Incredibly dated and it's only been a few years.
Every Sunday morning I wake up
I see you by your dresser doing your make-up
Fluttering a Chinese fan in a Knoxville fashion
All last night you tossed and turned
Your body was hotter than the night Richmond burned
You say you had a bad nightmare about tractor trailers crashing

the song basically sounded dated even the day it came out.

doesn't stop it from being a phenomenal achievement.

Bittorrent works better than TV, and no commercials either.

I only watch one show, so I don't need Tivo. Sounds like the device for TV enthusiasts though.

Oasis - "Wonderwall" / "The Swamp Song" / "The Masterplan"

(1363 Points, 21 Votes, One #1 Vote)

Year
: 1995

US Chart Position: #8 / #1 Modern Rock

UK Chart Position: #2

Acclaimed Music Ranking: #3 (year), #10 (decade), #108 (all-time)

Rank on Our All-Time Singles List: #30

AMG Says: "Written by Noel Gallagher for his girlfriend (now ex-wife) Meg Matthews, "Wonderwall" did the one thing that British rock bands had been unable to do in years: break America. This simple love song rocketed Oasis to the levels of rock royalty, and Noel Gallagher earned worldwide respect for his writing ability. From the simple acoustic intro, through the strategically placed drum entrance (a split second after the word "backbeat"), to the final refrain, "Wonderwall" is both one of the best Oasis songs and one of the best love songs ever written. Liam Gallagher, however, thought the song corny at first. At least that's what he told his brother. But when it came time to decide who would sing it, Liam jumped at it. A wise move, too, because with the success of the song worldwide, Liam became to many the frontman of the decade. Even America caught on to the simple tune. It became a radio staple, and the video grabbed high rotation on MTV. Oasis has had a lot of shining moments, but "Wonderwall" was their brightest."

Ranked Highest By: Northern Voice (#1) (also ranked #2 by Musicgurl, #4 by Hero and #5 by jdubs3)

"After much thought into this, I have finally come to a conclusion as to why the ‘Meet the Spartans’ commercial is so funny:

It is an interesting choice to have Sanjaya sing ‘I’m not gay,’ as his final words on earth. As he is plummeting into a seemingly bottomless pit, he does not say ‘dear god no,’ ‘I love you mom,’ or even simply ‘argh.’ He instead takes the moment to reaffirm to the world, in spite of their doubts, that he is not a homosexual. Not only that, but he continues to sing, despite falling to his certain death. The distinct lack of plausibility of this situation is what produces giggles from our mouth. It is the antithesis to the belief that ‘it’s funny because it is true.’

Surprised the Gallagher Brothers didn't show up more. I'd have probably put in "Whatever" and "Don't Go Away"... both stellar songs.

The White Stripes - "Fell in Love With a Girl"

(1383 Points, 22 Votes, One #1 Vote)

Year
: 2002

US Chart Position: #12 Modern Rock

UK Chart Position: #21

Acclaimed Music Ranking: #4 (year), #17 (decade), #289 (all-time)

Rank on Our All-Time Singles List: #26

AMG Says: "The brash first single from the White Stripes' third album, White Blood Cells, is an attention-grabbing chunk of primal punk rock confection that flames out in a breathless one minute and 50 seconds. The dynamic duo of guitarist/singer Jack White and Meg White on drums waste no time in revving up their rock machine, whipping up a brutal slashing guitar groove set to a hyper, stuttering rock beat, all thrashing crash cymbal and skipping snare drum. Right out of the gate, Jack White unleashes a manic vocal with truly visceral intensity: "Fell in love with a girl/Fell in love once and almost completely/She's in love with the world/But sometimes these feelings can be so misleading/She turns and says are you alright?/I said I must be fine, 'cause my heart's still beating/She says, come and kiss me by the riverside/Bobby says it's fine, he don't consider it cheating now." The music slams to a stop for the last line of each verse allowing Jack White's quirky high-range delivery to shine through with a wild, almost cartoonish inflection that gives the track it's distinct flavor. The good times just keep rolling as Jack White hurls a dose of bubblegum-snapping humor into the breathless onslaught of words with jittery banter, "Red hair with a curl/Mellow roll for the flavor and eyes for peeping/Can't keep away from the girl/These two sides of my brain need to have a meeting/Can't think of anything to do/My left brain knows that all love is fleeting/She's looking for something new/And I said it once before but it bears repeating." In place of a chorus, the arrangement sinks the hooks in even further with and insanely catchy backing vocal that reminds one of a wordless Ramones-style singalong, the incessant harmonized "ah-ah-ah-ah" mercilessly working its way into the subconscious of the helpless listener. Surrendering is the only option; to fight against the infectious brutal and relentless energy of "Fell in Love With a Girl" is an exercise in futility. It will all be over in a couple minutes and you can go on with your life, but beware, those backing vocals will linger on the brain for several hours."

the fuzzy, scratchy production and bleached out vocals intentionally makes the song sound older than it is.

The Yeah Yeah Yeahs - "Maps"

(1385 Points, 28 Votes)

Year
: 2003

US Chart Position: #87 / #9 Modern Rock

UK Chart Position: #26

Acclaimed Music Ranking: #8 (year), #27 (decade), #426 (all-time)

Rank on Our All-Time Singles List: #324

AMG Says: "The Yeah Yeah Yeah’s show a softer side with ”Maps”, veering from the volatile punk contortions that are most associated with the group to delve into the emotionally sensitive. Never bowing to conventionality in song structure or sonic texture, the band refuse to revert to anything as traditional as strummed guitar chords, instead weaving a delicate web of pointillist guitars and tribal drumming together with Karen O. subdued vocal performance into a subtle, stunning gem. Drummer Brian Chase pounds a bed of toms to a needling guitar loop, setting up a fertile atmospheric space for Karen O.’s surprisingly tender vocal as she coos, “Pack up / I’m straight / Enough / Oh, say, say, say, oh, say, say, say, oh, say, say, say…” Warm Eno-like fuzz tones rise and fall as the music gently builds into to a brief chorus where Karen O. is allowed to show a vulnerability (perhaps for the first time in the bands short history) in the heartbreaking refrain, “Wait, they don’t love you like I love you”, repeated as a desperate mantra that reveals true emotional candor. The power of her words tighten their grip as the song progresses, while showing she is capable of more conventional vocal chops, comfortably hitting all the notes when reaching for higher registers in latter choruses. The band’s volcanic energy is not able to be capped completely however, finessing some minor rock eruptions in the break, where guitarist Nick Zinner and drummer Chase blow off some steam with some nice guitar and drum interplay, before bringing it back down for a final go at the chorus."
