:) I'm required to watch Rambo (the newest one) tonight. Anyone seen it? Is it terrible? I haven't watched any aside from the 1st.

Yeah, I enjoyed the first one for what it was. I've intentionally avoided the others up to this point, as the 1st film was relatively thoughtful for an action film, and from what I can tell, the latter films entirely abandon that in favor of stupidity. It seems to me that, if greedy studio bosses hadn't gotten involved, the series should've ended where it did in the 1st film.

I enjoyed the new Rambo film and I too have only seen the first one (and that was a long time ago). The new one isn't deep or thoughtful or anything but it is entertaining. The opening is interesting because Sly shows a quick documentary clip sequence that shows some of the horrors of Burma. It's kind of unexpected and perhaps out of place for the type of film that follows. That said, the film very ably makes you hate the bad guy and the ending action sequence is pretty fun if you enjoy loud and dumb. Just don't expect anything special.
Few beings have ever been so impregnated, pierced to the core, by the conviction of the absolute futility of human aspiration. The universe is nothing but a furtive arrangement of elementary particles. A figure in transition toward chaos. That is what will finally prevail. The human race will disappear. Other races in turn will appear and disappear. And human actions are as free and as stripped of meaning as the unfettered movements of the elementary particles. Good, evil, morality, sentiments? Pure ‘Victorian fictions.’ All that exists is egotism. Cold, intact, and radiant.

I'm taking my best friend and my son to see THE FALL. Still pretty easily my favorite movie of the year, the only thing I've seen with emotional weight (read: I cried). We're seeing the last theatrical screening in Chicago apparently...it closes today.

It completely avoided coming to my little hamlet, so I'll be catching this on DVD, sadly.

Just got around to watching this. I'm glad I saw it, and it was pretty good, very good from the perspective of political corruption/intrigue, but I don't think I'll be hurried to see it again now that I have. In some ways, it felt like an earlier, less dense, Syriana.

EDIT- Looking at imdb, didn't even realize this was the same guy who directed Amen., that was another pretty good film. I'd say this one was superior to it, I only found Amen. so interesting.

Have you ever seen "Z"? Costa-Gavras made that too. One of my favorite "political-thriller" type films. I've never seen any of his other movies though, so I need to check out your recommendations.

I've heard Z is his best film, but I've yet to see it. I'd recommend Missing. Amen., you might as well skip unless you're particularly interested in the time period.

I actually didn't think it was half bad for an action film, especially considering the others that are being made right now (Aliens vs. Predator 2 or whatever that was called?). As far as relatively mindless, short entertainment with a small bit of weight goes, it was alright. Dunno if I would've enjoyed it on my own, but my dad's a huge Stallone fan, and his enthusiasm probably went a long way. That said, it was hardly anything like First Blood, and I doubt I'll see it again any time soon.

I agree, Ogawa, they sure did make you dislike the bad guy.

I looked up the description for Amen and it sounds good to me. Does Ulrich Mühe have a big part in it? I thought he was amazing in The Lives of Others and have been meaning to watch some of his other movies.

I'm dying to see Costa-Garvas' new one, THE AX. I'm a big fan of the book (and the author). Been sitting on the shelf for like 3 years.

It's been a while since I saw it. More importantly, my first real introduction to Ulrich Mühe (sadly) was Lives, and I saw Amen. beforehand, so when he came on screen, I wasn't thinking 'Oh, Ulrich', he was just amongst the other foreign actors in the film. It mostly revolves around two younger men, but I don't really recall it all that well. I will say though, that though the entire film isn't a favorite, is has one of my favorite opening title sequences.

I'm gonna go to prison. I deserve to go to prison

Reservation Road: A really difficult watch. A family is on their way home from a concert, when a man driving his son home from a baseball game, swerves, strikes, and kills their young boy. We then follow the rest of the story from both the grieving family, as well as the perptrator's point-of-view. It's pretty gutsy, in that the movie basically presents the grieving father, Ethan (Joaquin Phoenix), as the antagonist, consumed by revenge and anger, while Mark Ruffalo's Dwight is your basic ne'er-do-well father, trying to make an effort with his son, after driving away from the scene of the crime. I chalk part of that up to the fact that it's pretty much impossible to dislike Ruffalo, no matter who he's playing (I'm pretty sure he could play a sympathetic Hitler, he'd walk with his shoulders all slouched, sigh, and I'd go "Aw, he wasn't THAT bad of a guy."), but the other is that the movie makes a conscious decision to make the Ethan hard to like (I mean, he IS a college professor). Of course, things get complicated, Ethan unknowingly hires Dwight's law firm to represent him and Dwight is placed in charge of the day-to-day of the case, while Ethan's daughter takes piano lessons from Dwight's ex-wife. It's a hard watch, Jennifer Connolly and Mira Sorvino are given criminally little to do, and the ending is much too quick and a little bit awkward, but it's still a decent movie.

The Shining is the best King-adaptation, even if it doesn't stay true.

It was a horrible adaptation if you liked the book.

Has anyone seen Mamma Mia! yet?

Damo saw it. I'm kinda surprised to be writing that but then who knows what anyone around here really likes anyways.

I heard it was awful and without the great music would be completely unwatchable.

Inasmuch as the music is unlistenable to begin with, I'll pass.

my second grade teacher loved abba. it was supposed to be some sort of treat where we'd get to listen to music in class when we worked on a project. we usually had the choice between them or the carpenters if I recall correctly. oh those and the star wars soundtrack.
