I've been too busy to post at length. I did see GWAR last week, who were as boring as ever, but at least Toxic Holocaust was great fun. And Kingdom of Sorrow was goofy but mildly enjoyable.

Then a couple days later I caught Impaled and Fuck the Facts, both of whom were very good. Actually FTF were at times amazing.

Been getting the first 2009 releases, the new Napalm Death among them (eggcellent as always), but the one that's really surprised me is the debut by a band from Wisconsin called Luna Mortis...excellent prog/power, with a girl singer who sings like she's in a metal band, not doing the operatic thing, nor that flitty Loreena McKennit shtick. It's out in February, so keep your eyes peeled for it, it;s a good 'un.

The new Dir En Grey appeared in the mail today, and I think it could be the best thing I've ever heard by them. They're really following the lead of Tool and the Deftones, going all brooding and proggy.

Hm, just this a.m. in the shower I was guessing that I'd missed their local appearance (...nope, it's the 30th). In relation to them, your use of Tool and Deftones in the same sentence intrigues me, Sask. TS, I follow no man's timetable :P

The band (i.e., KoS) seemed OK, but my friend and I couldn't get past the insufferable, metal-cheerleader/vocalist. But, yeah, I probably won't ever go see GWAR again--once you're far enough away from the stage not to get covered in goo, their whole shtick gets pretty tedious. As goofy as it is, An Overdose of Death will probably end up somewhere on my EOY list--I'm a sucker for the kind of thrash revivalism that sticks close to the whole "crossover" vibe.

Yeah, check out the new album, velocity, I think you'll like. Very moody. It must have leaked by now.

That's Jamey Jasta, the dude from Hatebreed. I actually got a kick out of how he works the crowd. Obviously no ego thing going on for a guy from such a popular band, he knows his role as a supporting band, and he did it really well.

As goofy as it is, An Overdose of Death will probably end up somewhere on my EOY list--I'm a sucker for the kind of thrash revivalism that sticks close to the whole "crossover" vibe.

Yeah, they nail it live, that's for sure. The bassist and drummer are from a defunct Toronto thrash band called Rammer, who I used to really like before the whole revival trend kicked in.

Dir en grey is a Japanese band formed in 1997 and currently signed to Firewall Div., a sub-division of Free-Will. As of 2008, they have recorded seven full-length records and while the group's lineup has remained consistent since its inception, numerous stylistic changes have made its music's genre difficult to determine (though it is generally considered to be a form of rock music). Originally part of Japan's visual kei movement, the band has opted for less flamboyant attire in recent years.
Dir en grey has toured through Asia, Europe and North America;Billboard commenting on the group's international fanbase, that the band "has transcended the language barrier in the United States through its music" and "gained its audience without singing in English".
Dir en grey's format has been subject to change throughout their career, initially being a rather experimental form of hard rock. Some tracks of their debut album Gauze also demonstrated a distinct pop appeal, which was largely dropped in favor of a more progressive sound on the following albums, Macabre and Kisou. While up to that point some songs had already been more fast-paced, raw and aggressive than others, the band's music took a decisive turn with the release of the EP Six Ugly, from then on sporting more metal influences in general. Dir en grey's style has since been gravitating towards riffs and song structures more along the lines of contemporary North American fusion genres, such as nu metal and metalcore.
All lyrics are written by vocalist Kyo and deal with subjects such as society, mass media as well as sexual obsessions and love, usually with negative implications. The vocabulary varies from subtle to explicit and several songs rely heavily on double entendres and other wordplay, often involving the multiple meanings of a kanji character

interesting. It is getting a lot of favorable reviews from the fan base, but im not quite convinced yet. I will say that there are some great songs on the album. Vinushka, dozing green, red soil, and inconvenient ideal are all amazing. Glass Skin is very good, but i think overrated. Sa Bir, as a intro song is great at setting the mood. a few other songs are decent, but then i think there is a lot of fluff. forgettable songs that i will admit, yes, represent a harder, darker sound for the band, but don't really have the sound of a dir en grey song. dir en grey has always been distinguished by kyo's unique vocals. the songs on the album where he is growling or guttural 100% of the time don't sound like dir en grey. the songs that have a mix of his singing and growling/screaming are the ones that have their signature. One interesting thing they did on this album is include English versions of Dozing Green and Glass Skin on the USA release. the English version of dozing green is just as good as the Japanese one, but the the English version of glass skin bugs me. there is a line in the chorus that i find really annoying. just the sound of it sounds weird to me.
I know i probably sound like im afraid of my favourite band changing too much, but im really not. When they started to really change their sound and image in 2003, i was totally behind it. in fact, Vulgar is my favourite album of theirs. I just think this album is too long. Not because of the two songs that clock in at 7 min+, in fact, i really like those songs. I think they just included some subpar songs. who knows though. It took me probably 40 listens to warm up to their 2005 release withering to death. on the other hand, i fell in love with last year's marrow of a bone almost immediately.

Overall, I'd say that Dozing Green is one of the best songs Dir en Grey has ever written. I really like red soil as well. however, Vinushka is the encapsulation of everything the album is supposed to be about i think. It's a great progressive song, which is rare territory for the band. If you only listen to one track off this album, listen to Vinushka.

I agree, those three songs are outstanding. "Vinushka" is incredible. The album does start to meander, any 70+ minute album will (thankfully "Dozing Green" appears to break any monotony). But really, I like how the eccentricity has been toned down a touch, the band's sound streamlined. Usually, I'm all snippy when a foreign band "Americanizes" their sound like that, but I think Dir En Grey have taken to it quite well, without seeming like they're pandering to a certain crowd.
