1.) Surprised to see Glassjaw mentioned in a "metal" thread, although I guess it makes sense. 2.) I hope the misspelling of "DIY" was due to a slip of the fingers.

Damo Suzuki: So, um, yeah. Getting older isn't as bad as it sounds. Better than being young & poor (DjDrake) or young & slutty (SG) or young, poor and slutty (Paves); am I right?

Alright, my friends. It's time for another solid little rock jam

Reminds me of Spark is a Diamond and Iwrestledabearonce. Not too shabby.

Clever little Ellroy reference in the band name.

Would've been more clever if it hadn't been a movie starring Russell Crowe and Guy Pierce. And that there's another band - from Chicago, no less - already called Rollo Tomassi.

Lamb of God and the Sword did a show here in between Alberta dates with Metallica...we respect bands that come out here in December (not many do), especially like this weekend when we're in the process of getting our first serious snow of the winter. The Sword was very good, nice and tight with vocals as low in the mix as on their albums, such is their shtick, I guess. But Lamb of God destroyed. My third time seeing them, and they've never sounded better. Totally fresh, out of the studio and joining the Met tour this past week, and thoroughly enjoying a headlining gig, everyone in good spirits, the sound mix phenomenal. Played about 14 or 15 songs over 80 minutes (including "11th Hour", wooo), and did a pair of new tracks, "Dead Seeds" and "Fake Messiah", both of which sounded very good, less groove than Sacrament, kind of returning to the aggression of Ashes of the Wake. Awesome show overall.

No need to justify. The first Glassjaw album still rules. 'Siberian Kiss' is easily as 'metal' as anything else this thread pukes up.

Also: people should check out Potop. Really. Sludge/evilness from Macedonia, and I love it. The riffs are solid, the vocals are horrible, and three of the songs on the album don't even have titles.

Ha ha. I was kinda on the same page with his ability to track down albums..... I'd be curious to see whose ignore list I'm on, actually. Fuckers :)

On that note, any chance we can track down;

*cough*
Silentist - S/T Tough to find, but worth it. Our local Piano/Thrash heroes. Worth a listen, as you've never heard anything like it. http://www.myspace.com/silentist
Glassjaw - Everything You Ever Wanted to Know about Silence (my favorite Emo/Metal album of all time. Sorta Deftones-y, but not exactly. Paved the way for the likes of Protest the Hero or From a Second Story Window)
Oxbow - An Evil Heat (Their "metal album")
Time of Orchids - Sarcast While (One of the Tzadik metal-ish offerings. Prog nerds will love this. Basically Kayo Dot - Dowsing Anemone With Copper Tongue)
Postman Syndrome - Terraforming (I actually own this album, but I'm lazy and I don't want to bring it in and rip it in order to upload... Hadn't listened to it in years this time around I was blown away by how good it actually is. Probably on of the first true Indie Metal crossover acts. Overall vibe reminds me a bit of Maudlin of the Well meets The Apex Theory <Soundscape>)
*cough*

Speaking of spamming links...... Here are a couple.

Moonchild - I wouldn't say I love this album, but it came out of my art metal phase where I downloaded everything Metal on Tzadik. Features (who else) Mike Patton
http://www.sendspace.com/file/9d5x8o

Time of Orchids - Namesake Caution This is effectively Kayo Dot - Blue Lambency Downward
http://www.sendspace.com/file/nw7rq0

glassjaw:

new single?: http://rapidshare.co...king_Lennon.m4a

http://rapidshare.co...out_Silence.zip

btw, they used to be a great LI emo/hardcore band back in the day, actually called themselves da glassjaw...
they were part of a strong LIHC scene that included one of my all time favorite bands SILENT MAJORITY...
Taking Back Sunday and several other emo/punk/screamo bands evolved from the same pack in the mid90s.
Glassjaw then started idolizing the DEFTONES, who I saw Glassjaw open for at the ROSELAND in the late 90's..

living in LI was great back then...the (more) amazing V.O.D. were in Merrick, just 2 towns away...tons of great DIY shows.

Thanks for this!

I'm still surprised to see all the Glassjaw trash talking on this thread. All in all, the album is pretty metal (although it is sort of "hardcore" leaning, but I don't think we need another genre discussion...).

Different reviewers? The fact that allmusic is in reality complete garbage, with awfully written, terribly inconsistent and dumbfounding reviews, and cannot even redeem themselves with their so-called database since said database often contains several missing or corrupted entries, and quite a few incorrect entries? AMG is unreliable, and wholly sucks. The end.

Reckoning Night may have their finest song in "Don't Say a Word", but it's far from Sonata Arctica's best album. Winterhearts Guild, maybe. Their live one is probably my own favourite of theirs, come to think of it. That or their Europe-only best-of. I did quite enjoy Unia...

Poison the Well are one of those bands which I will always have a soft spot for. They were the band that got me into metal, basically. I put this on to day and fuck is it good.

The story with these guys is quite simple. First album, Opposite of December, was one of the standout metalcore albums back in the day when that genre was getting all popular and stuff. 2nd album, Tear From the Red was a bit of a departure in that they had more singing in it which naturally annoyed the old school fan base. They did make Botchla, though, which is imo one of the most perfect melodic/emo/whatever hardcore songs ever made.

Then they got signed to a major (Atlantic) and ended up making You Come before You. However, instead of making an album which would expand their fan base, they did the opposite. Their most inaccessible to date. It's not even metalcore any more, really. Just really great heavy and melodic metal/rock with amazing vocals.

A lot of people probably think this band are shit or whatever, but I can't get enough of this album. Here's my fave song.

in my opinion,
Opposite of December (1999) is the single most-influental record of the late 90's in regards to non-european-inspired metalcore...I actually consider it to be a hardcore record, but it spawned so many metalcore bands of that era...(atreyu, every TRUSTKILL band, etc)

Then, it wasnt until the early 00's that bands like UNEARTH, ATR, SHADOWS FALL, etc began incorporating the European metal influences, into metal-core, coinciding with the rise in popularity of bands like IN FLAMES, DARK TRANQ, etc....

The same way Opposite of December inspired a genre, I think UNEARTH's The Stings of Conscience was the first record in the hardcore scene to adopt the "gottenburg" sound into their mix...at least the first i heard.

I was lucky enough to catch both of these pioneering bands on the same bill at the El n' Gee Club in 2001...It was inspiring...

yeah, i guess they had the metal influence, but i didnt hear the prominent dual-harmony "gottenburg" guitar sound...

it all gets blurry...even hatebreed has a metal sound, though they are classically regarded as a hardcore band...
now that I think of it, V.O.D. pre-dates them all...forget everything i said...

replace it with:
"yeah, that Opposite of December record was killer!"
