Well what have you heard? Calculating Infinity is pretty much essential as well as Miss Machine, if only to appreciate the slight change in direction that they took. Irony is a dead scene is fucking amazing. It's an EP that they did with Mike Patton on vocals, is probably my favourite DEP release. Also, I don't have a copy of this anymore so if anyone could upload it, I'd be well impressed.

OH MAN, is this Witchcraft ever great. They've stepped up their game in a huge way...this is Dungen-level stuff here, not just simple retro metal anymore.

Listened to The Alchemist on the train this morning. So fucking good. A huge step up from Firewood, and I loved that album (and in 2005, I felt like I was one of the few here who felt that way besides Sask and Falconi, although maybe WillTell was the only one who expressed genuine distaste for it.) The organ solos in "If Crimson Was Your Colour"... goddamn.

Damo Suzuki: So, um, yeah. Getting older isn't as bad as it sounds. Better than being young & poor (DjDrake) or young & slutty (SG) or young, poor and slutty (Paves); am I right?

Alright, my friends. It's time for another solid little rock jam

TOO MANY GREAT ALBUMS THIS YEAR! Seriously, this is getting stupid. Witchcraft has always been a very good band, but I'm about ready to say that The Alchemist is the year's biggest surprise. Like I said, this is Ta det Lugnt/Tio Bitar excellence here. It's always so thrilling to see a band take the bull by the horns and say with supreme confidence, "You thought we were good then? Try this."

This album needs a thread of its own.

Edit: Listened to all three albums in succession, and the new one blows Firewood out of the water.

So this deserves a mention:

(Damnit...can't get images to work...this is DETHKLOK'S DETHALBUM, ok?)

HUGE leak, in my book.

Get it here. (Get a lot of other stuff we've talked about here, too. Among the many other contributions Sask has made to my metal life, turning me on to this site is one of the biggest.)

Anyway, this needs no introduction. We've watched "Metalocalpyse," right? Well, most of the songs here were there, only they're longer, actual songs now, not minute-long clips (though they're still short...longest thing here is 4 minutes). Some killer new songs, too. Comes out in two weeks...dual disc version includes a video and the second season premiere of the show.

And, yes, this is a comedy/novelty album ... but only in the lyrics (when you can even make them out).

Musically, as anyone who watches the show knows, this is no laughing matter. Utterly convincing/heavy death metal with power/orchestral other flourishes as befits its roots as a metal satire series. (Cause death metal isn't the only genre out there, ya know.)

In other words, its good. Definitely NOT a metal "Weird Al."

Or as (animated) frontman Nathan Explosion would say, this album is "totally brutal and completely metal."

Get a good laugh and bang your head.

MASTODON's management has released the following statement to BLABBERMOUTH.NET:

"MASTODON guitarist/vocalist Brent Hinds suffered a severe head injury after his performance on Sunday night's [September 9] MTV Video Music Awards in Las Vegas. He is being treated by a Las Vegas hospital where he remains hospitalized."

It is rumored that Hinds' injury was sustained during a brutal assault that took place shortly after MASTODON performed "Colony of Birchmen" at the Palms Casino Fantasy Suites in Las Vegas. However, it should be noted that this information has not yet been corroborated by an official source.

Here's to a speedy recovery! Aside from the obvious human tragedy if this takes a turn for the worst, Brent would be a massive loss for music if he doesn't make it or loses any of his musical prowess as a result.

Yeah, bad news especially if he's been attacked. There is a weird history of rock/metal blokes getting attacked, what with Chris Spencer, Dimebag et al.

No voiceovers, but some weird choppy edits on a few songs (especially in the second half), which makes me think somebody put it through an editing software and dropped the ball a few times to remove them. Sound quality is otherwise decent, and its enough to get the point. I'll definitely buy it when it comes out, if only for the extras (and the second disc includes the immortal "Duncan Hills Coffee Jingle.")

And, yeah, that Mastodon story...hope he recovers. What the hell is wrong with people?

What the fuck re: Brent Hinds. Major bummer. Thoughts and prayers to him and his family, hopes for a speedy recovery, etc. I think I was more traumatized hearing that Dimebag had been shot than I was hearing about 9/11.

Mastodon's Brent Hinds Expected to Make 'Full Recovery'

As BLABBERMOUTH.NET first reported early this morning, MASTODON guitarist/vocalist Brent Hinds suffered what the band's manager described as a "severe" head injury in an incident that took place sometime after the MTV Video Music Awards early Monday morning (September 10). He remains under physicians' care in a Las Vegas hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.

MTV News reports that Hinds' nose was also broken, and he sustained two black eyes, according to the band's manager, Nick John. Although John did not provide details about what led to Hinds' injuries, he said they occurred at around 3 a.m. Monday morning, after the band had finished one of the highest-profile performances of its career a guest spot in the FOO FIGHTERS' suite during Sunday's MTV Video Music Awards at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas. MASTODON performed its single "Colony of Birchmen" with QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE frontman Josh Homme; the song appears on the band's 2006 LP, "Blood Mountain".

"Thankfully, it seems he's going to [make a full recovery]," said John. "All I know is he had a bad head injury, broken nose and blacked-out eyes. He doesn't recall much."

Several unsubstantiated rumors circulating around the web claim that Hinds was attacked shortly after the band's MTV Video Music Awards performance.
