Damo Suzuki: So, um, yeah. Getting older isn't as bad as it sounds. Better than being young & poor (DjDrake) or young & slutty (SG) or young, poor and slutty (Paves); am I right?
Alright, my friends. It's time for another solid little rock jam

about halfway through the set the beers I had started to catch up to me so I said "Ok at the next song of theirs that isn't a classic and I don't love I'll go to the bathroom," and then it was like "Duel" --> "Rave Down" --> "Last Train to Satansville" --> "Son of Mustang Ford" --> "Duress" and I was like fuuuuuuck
encored with their two best songs, "Never Lose That Feeling" and "Kill the Superheroes". Only disappointments were no "Harry and Maggie" and no "Never Learn" to go with the "Never Lose That Feeling." Great length, great setlist, great playing, great sound. Nothing new and nothing shitty at all.
you give me hope for the future of humanity.

place was impressively packed last night for such an un-New York band on a Wednesday night. Wonder if Dr. Jimmy was in attendance.
he thinks they're "meh," so probably not.

I'd like to think that Sickpup's face hurts from smiling so much at the barrage of riff-happy awesomeness that Swervedriver delivered last night. Either that or his proximity to the speakers peeled layers of skin off of his visage. Jesus H, I had earplugs in all night, and my ears still aren't right. Easily one of the loudest shows I've ever been to.my face hurts.
nobody gets it.
But it was worth it. Having never seen them back in their heyday, I don't know how this show would have compared to the 91-98 performances. Maybe a younger Swervedriver might have been more unhinged. But this show was tight and focused in the best way possible. Any possibilities about sloppy or phoned-in performances from a band who hadn't played together in ten years were completely blown away within the first couple of songs. Watching and listening to Adam and Jimmy's guitar playing was a complete rush. But Swervedriver have never just been about guitar shredding. There are a lot of great tunes in their catalog, and as good as they are on record, hearing it live brings a whole new dimension. I was a bit disappointed that they shortchanged Ejector Seat Reservation and to a lesser extent, 99th Dream. Even though "The Other Jesus" "Bring Me the Head of the Fortune Teller" and "I Am Superman" had been played in previous shows, they only did "The Birds" last night. Boo. I lost track of the set list, but all of the Raise/Mezcal Head "hits" got played. "Duel" was especially great. Didn't expect to hear "Feel So Real," but we did. And the encore of "Never Lose The Feeling" and "Kill the Superheroes" was just about perfect. I was hoping that since this was the last night of the North American tour that they'd play a little longer. Still, 90 minutes.
Metro felt pretty close to sold out. Older, mostly male crowd (surprise), but everyone was definitely into it. The band said very little, but seemed really pleased about the crowd. Jez came out from behind the drumkit at the end of the encore to say something about Metro and Chicago always being one of their favorite places to play. I believe it. A great night out.
