This may come off as a totally random and odd question... but I saw Deliverance on tv recently, wasn't my first time to see it, but it was right at the part where those mutants are making them get undressed and the one guy squeal like a pig. When the one guy is telling the other to get undressed, he removes his jeans, and then he says "them panties." I don't know why I dwell on that line, but here's the thing: they were just white briefs. I doubt that the guy telling him to take them off was wearing boxers, maybe he wore nothing under his pants. But my hangup is, if he was also wearing briefs, wouldn't he be degrading himself as well by calling them "panties?" What was so bad about briefs back then? I know this is all completely strange to think about, but it drives me crazy.

I'm sure the gentleman was making a reference to the 19th century term pantaloons, or pantalettes. Although technically a female undergarment, it may have been used strictly for it's vocal brevity, as traditional Appalachian folk are accustomed to. He could have easily said "Kindly remove your jockey shorts, so that I might plunge deep into your rectum," but that's a bit too wordy for the average mountain man.

I always assumed it was just another way to demean the victim, equating him with a woman by using that term. Or, like they do in prison, the mountain man was treating the guy like his "bitch" and using the feminine terms.

Don't know if it's true of not, but I once saw Burt Reynolds interviewed and they talke about that scene. Burt said they wanted Ned Beatty for the roll, but knew Ned would never take it, because of that scene. Burt had a script sent to Ned that didn't include that scene. Ned accecpted the role. The scene was then added back into the script. The rest as they say is history

This is about the best response to your initial query that you're likely to receive (spoken like a true mountain man).

I heard that Ned Beatty to this day refuses to talk about it.

I think that what's creeping you out is an incongruent usage of a sexualized word. If he had said underwear or shorts it wouldn't nearly be as creepy. "Panties" is normally associated with lingerie, bikinis, and sex. Since something deeply sinister is going to happen and a commonly used word associated with more enjoyable activities is used, it's disturbing.

Man I bet no one thought we'd ever be discussing this topic!

I get what you're saying Alkaline, but if the man telling him to take them off was also wearing briefs, doesn't this lessen the intention of demeaning him?

I guess the real question is: Am I crazy to assume that Appalachian folk ever wear underwear?

Panties: A disturbing word in every sense. Must admit, I've never seen the movie, but this thread had me wanting to finally watch The Scene. So I did. And I giggled throughout. I was expecting this deeply creepy deal, and instead, hilarity. Did I ruin it for myself by watching out of context? Or is it simply because I'll never be a guy in danger of mountain mutant sodomy?

Hey, don't get your panties in a bunch... The scene I thought you were referring to was the scene where Burt clearly needed to use a draw stroke to get out of danger, but instead was shown using a J stroke. What a joke!
"Maybe I should follow you around and smartify everything you say." "in barlight she looked allright, in daylight she looked desperate." "I'm gonna shower in that shit"

The scene brings out many men's worst fear, a rectal violation. . . .

Which is why I find it odd that so many guys end up asking the same from their girls.
