Well, please then. No disrespect meant. The few random times I've come here before via Google, this board hasn't steered me wrong.

By-Tor: nice mix, thanks!
Tropolist: I see what you did there.

"Juke" ~ Little Walter "Sixteen Tons" ~ Big Bill Broonzy "300 Pounds of Joy" ~ Howlin Wolf "I'm Bad Like Jesse James" ~ John Lee Hooker "Bring It To Jerome" ~ Bo Diddley "Got My Mojo Working" ~ Muddy Waters (but pretty much everything on the Chess Masters Box set is pretty good) actually, singling out songs by the above artists is fairly ludicrous with so many good songs to choose from. and i know that there's got to be some really good versions of "Baby Please Don't Go" out there...not sure which is the best version... i could never really get through all the Robert Johnson recordings due to the sound of them...does "32-20 Blues" really have the lick that sounds like the origin of "The Girl Can't Help It?" because i really like Bob Dylan's version on TellTale Signs and i thought, "That's 'The Girl Can't Help It' lick!" "Motor City's Burning" ~ MC5 there's got to be a Jimmy Reed song i'm missing out on...

Here's the "Blues Starter Kit" mix I give people who are interested in checking out the genre. It covers most of the name-brand influential artists, original/early/definitive versions of songs that were later popularized by rock and pop artists, and is accessible enough to hold someone's attention.

Robert Johnson - Preachin' the Blues (Up Jumped the Devil)
Big Bill Broonzy - Baby Please Don't Go
Magic Sam - Sweet Home Chicago
Leadbelly - The Midnight Special
Staple Singers - Freedom Highway
Junior Wells - Snatch It Back And Hold It
Big Mama Thornton - Hound Dog
Bo Diddley - Bo Diddley
Jimmy Witherspoon - Money Is Getting Cheaper
BB King - The Thrill Is Gone
Hank Ballard & the Midnighters - Look At Little Sister
Buddy Guy - She Suits Me To A Tee
Koko Taylor - Wang Dang Doodle
Elmore James - Dust My Broom
John Lee Hooker - One Bourbon, One Scotch, And One Beer
Howlin' Wolf - Back Door Man
Little Walter - My Babe
Muddy Waters - Got My Mojo Working
Joe Williams - Roll ' Em Pete
Louis Jordan - Choo Choo Ch'Boogie
Sam & Dave - Hold On, I'm Comin'
Slim Harpo - Baby Scratch My Back
Sonny Boy Williamson - I Don't Know
Johnny "Guitar" Watson - Gettin' Drunk
R.L. Burnside - Shake 'Em On Down

and if the disc has enough room...
T-Bone Walker - Tell Me What's the Reason

For proper albums, I'd go with:
the aforementioned Hoodoo Man Blues by Junior Wells
Live at the Regal by BB King
Evenin' Blues by Jimmy Witherspoon
A Swingin' Night at Birdland by Joe Williams

The Chess Box is every bit the treasure you think it will be. Record stores are full of used blues compilations and boxed sets, so you can cover a lot of ground with your dollar.

For contemporary blues, it's hard to beat the Fabulous Thunderbirds' 1979 debut.
You don't need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows.

The blues is where it's at, or at least where it should be. Nice neophyte mix, Eric! And CR-- way to pull out the 'original' versions. (Of course bluesmen, are thieves by profession) I pretty much jsut listed like, my favorite blues songs. I couldtn' decide on Ray Charles, though-- myab "Let's go get stoned"? Hard Times and Lonely Avenue are classics too. My advice to you 2lB-- is to be racist. If you're lookign for the best blues, than simply just look up all the oldest, blackest bluesmen ever. Maybe start with the dead ones first. Oh shit-- almost forgot -- find a version of "Rolling & Tumblin" with Sonny Boy Williamson whatever you do. And I'm going to pile on the Paul Butterfield one more time-- his version of "Mystery Train" with The Band during "the last waltz" is about as good as it gets. Oh for heavens sake! Has anybody said Muddy Waters' "Mannish Boy" yet? That's the one that should be on the satellite going out to the edge of the universe.

I had "Mannish Boy" in my mix. Re: the oldest bluesmen, I tend to agree but it's such a bummer that they haven't tried to remaster Robert Johnson's stuff. Like someone said upthread, it just sounds so unfortunately thin. Chris Whitley's cover of "Hell Hound on my Trail" is way heftier.
