Recap from 4/18:

Seven singers left. Tonight - songs from The Great American Songbook series that Rod Stewart has been doing. On the face of it, this seems like a bad idea. Rod reveals his latest supermodel type of fiancee, who is carrying her new baby and wearing a blouse that makes you think she may start nursing at any point in time.

At any rate, the contestants suddenly have remembered that this competition has at least something to do with singing. And they are primed, based on the results. This week has the best qualities of vocals across the board of any week this season.

Chris starts off with "What a Wonderful World", and actually sings it, rather than, in his own words, belting it out. It works rather well, although it isn't picture perfect, by any means. He sets the tone for the evening, giving notice that tonight is going to be the toughest night to judge. The judges fawn all over him, and Simon tries to take credit for his change in direction, as if Chris had a choice based on the theme for the show. One note, though: Anwar's rendition of this song last year would blow this away.

Paris - does a Billie Holliday impersonation with "These Foolish Things". She's only 17? She flat out nails it. From beginning to end, this is almost flawless. Chris is suddenly in second place for the night.

Taylor - chooses a Sam Cooke song, "You Send Me". Right choice for him - Sam Cooke and Jackie Wilson are about as soulful as anything he could pull off reasonably. He does it fairly well, albeit lifelessly, until the end, where he goes on some manic rant, reminding me of Otis Redding, if Otis had been white, prematurely grey, and not nearly as talented. The judges like it more than I do, which seems to be a season long trend with him.

Elliott - "It Had to be You". This comes off really, really well. Kinds of wanders between Tony Bennett and Harry Connick, Jr. Randy and Paula give their standard praise, and Simon condemns him to the bottom three by telling him his lack of personality will cost him. He will deserve much better than he gets this week, but don't be surprised if he goes home.

Kellie - takes on "Bewitched, Bothered, Bewildered". She looks the part, and the first verse of the song goes extremely well for her, a la Kristen Chenoweth. I'm thinking she needs to keep the nasal, Southern part of her voice out of this...and it goes downhill fast. She loses the timing, she goes flat, she goes sharp, she goes nasal, and it's a train wreck. And worse yet, she knows it. Before the judges can say anything, she whines "I butchered it!". Yeah, you did. And the judges try to blame the song?!?!? Clearly, she isn't going anywhere if they can help it. Bottom three for the first time tonight.

Ace - I'm so rooting for him to suck tonight I can't stand it. Goes with the Gary Cherone in a suit look, which is kind of off-putting. Rod Stewart compliments him as much as Brian May ripped him last week, so I'm guessing Ace slept with him too. Does "That's All", which I immediate associate with Adam Sandler in "The Wedding Singer". Unfortunately, he does a very credible job, other than his freaking boy band falsetto crap that apparently annoys everyone except for Randy Jackson. IMO, he'll be bottom three based on precedent, but Taylor should probably takes his place.

Katharine - sings "Someone to Watch Over Me". The cameraman is obviously in love with her. Heck, even my wife starts gushing about how beautiful she is. Wanting to stay married, I make some grunt that doesn't commit me either way. Anyway, this turns out to be the defining performance of the night. She hits every note, and cements her status as crowd favorite. Simon goes over the top in his praise. Winner of the night, and odds on favorite to win the whole thing.

OK, you need to elaborate on this or have your hearing tested. Kellie was absolutely horrible, and Paris was great.

Paris was back to being her old self. She's got a good voice, but her whole persona is so freakish that I can't praise her. She's not in any way an American Idol or a pop star. She's a future Gospel star, if anything. I thought Kellie sang the song nicely. I didn't really catch her being as awful as even she was claiming. She looked really cute, so perhaps that deflected my hearing her being off. Didn't think she was great, just okay.

Man, Kellie was clearly out of tune during much of her performance. She's clearly not that talented when it comes to singing. She may have a good voice, and the looks don't hurt (I guess) but she was flat-out bad last night. My wife and I are so tired of her and Ace's schtick...they need to leave soon and the very fact they're still on the show speaks to the power of appearances.

Kellie was by far the worst last night, but she'll stick around simply because she's got personality, which Katharine has none. I love her pipes and knew she could sing all along, but last night was the first time I really paid attention to her. Best episode of what's been a pretty lame season so far. We would have had about 3 classic Idol performances at this point in any other year.

i like taylor the best. and elliott. but i can't see either winning. ken and barbie (ace and kellie) need to go. paris is already a semi-pro if i'm not mistaken, so while i've got nothing against her i don't want her to win either. katherine is clearly the favorite and i wouldn't mind if she won. chris? he won't make it to the end and i don't care. any "rocker" who thinks 'higher ground' is a chili peppers original doesn't deserve to make it

He knew it was a Stevie Wonder song. Much like when he used Live's version of "I Walk The Line", he used it to get through a week where the theme didn't fit his strengths.

He knew it was a Stevie Wonder song. Much like when he used Live's version of "I Walk The Line", he used it to get through a week where the theme didn't fit his strengths.

From what I recall, he didn't know "Higher Ground" was a Stevie Wonder song. He serendipitously discovered that the song--which he seemed only to know as a Chili Peppers tune--was written by Stevie, and he was lucky to find that out. I lost quite a bit of respect for him at that point...the remainder went out the window with that horrible Creed tune he "sang".

I don't remember it clearly, but I really thought that he didn't know of the Chili Peppers version, but that he liked the Peppers and found his way into the song that way.

I haven't watched in a few weeks, but Katharine has the repugnant personality of the the overly-animated theater girl that's attractive enough to get lead roles. I'm for Paris.

i was out and didn't see last night's show, but i hear she did spectacular. and she's a super fox to boot. even i'll admit it. if i had a chance, i'd hit that. anyway, i don't think she'll win becuase she's too close to the clarkson. or maybe hse isn't, but i can't imagine her having a popular record. shrug.

everyone i know who watches the show swears that chris will win. i don't get it. i see no talent in him and ever since he sang and professed that creed song as "one of his favourites" ive done nothing but sneer and walk away when he come son the television.

i like taylor a lot. i think he's great, his performances are usually the ones that blow me away or as close to blow me away as american idol can get, plus he's a goofy bastard and i have a soft spot for that. simon predicted taylor would win on one of those ridiculous tabloid tv shows, even though he doesn't want him to and that's good enough for me. he probably won't, but i think he should.

Almost all of the winners except for Kelly Clarkson had voices that were more suited to a specific genre. Fantasia = R&B, Ruben Studdard = R&B, Carrie Underwood = Country. I personally think Paris has a fabulous voice and could sing Gospel, Jazz, Pop, R&B, etc; she is just that good.

i felt that way up until last night. his performance last night had me sold on him and he's def. a contender now. it's like he took his shirt off in the club after stabbing someone and started screaming, "now who else wanna fuck wit Hollywood Park?"

It's not just her voice, but she has no personality to be on the pop charts. She's a nothing.

R&B and Country are both forms of pop music. Gospel is in its own field way out of state. It's too particular for pop sensibilities. What I'm saying is that she is destined for greatness in Gospel and that this isn't the field for her.

Chris is a damn good rock singer who loves popular rock. Not everyone loves or has to love Spoon.
