So the building where I now work has several large tenants (Allstate, Toshiba, who know who else). There are a lot of other little businesses as well, and we all have to share the same elevator, stairs, etc. For some reason, all of the common areas (bathrooms, elevator lobby, main lobby, etc.) are all flooded with some form of adult-contemporary sludge. In the past two weeks I've heard stuff like Something (sorry, I hate this song) Sentimental Fool (I can't help it, I have to sing like Michael McDonald whenever I hear this) Life in a Northern Town (which I actually like) New Kid In Town (icky Eagles) Some Lisa Stansfield tune where she's been the world over and misses her baby (Rochdale girls know how to sing it) Yadda, yadda... what I wanna know is why bother? Is this a service management feel the tenants deserve? And why this stuff? I used to work for a joint that had 24x7 lite oldies playing over the PA. Worse, it was an automated station, so you were guaranteed to hear "Cats In The Cradle" at the same damn time every day. "Oh, it's the Carpenters, it must be 2.00." Anyone else ever been subjected to this kind of stuff? What countermeasures (if any) did you take?

at the store I work at they play that stuff 24/7. It's terrible on your consciousness, one of the reasons I want to get out of there. some of the tunes I dig (turn the page by seeger, stuck on you by Lionel, etc) and I sing along like a moron when they come on. they play a lot of bad stuff, but some of it is so bad it's funny, thankfully. Like Foreigner's Jukebox Hero  What I don't understand is it's mostly weepy RnB tunes about lost love. I don't understand how this is supposed to drive up sales. IT's not feelgood shit at all, and especially if you work there and are going through a breakup or something

Trust me...in store music used to be much worse. In fact, I am often dumbfounded when I'll be in Burger King or some retail store and they are playing better music than is heard on commercial radio. Thank God for the satellites.

I used to keep a list of all the songs that were played at Kohl's when I worked there in '97 & '98. Some of it was actually good. A few songs were terrible, and it's actually those I'd love to find again, but I really don't have much to go off of anymore to track them down. The lyrics have slipped my mind too. Probably for the best.

Songs I liked that were played there at the time:

Foo Fighters - Big Me
Jars Of Clay - Five Candles (You Were There)
The Sundays - Summertime
Beth Orton - Galaxy of Emptiness
The Beatles - Taxman
Janet Jackson - Together Again
Rolling Stones - Anybody Seen My Baby

I wanted to make a top 10 but my memory failing me.

funny, I made a walgreens rock compilation the other day. It's alphabetical, and chock full of great songs ;)

1. I'm not in love by 10CC
2. Time Passages by Al Stewart
3. Ventura Highway by America
4. Turn the Page Seeger
5. Captain of her Heart
6. I'd like to make it with you Bread
7. Ride like the Wind Criss cross
8. Say You Love Me Fleetwood Mac
9. I want to know what love is Foreigner
10. If you could read my mind Lightfoot
11. Faithfully Journey (fuck yeah)
12. Stuck on You Lionel
13. Night Shift Commodores
14. zzTop Gimme all your lovin

So hopefully years down the road when I've moved on I can put this comp on and reminisce about all the good and bad times.

The Osco (now CVS) on State/Jackson has a crazy mix, from the hottest hiphop, to White Stripes and System of a Down! B) The old office job I had a number of years ago was the last place I heard full-on "real" Muzak. Sometimes the songs selected were quite unusual...I do recall "A Little Respect" by Erasure, Muzak-style, amongst some of the tunes (no lie!). The Christmas selections were quite nice, no vocals. Muzak in an office is better than no music at all (if the office won't let you have any of your own radios).

"Captain of Her Heart" and most Lionel stuff are pretty rough, but the rest of that mix looks like some seriously smooth sailing. edit: Why is this in the Etc. forum.

For years I worked in a massive place without interior walls--picture Costco converted to an office, with flimsy screens denoting aisles and "cubicles." They had cheezy instrumental Muzak piped throughout the building to cancel the noise of 500 ringing telephones and 500 simultaneous conversations.

By the time I got some 'clout,' (my dept. was responsible for paying for the Muzak subscription) I was really sick of their "lite rock" programming (really, it was crappy synthesized pop--we weren't allowed to play real music or anything w/ vocals). I found out what the alternatives were and caused an uproar by recommending we drop "music" altogether & change to the plain white noise option. So we switched to actual classical music, a nice change of pace. Then we got a new CEO who immediately switched us to white noise, and that was the best of all.

The worst thing about Muzak is if you're on hold with a company that plays its own music, you get conflicting noise pollution in both ears and it's hard to concentrate.

With ya on that...I can listen to the worst music in the world with pleasure, but don't ever get me in earshot of two bits of music playing at the same time. Gives me the howling fantods.
