So this thread might die a slow and painful death, but I will try my best to keep it afloat.

So anyways, Matthew Ryan has been my favorite singer-songwriter for the last eight years or so, and I think that he has never really got his the recognition he really deserves. I have mentioned him in some other threads, but he deserves his own.

As for his new record, "From a Late Night High Rise," I have finally decided that this was the best record of the year (well tied with TV on the Radio), it just came out too late for me to really sink my teeth in before year end lists. It is one hell of a record, that on first listen seems a little all over the place but after awhile it just falls into place into some of the most brilliant songwriting I have heard in years. But this record is getting really good reviews all over the place, so I figure I am not alone in my love for this (and a few SOMBies agree).

Oh and he is playing Schubas later this month, and he puts on a great show.

"After much thought into this, I have finally come to a conclusion as to why the ‘Meet the Spartans’ commercial is so funny:

It is an interesting choice to have Sanjaya sing ‘I’m not gay,’ as his final words on earth. As he is plummeting into a seemingly bottomless pit, he does not say ‘dear god no,’ ‘I love you mom,’ or even simply ‘argh.’ He instead takes the moment to reaffirm to the world, in spite of their doubts, that he is not a homosexual. Not only that, but he continues to sing, despite falling to his certain death. The distinct lack of plausibility of this situation is what produces giggles from our mouth. It is the antithesis to the belief that ‘it’s funny because it is true.’

I'll be there with all kinds of bells on. This better not get canceled. I have been way too excited over the last two weeks for this show. I'll be on high alert all afternoon to make sure it's all a go.

I hope you at least stuck around for Easton, no? He's much more talented than Ryan anyway ...

did you really just come in this thread to slam on an unknown songwriter? what does this even accomplish?

I'm a fan of both songwriters, and they're both unknown in the big picture. I'm just a little surprised that someone would drive from Milwaukee to see a show in Chicago and turn around when the headliner canceled, since there was a better opening act anyway . . . Saying Easton's more talented than Ryan is a "slam?"

Dumb.

i guess it is not a slam, but it just seemed like a putdown. maybe i am just in a pissy mood because my favorite songwriter just canceled a show (not his fault, but still...) that I have been excited about for the last two months. so maybe i am a little sensitive right now.

It should be noted that Easton was in Nashville last night, just like Ryan. Easton made the trip to Chicago.

This'll just never make any sense to me. So you drove 7 hours total, yet didn't figure it'd be worth sticking around to see a guy play music that mines a similar territory as Matthew Ryan? Confusing doesn't come close to capturing this ...

to clarify, i drove from Milwaukee to Waukegan, jumped on the train. I took the train when i saw the weather forecast. Once i found out that Matthew Ryan wasnt going to be there, i wanted to take an earlier train. I did meet up w/ a friend and had dinner & coffee beforehand, so i tried to make my trip worth my while

Nothing against Tim Easton, but i was pretty disappointed and wanted to head out asap if M.Ryan wouldnt be there. If weather was fine, i probably woulda stayed.

holy crap, the roads were awful from Waukegan to Milwaukee! Wisconsin does the crappiest job at plowing highways, roads, etc. That state is broke when it comes to plowing

I'd be pissed at Ryan if I were you - no reason he couldn't have made the show.

EDIT: And by "Ryan," I am referring not only to Matthew Ryan, but also this guy.
