after hearing the first couple songs off this project, the first thing that came to mind was nathan rabin's failure/fiasco/secret success ratings scale. i can't see any way that this record will take off commercially and it seems to me that there's an even smaller chance that this is going to be a critical success either.

the fist song leaked, prom queen, straight up sucks. it's up there with brian wilson's smart girls as a wtf? song. i couldn't dislike this song more had limp bizkit made it in 99. at least then, though, it would've had a chance at cultural acceptance. now, obama era and all, i can't see anyone, even suburban mall kids falling for this mook shtick.



the second song, hot revolver is just as wtf, but is way more listenable:

that it starts off with a rip from basket case is a nice touch for something so obviously wrongheaded. by the end of the track, i kinda got into it. it's clearly a decade behind the times. and maybe lil wayne is escaped from lost island and falling through time, but i have a feeling that this whole rebirth album is going to be a nostalgic throwback to the summer of 99. which would be terrible, but also potentially fascinating.

so, returning to my initial thoughts, failure, fiasco or secret success?

indeed it is. when i first heard about this project, i figured it would be an extended collabo with fall out boy and gym class hero folks. which could have been tolerably meh. this hollow aggro-rock shit is pretty inexcusable. but again, makes me wonder if all the syrup has made wayne unstuck in time. this kinda shit doesn't hold water these days. why?

Prom queen is amazing. Guaranteed smash single so the commercial side is sorted. Can't fathom why anyone would dislike it, really looking forward to the album.

Wayne shoulda got with FallOut Boy. He sounds great, the music not so much. Maybe it'll grow on me though, I dunno. This was a fantastic idea, though, Wayne's got a great voice.
