Hey all can't remember if we've ever had a thread for an on-going discussion about Poker I want this to be a place to recommend Poker books, magazines, places to play and poker stories and tips I moved to Reno recentlly and have been finally playing live games. At the Grand Sierra Resort ( the old Reno Hilton) you can get free copies of Bluff and Card Player each month I've been taking advantage of this and while the articles are filled with good knowledge damn are they boring to read and mostly written poorly. Every article I read I end up getting the Peanuts teachers voice in my head

I'll probably try getting another tourney together in the next month or two, depending on the interest I can drum up during the NFL playoffs on a Saturday.

I started a thread on poker books probably 6-7 months ago over here but it would be awesome to get an ongoing thread going. I have since read the first Harrington, Phil Gordon's Little Green Book, and thumbed through Hellmuth's Play Poker Like the Pros. Hellmuth's book is really bad. Gordon has some great FYI tips, but his philosophy has little application post-flop and it shows in his inability to win big tournaments. But there are a couple tips he has in there that's I've found to be invaluable.

- Assume the 4th pre-flop raise represents AA
- When faced with a difficult decision, figure out exactly what your opponent wants out of you, and disappoint him/her
- Take heed at interruptions in player's behavioral patterns (People who sit back in their chairs sit up, chatty people become all business, serious people starting to smile and loosen up, etc).

I'll be playing some limit in East Chicago this weekend. Limit hold em is great for exploiting rich guys and bored tourists. If you know your theory it's as systematic as blackjack.

Yeah, I've thought about starting a general poker thread several times but figured that was too typical. Big ups to the pony for breaking the ice.

Yancy, you never told me what the hand was you busted Jesus on? And don't play coy and pretend like you don't remember every suit of every card on the board.

I don't remember! At least not the whole hand. About halfway through a NLHE tourney he was shortstacked, directly to my right. (I have position on you, donk! Cower in fear!) Folds to him in the small blind, he pushes, I wake up with kings. Can't remember what his hand was, but the monster KK held.

If by poker you mean the currently popular variant, no limit hold 'em tournaments, this book can teach you far better than I can:

I have and it's positively awful and hilarious at the same time. I got annoyed and had to turn the channel after about 15 minutes of it.

Speaking of amateurs, is Bravo done with Celebrity Poker? I used to watch that a lot when I was first learning. Gordon was really good at breaking down hands for newbies. I was really disappointed that they switched to Hellmuth, a far better player, but an annoying personality with little analyis skills. My favorite quote of his was this after Brett Butler slow-played a hand when she flopped a monster: "Did you see that? She checked the flop and called. She checked the turn and called. She trapped him into betting. And trappers aren't the only ones with fur hats, Dave!" The puzzled look on Dave Foley's face was priceless.

I don't get Bravo, thankfully I suppose. But I also don't get GSN, which sucks, because High Stakes Poker is easily the best poker show ever.

No, but I have caught the Celebrity Bid Whist Smackdown on BET. Is there a card game they won't show on TV these days?

edit: Shit, I got that wrong. Looks like it's actually called the Bid Whist Party Throwdown! and it's shown on TVOne.

i hate to admit it, but celebrity poker is what got me hooked. I saw the first tournament with David cross in 2004, or whenever and i was hooked. Been watching it since. High Stakes Poker is awesome. I watch it every monday now. It cracks me up. And last week there was a $600,000 pot. I love seeing them throw down big bundles of money. i want to be able to do that. They are a little sensitive on bleeping out the naughty words. It was pretty funny tha last night someone said "straight" and they bleeped it. haha. And now I have a mad crush on Antonio "The Magician" Esfandiari. I can't explain it, but it's true. But Daniel Negreanu is my favorite.
