Seriously, just look at the album covers. Must be that healthy dose of whiskey and tales. His voice "...like it was soaked in a vat of bourbon, left hanging in the smokehouse for a few months and then taken outside and run over with a car." Works hats, works cigarettes, works a swagger, but most importantly works ugly.

To say that looks matter is such a disaster of the MTV and post generations. Like Dylan, he enjoys creating a mysterious persona for himself . Bottom line...it's about the music and musicianship. He writes gorgeous melodies, poetic lyrics and now dabbles in the avante garde. What's not to like.

"That's right, it filets, it chops It dices, slices, never stops lasts a lifetime, mows your lawn And it mows your lawn and it picks up the kids from school It gets rid of unwanted facial hair it gets rid of embarrassing age spots It delivers a pizza and it lengthens, and it strengthens And it finds that slipper that's been at large under the chaise lounge for several weeks And it plays a mean Rhythm Master It makes excuses for unwanted lipstick on your collar And it's only a dollar, step right up" - that's why.

his melodies rarely do much for me...and to my ears, his voice sounds fraudulent and annoying, so actually there's a lot not to like.

but he's a great actor/persona and he seems very smart.

I never noticed until now that he'd kind of pose like Paris Hilton in those early photos. I guess the top of his head is his good side.

Still waiting for Slackmo to delete this thread.

i can't think of another artist whose music draws such extreme reactions from me. he's written some gorgeous songs, and yet some of his other stuff is such wretched unlistenable garbage.

God, shut the fuck up.

Yes, and we know it's about the music man.

But he only does his "voices" thing on, maybe, half of his songs. Listen to "Cold Cold Ground" or any one of his more contemporary ballads...I can't hear how that can be considered insincere.

Oh, and why is he so cool...I got three words: Pork-Pie-Hat!

I'd back this statement. I suppose it could be argued that his style originates from other sources
but he's done quite a bit to make it his own thing and his persona is certainly an interesting one.
DeRo seems to believe his wife runs his world now and the new material lacks the punch of the earlier recordings but it's evolved far from when he was the barfly-piano crooner.
There is nothing more depressing than trying to appear happy when you are not."

Listen to him talk sometime.

"My piano has been drinking, not me"

"I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy."

"I don't have a drinking problem 'Cept when I can't get a drink."

"Colder than a jewish american princess on her honeymoon"

"Colder than a well digger's ass"

"I'm so goddamn horny the crack of dawn better watch itself around me."

"I want to thank you all for being here tonight; it'd be mighty strange here tonight if nobody showed up."

"Pour me a cab, I just can't drink no more."

"Well, I don't mind working cause I used to be jerking off most of the time, in bars"

"Oh yeah, I remember my first beer." (to a waitress dropping a tray of drinks)

"I'm not weird about it or anything (Masturbating in this instance). I don't tie myself up first or anything."

god i love him
