R.E.M. -- Eponymous

I threw this on the record player last night and it sounded good. I had never noticed before the way that 'Gardening at Night' is sort of remixed on this so the vocals are brought to the front of the mix. Once I noticed this, I didn't like it. Not one bit.

One for James D and Caley. I bought my third copy of Jupiter, this time with the above cool disc. Has a great demo of 'Stained Silver', with a lot more bass guitar and rawness, and a song called 'Bigger Riff', which is a completely different song to 'Big Riff', to the point where I question why they called it that.* And a version of 'Brain Candle', which I think is album version.

* In hindsight, it's a demo of 'Rubber and Glue'.

I only got, like, two weeks until my next name change is allowed. I'll contemplate it.

It's closer to the candy and it still makes the point. I'm dl'ing that Akimbo album for the hell of it.

Although, I was hammered when I thought of the name and only found out about the candy when I decided to google it. Turns out I'm not as original as I thought.

I have no idea what you'll think of this. In fact, I have no idea what your taste in music is at all. 'Bout to find out, I guess.

Sun Araw - Beach Head

This one's not bad - drifts a little more aimlessly than some modern psych/drone, but it at least adds a very compelling exotic, tropical element into the mix. I don't see many bands attempting that amalgamation, but here it works surprisingly well.

Damo Suzuki: So, um, yeah. Getting older isn't as bad as it sounds. Better than being young & poor (DjDrake) or young & slutty (SG) or young, poor and slutty (Paves); am I right?

Alright, my friends. It's time for another solid little rock jam

Impressive guys in their '60s can still get it this far up.

Of course, they don't know how to do anything else.

Nope.

It's so perfect that I've never bothered to listen to any of their other material, for fear of diluting the brand. Should I?

Sparkleface --> Michael K. --> Michael (Yes We) K.(an) --> dr. blvd. --> dickorice --> WHO KNOWS?!?!

Anyway, would've included you on the list of "people who will enjoy this," but I thought it might be a bit modern hardcore sounding for you. For some reason I'll associate your taste with more of an old school bent. Probably off the mark, but that's how I do. Same with Sid.

Also: that Buzzcocks comp (although, really, it feels much more like an album to me) is phenomenal. Just grabbed the vinyl the other day.

CererbralC: I too haven't checked out their other full lengths for fear of ruining it. (Although they do have an EP that I've listened to that has what is probably their best song I've heard.) You should check out Magazine, especially Real Life. Howard Devoto's band after he moved on from the Buzzcocks.

Yeah, especially Tension. "I Believe" off of it is like the missing song from Singles Going Steady and may be considered their best song.

Yeah, that's a great track. I would agree A Different Kind of Tension is my favorite studio album, but Another Music in a Different Kitchen (their first) is worth hearing too.
