open in your area in that year, that you can vote for it next year?

Because than you'd be splitting votes between years.

I will be voting for Waltz. I'm confident of this, though I have yet to, you know, see it.

I would like to blurb also. I always volunteer for SOMB best of lists and have never been given the chance. Wah wah wah.

What? If I've overlooked this in the past, sorry...no slight meant whatsoever. To make up for it, wanna do 3 blurbs this year? Would love to see blurbs for the top 40.

understandable...it's amazing that I'm still able to see so many movies- about one or two a week after the kiddies go to bed. if you haven't read my first post, check out the scoring part. even if you've only seen a few movies that you think you'd rate a 7.5 or better, just post a list with a score- you're #1 does not have to bias the list so much if you give it a score.

It would indeed be eligible. See 'Killer of Sheep' which was ruled eligible for last year's list (Got a few votes, IIRC) despite being released in 1977.

I would say 'Go For It'. Even with all my trumpeting earlier, I will concede that it is a weak year for high-end movies, so anything that boosts the quality in any way seems like a good reason to vote for it.

I'm already upset that Paul Blart: Mall Cop will be overlooked in next year's poll because of it's early premiere this year.

I'll probably end up voting for it next year. What can I say? Kevin James makes me laugh.

I think we could definitely have a SOMBie-blurbed Top 40, even 50. Some people will be asked to blurb movies that don't make it into their Top 5, which I think might be even more interesting, why some deemed it as good, not great.

Thanks, caley, for helping out with eligibility questions.
As for the Frontline docs, I don't know how to call this. I'm biased this year as I'd love to put Boogeyman on my list.
My wife and I had a rare date Monday afternoon and she wanted to see a comedy- we love Kevin James...but man was Paul Blart awful.

Noticed that I forgot to mention in my first post that:

lists up to 30 will be scored.
...but don't list anything you wouldn't give a 7.5 to.

Not even streaming over PC, TiVo, Roku or d/l via Xbox Arcade and soon PS3?

Huh. What a miserable life it must be to be away from internet.

The Fall came out in 2006 at least.

List making in this thread is suspect. dot. gif.

The Fall was premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2006, but did not receive any sort of distribution until 2008.
Few beings have ever been so impregnated, pierced to the core, by the conviction of the absolute futility of human aspiration. The universe is nothing but a furtive arrangement of elementary particles. A figure in transition toward chaos. That is what will finally prevail. The human race will disappear. Other races in turn will appear and disappear. And human actions are as free and as stripped of meaning as the unfettered movements of the elementary particles. Good, evil, morality, sentiments? Pure ‘Victorian fictions.’ All that exists is egotism. Cold, intact, and radiant.

Michel Houellebecq
