"time for heroes" is really great-- the band's best moment. (that's probably the first time I've disagreed with ben in this thread!)

Bruce Springsteen - "American Skin (41 Shots)" [/size]

Year[/b]: 2003

url]

I'm about 95% positive that this wasn't a single by just about any definition. But I guess you guys just can't help yourselves when it comes to voting for Bruce Springsteen.

thank goodness you left that 5% wiggle room...

http://www.lostinthe...gle/cd5-y2k.htm

I'm pretty sure it came out in 2001, as well.
Sail Away: The Songs of Randy Newman -7.5/10
Dusty Springfield - Dusty in Memphis 8.5/10
Buddy & Julie Miller - Written in Chalk wow, first listen, but great great record! 9.3/10
Justin Townes Earle - Midnight at the Moviessurprisingly great, never picked up his past releases, but this one's knocking my socks off right away, 8.7/10
M. Ward - Hold Time 8.0/10
Neko Case -Middle Cyclone her best I've heard is my initial impression, but too soon to rate, haven't had a really good listen yet 7.8/10

Sendspace is very, very angry today. It won't let me download anything. Someone feed it some crackers or something and make it happy again.

I don't think I've ever heard the studio version of 41 shots, ever.

I had an mp3 of it until my hard drive crashed a few weeks back. I'm still working on trying to fix it and if I do I'll post it.

And those Rancid images were from the quasi-infamous Jaguaro article "100 CDs You Need To Remove From Your Collection Immediately", which was hilarious for its obnoxiousness, even by web standards. My copy of the Rancid cd is still unscathed, if a little dusty.

Awful article. Maybe it's actually old and its self-assured snark and canon-bashing were ahead of its time, but I get enough of this sort of thing just reading the SOMB.

Yeah, it was pretty insufferable, but it was a lot of fun to talk about at the time.

This is way off the mark. Firstly Pete managed to spend three months in Sherness Prision in 2003 for robbinghis bandmates and the story barely caused a stir in the tabloids. Outside of the NME and, the at-the-time without a record contract, Morrissey the band didn't get that much praise at all. All of the drugg scandals and tabloid nonsense didn't begin until the band had imploded and their second album had come out.

Secondly the band maybe technically inferior to the like of Max´mo Park and Futureheads but it's the fact they marked themselves out as different through their attire, subject matter and general behaviour (guerilla gigs etc.) that made them popular to a generation of kids who'd not had a band of that type since Oasis burst on the the scene some 8 years earlier. Obviously the big name producer helped but an NME SOTW isn't enough to break a record into the top 40, least of all a debut that recieved zero radio play due to it's extreme profanity.

As good as the likes of Franz, Bloc Party et al are wouldn't you look at someone a bit funny if they said they were their favourite band and they'd seen them dozens of times and they'd touch the lead singers hand. The Libertines had a manifesto of sorts and to dismiss them them as a youth clasping for somrthing in a seas of medoricty Well it's these ignorant faces that bring this town down.

I didn't realize the Libertines, like Oasis before them, were a grassroots movement and a manifesto for a new social contract! ;) Song is still weak sauce.

Also crap: Arctic Monkeys.
No, I'm Alpha Male.

I suspect this one would have been much higher had it not suffered from the "late first post effect," where it didn't get its first vote until late in the game...too late to jog voters memories.

I always found it one of the more tepid BFF songs. (But if it gets covered by some goober with a Casio, Undo will vote for it)

Mouthbreather accidentally discovering mashups in October 2006 is maybe the unexpected highlight of this thread. While he may not have liked what he found, I'm glad this thread. exists for evangelism purposes alone.

I was actually aware of mashups and have heard quite a few. In my defense, that could've easily been a very Gary Numan heavy sample if you weren't familiar w/ both songs.

Amusing how you always take issue with any comment that suggests any kind of flaw in the system.
