Let me be the first to say, should have been higher.
Excellent start.
68 seems fine for singles poll, as long as a good number of them with large lists as well.
Always puzzled by the popularity of the album poll over the singles poll. Singles poll is so much more fun. But I guess that's the way it goes in the world of elite music.

US Chart Position: #70 (Hot 100), #6 (Modern Rock)
UK Chart Position: #85
Music Under Fire Review: First off, let me say that I was not expecting something 8:36 long and this is something most bands do not do since they want to get their point across for what the rest of the album sounds like. If I were to take anything from this song and make an album based on just this one song, I would stand by the fact that this album is not upbeat, nor is it going to be over the edge with poppiness or catchy hooks, like many bands do to throttle their stardom. Death Cab, having more than a following may just further showcase each instrument, which is something that has been overlooked on the course of their past two albums.
"I Will Possess Your Heart" would make me look so right if this were the case for Narrow Stairs. The song is really just your classic DCFC intrumental, like that in "Stability" from the Stability EP (which is their longest song - 12:22 to be exact). It only takes a mere four minutes and thirty-six seconds until we hear Gibbard chime in, yet the song still does not pick up.
I'll get straight to the point - you'll love this if you're a DCFC fan, but it is by no means better than FIVE of the songs on Plans. I'll even name them: "Soul Meets Body", "Your Heart Is An Empty Room", "Brothers On A Hotel Bed", "Summer Skin", and "I Will Follow You Into The Dark". For me, Death Cab's best songs have generally been around three and a half minutes.
I'm not quite sure the purpose of making this song their single, since it ranks up there with other songs I would put at the end of an album (this song falls second in their track listing), but I can appreciate the slowed down instrumentation they used, although it wouldn't surpass one of my favorites "Transatlanticism".
The song eventually picks up at 6:46, but alas, it is too long for me. Perhaps their plan is to throw everyone off with this song and leave the true gems on the album to be heard later, afterall, it IS the singles that are killing the artists, isn't it? Cough, Cough!
"I Will Possess Your Heart" may be the "Yellow" of Parachutes - 6.9 out of 10.

I forgot to mention in the first post that this is, in my opinion, probably the strongest and most consistent top 100 we've had. Not to get anyone's hopes up or anything.
Thank god that Death Cab song isn't higher. I can't stand that shit at all.
I went from initally loathing it to kind of enjoying it, so when you even the two out, #99 seems about perfect.
If this is how the list starts, I think I'm going to like the results.
"I Will Possess Your Heart" probably benefited from a good amount of mid level votes..... i had it on my list, but nowhere near the top ten

Digital Spy Review: Mystery Jets were a bit too odd to be taken seriously on their 2006 debut, Making Dens. With their unhealthy fascination with prog rock, and one of their dads on guitar duty, they had many indie fans rushing for cover behind their Razorlight safety blankets. However, with new single 'Young Love', the band have ditched the prog waffle, replaced the old fella with the rather fetching Laura Marling and crafted a bona fide smash.
Based around Marling and Blaine Harrison's wistful tales of a night-stand, it features a fabulous array of edgy, alluring lyrics. Despite Blaine's amusing recollection: "Is that you on the bus? Is that you on the train? You wrote your number on my hand. And it came off in the rain," Marling's seductive and sardonic responses win out, as she croons: "You don't need eyes to see if someone's got a heart of glass." Boasting sublime harmonies and the sort of bouncy bassline The Kooks would mug their own mums for, it should turn Mystery Jets from indie oddities into chart sensations.

Kind of amazing Kanye's only had three top ten's on the SOMB list.
Didn't know this was eligible. Good song.

Also, Paul, I like that you're putting where other singles placed on previous lists. Genius touch.

B&S Online Review: As the Chicago-born visionary is showing with each new tune, the conscious hip hop crowd have a new hero.
Lupe joins the likes of Common and Talib Kweli in the eternal battle against mainstream hip hop’s material obsessions and imaginative subject matter vacuum.
The previous taster single from the upcoming ‘Lupe Fiasco’s The Cool’ album, ‘Dumb It Down’, was just a little too left-field and out there for many tastes, but ‘Superstar’ stands as a much more sensible choice of flagship single, blending Lupe’s characteristic easy vocal flow with a pleasantly lumbering piano-led beat, a soulful hook, and the odd sample and sound effect. Even Judge Jules played it on Pete Tong’s Radio One show recently!

Clash Music Review: The Castle Donington group have lit up a pale, wane emotionally bereft British indie scene with a series of superb singles and a debut album that is by turns insane and utterly brilliant.
While their scenester clothes and oh-so-quirky dance moves may irk the indie purists, there is no denying that Late of The Pier have the tunes. “Heartbeat” opens like a lost relic from the 80s, all power dressing and Michael J Fox movies before taking a turn for the demented. With a sense of the operatic surely inherited from Freddie Mercury’s mic stand, “Heartbeat” explodes into a shrieking, writhing chant as catchy as it is confusing. A brilliant primer for one of the year’s best debut albums so far.

Digital Spy Review: Adele Laurie Blue Adkins must be feeling the pressure right now. Though her career to date comprises just one 7"-only single, she's received almost as much press coverage as that other mouthy Londoner with a big, soulful voice and oodles of attitude. To put the hype into context, it took poor Amy a couple of years to nab a Brit Award; Adele's managed it in a couple of months.
'Chasing Pavements', her first proper single, is a mellow, sensuous slice of old-school soul. Its teenager-in-love lyrics are fairly unremarkable, but Adele's voice is a revelation, steering the big, brassy chorus through its melodic twists and turns with consummate ease. In fact, as you realise the precise nature of that haunting emotion in her voice – bruised defiance, we'd call it - everything falls into place. Now that's what all the fuss is about.

US Chart Position: #66 (Hot 100), #36 (Modern Rock)
UK Chart Position: #55
allgigs.co.uk Review: It's been such an incredible year or so for Paramore. With the band members being of ages 17-23, it seems impossible that they could become Grammy-nominated. Lead singer 'Hayley Williams' was voted by Rock Sound magazines readers as most influential female, and even the band's guitarist 'Josh Farro' recently got in a confrontation with Hilary Clinton during her election campaign.
The single 'That's What You Get' is the fourth release from their second studio album 'Riot!' The song itself is typically Paramore. It features the usual pop-punk based guitar and drums, with the addition of some heavier riffs and beats compared to previous efforts on 'Misery Business' and 'Hallelujah'. Hayley Williams's vocals work well with the song, the inclusion of a catchy chorus makes it easy listen too. This has always been Paramore's biggest appeal and their fan base has soared because of their bouncy and catchy songs. 'That's What You Get' will never achieve the success that 'Misery Business' has had, but it's a likeable number and anybody interested in pop, punk or emo based music should have a listen.

I am even starting to doubt that any record will be capable of satisfying the hopes that I hold for Black Sea. Given with the astonishing amount of great music out there. I rarely know what is going on in the current music scene. Let stand alone that I anxiously await a new album. This time around I will gladly make an exception to this nonexistent habit of mine. The rating? 5 stars if he will be capable of maintaining this kind of level over the whole record. We will wait and see won we? I even adore the cover of this one.

Good list so far. Really anticipating picking up these new songs later and giving 'em a few listens.
That Fennesz song was a single? Nice.
That and the Late of the Pier song are the only ones I've actually heard so far.
Huzzah for Paramore and Lupe making the grade.
I love that second verse in the Lupe song where he just lets the vowels hang through the beat and then punctuates it off with the hard consonant. I know that makes the song required listening, but it's worth it.
Great thread.
A little disappointed that this made it in 2008. Not because I don't love it, but mainly because it's getting Mr Brightsided. Don't vote for this in 2009.

thebeatreview.blogspot.com Review: Okay, single #1 "Human" from the album Day & Age is fulfilling but then another song from their album leaked and it is the second single in the US titled "Spaceman". I'm actually getting to realise how good this band is. I'm not a huge fan but I'm starting to become. It's too early to say that the album is going to be one of the best rock albums of the year but I'm pretty much getting the clues slowly.
"Spaceman" is quite different from Human as this one has more heavy guitars and has a more rock-ish sound. It started with a group type chant "oooohhh..." which is like a group of football fans watching a match. It's actually complementing and a great way to start a song. The beat is infectious and addictive and much more to say they've quite stepped up their level. I'm not going to excoriate this because I know, there's not much negativeness going on. "Spaceman" is quite a cliff hanger for us because we are eager to hear their new album which is going to be big. Not that the two songs are the only commendable in the album, but based on early reviews it's really exciting to hear what's up with these guys.
Other notes: It's too early for them to release a new single while Human is just charting across the globe. Anyways, maybe because of "Human" merely flopping in across the states as R&B / Hip-Hop is dominating the US charts recently.

Kid Cudi is one of a few new artists to come to Kanye West's G.O.O.D Music record label. If you haven't heard Day N Night yet, firstly where you been? Secondly, you are in for a big surprise. This track has a UK theme through & through.
The massive Crookers Remix has put new life into an already top tune, the UK Garage style beats are really what is going on in the UK Urban Scene at the moment, so catch the vibe! Let's hope this is the sort of music Kid Cudi will continue to put out in his career. Probably my favourite song of the moment...

MusicOMH.com Review: The last time we met Elbow, lead singer Guy Garvey was nursing a broken heart, and the result was their finest album yet in Leaders Of The Free World. A downbeat masterpiece, it enhanced Garvey's reputation as one of the finest lyricists of his generation.
For Grounds For Divorce, they've not exactly lightened up, but they have become extremely loud. "I've been working on a cocktail called grounds for divorce" bellows Garvey before a huge, clanking, almost industrial soundscape crashes in. "They rock" may not be a term you associate with Elbow, but in this instance it's very appropriate.
And as ever with Elbow, the lyrics deserve a review of their own - a beautifully descriptive account of an alcoholic father, drinking to his "seldom seen kid" and taking in the various unsightly attractions of his local pub: the "whispering of jokers", "little town whores" and "twisted karaoke" and so on.
There's also a nice twist at the end where it's revealed that the 'seldom seem kid' is doomed to follow in his father's footsteps in the line "someday we'll be drinking with the seldom seen kid". A typical slice of Elbow magic.

Decent album, although there are a bunch of songs of prefer to "Golden Age". Their attempts at funk often seem a bit clumsy.

top40.about.com Review:
The Bottom Line
It might sound like a pepped up version of Corey Hart's chestnut "Sunglasses At Night" to some, but that rocking singalong chorus completes the sale here. Finally, it seems that US pop radio is starting to give in to the peppy, polished Disney pop selling droves of albums in a down music market, and this song is leading the way. Miley Cyrus personalizes the lyrics and delivers vocals like a pro. This song deserves to land in the top 10.
Pros
* Upbeat pounding dance-pop beat
* Miley's polished vocals
* Rock edge on the chorus
* Personalizing of the lyrics
Cons
* Little to complain about here
Description
* Throbbing dance-friendly bass line
* Enticing, dramatic vocals
* Light rock guitars announce the chorus
Guide Review - Miley Cyrus - See You Again
15-year-old Miley Cyrus has amassed a long string of single appearances on the US pop charts both as herself and as her TV alter-ego Hannah Montana. There have been 18 at last count, but none have made it into the top 20 until now. At last Miley Cyrus is experiencing pop radio support and her single is exploding into a major hit. Many would say it's about time for an artist who has back to back 3 million selling albums to her credit. However, US pop radio has been slow to embrace the Disney pop style which borrows heavily from classic bubblegum.
Fortunately, "See You Again" brings back a core genre from US pop music history and makes us all feel the propulsive joy of a killer bassline and singalong chorus. Many adult listeners point out the similarity of the song's structure to that of Corey Hart's 80's classic "Sunglasses At Night." Similarities are evident, but where "Sunglasses" feels claustrophobic, Miley makes her sound positively celebratory.
Miley Cyrus carries off the vocal performance here with all of the professional panache of established divas like Kylie Minogue or her own fellow Disney star Hilary Duff. Cyrus receives co-songwriting credits here under her birth name Destiny Hope Cyrus. Refreshingly, the lyrics are all teen romance drama. If, indeed, "she's just being Miley," we want much much more.

fluxblog Review: It’s probably a good idea for the Gang Gang Dance to tighten up. Their previous records have had interesting moments, but generally suffered from sounding a bit too much like a drunk Siouxsie Sioux fucking around with an even more inebriated Banshees at soundcheck. The voice and the aesthetic was there, but the discipline was not. “House Jam,” despite its annoyingly generic title, finds the group embracing hooks and stronger grooves, but not at the expense of their loose, quasi-mystical vibe. It’s almost as if they remembered that the word “dance” was in the name of their band and decided to make good on that promise.

cokemachineglow Review: Let me get this out of the way: this is the best AC/DC track since “Thunderstruck” and I am fucking psyched. I don’t know how it happened, because this is a serious retread, even by AC/DC standards. It opens like “Highway to Hell,” but without the rhythmic interest: Angus alone, riff out, and with a snare hit on four the drums enter. The chorus is paint-by-numbers, with Brian Johnson adding some embellishment around a big group vocal. It’s called “Rock ‘n Roll Train” and the refrain runs “you know she’s just like a runaway train (runnin’ right off the tracks).” Sounds like shit, right? Head on over to acdc.com and prepare to be amazed.
Another apparent liability is the presence of producer Brendan O’Brien, who with great pomp and no circumstance has razed several of Springsteen’s best attempts (and one of Neil Young’s, via Pearl Jam) at latter-day triumphs. And though O’Brien has made three Incubus albums I would kiss him on the mouth for making AC/DC bad-ass again. For the first time in decades, the Young brothers have a guitar sound that stands alongside, not cops to, their previous work. The drums are full and sharp, front and center in the mix where they need to be. Malcom is in the right channel, Angus is in the left, and Brian Johnson has lost an octave and a half without missing a step.
Of course, if you’re not already on board after thirty years, this won’t convert you. It’s still gleefully campy idiot-rock with nonsensical lyrics vaguely detailing a misogynist stereotype, some kind of angel/devil southern belle who’s hot to trot. I have no account for their politics, and for those of you who need more intellectualism than the band who made “Big Balls” typically provides, I’ll call you when they make Kid A. But those aboard know AC/DC’s brand of bad rock is inimitable, and the brothers still tread (shred?) where Jet and Airbourne can’t.
The elder-statesman-of-rock victory lap, replete with classic rock chartings and return-to-form pronouncements, is an industry constant, and though it’s true that this is one such return I venture that the hype has truth at the heart: this is an AC/DC more vigorous and present in the world than any of its contemporaries. Whether it’s O’Brien’s nostalgia or Angus Young’s self-overcoming will that did it, I am thankful as fuck that something split time in two, grabbed the skull-faced giant named “World-Conquering Ambition” and yolked it to a band who have little to gain and nothing to prove.

Neu! Magazine Review: Whilst ‘The Age Of The Understatement’ was more akin to The Rascals, this latest offering from Alex Turner and Miles Kane’s side project, is not at all like either The Arctic Monkeys or The Rascals. Strumming acoustic guitars with orchestral arrangements is definitely not a normal combination. However, strangely, it works. ‘Standing Next To Me’ is by no means a classic, but the name Alex Turner will always give it a good reputation.
The nature of The Last Shadow Puppets will always mean that the choruses are catchy and easy to sing along to. However, compared to previous single ‘The Age Of The Understatement’, this new release is only moderately exciting. This does not have the same feeling of mystery that ‘The Age Of The Understatement’ had. ‘Standing Next To Me’ is a much more normal song and the lyrics are easier to relate to. However, it lacks a drive in a certain direction. These two young men have too many ideas for this song. They are just having some fun though. It is epic, tight and memorable. The Last Shadow Puppets are an interesting project.

what I don't get is why there aren't more EP's in people's votes. I can claim to have heard 30 or more EPs this year, and in most cases EP > Single.
With the way things are,..a lot of new bands release digital EPs..it's a good way to get their music out there, and not just 1 or 2 songs.
So.....is someone compiling all these singles into easy-to-download zip files like in years past? Sendspace keeps crashing my browser

I couldn't tell you the difference between these guys, Fleet Foxes, and Frightened Rabbit. I'm not sure if that's because of real similarities or because of the amount of whiskey I've had this past year.
Most of the artists likely to do well on this chart (or better than the album chart at least) don't really put out EP's. A lot of them will just split two or three (maybe four) songs across two versions of the single. Essentially most of these releases have another three songs on them so they could be de facto EP's.

shunters22 reviewcentre.com Review: Good Points: - It's a catchy pop tune with Kylie effortlessly proving she is still the reigning Queen of Pop. - It's a dancefloor filler.
Bad Points: - People may be reminded of the 'Fever' album although Wow sounds more updated!
General comments: As the 2nd single of the 'X' album, Kylie brings us Wow. And Wow indeed! This little slice of pop perfection is just as tasty as 'Can't Get You Out Of My Head'. The song was written by Cathy Dennis who also wrote Can't Get You Out Of My Head so Wow was always going to be great. Many critics have slammed Kylie for ripping of Madonna's holiday. It's probably just me but I don't think Holiday and Wow sound anything like each other. Wow is so much more up to date and modern and allows Kylie's voice to remain cute and slinky. The song is full of nice piano rolls and pumping beats that it is just whats missing from the charts at the moment. Fun! Kylie has never proclaimed to be something she's not. She remains modest. I think that critics were anticipating her return just so they could make a name for themselves by being deliberately harsh and unjust. Alot of people say that '2 Hearts' was a flop. She scored a Number 4 in the UK and a Number 1 in her own country. Personally I think that Wow should be a sure fire Number 1. It's pop heaven with a little coat of sweetness. The critics are totally missing the point about Kylie's 'X' album and the singles being taken to promote them. Kylie is all about the fun! So get that Wow track spinning and get your groove on because Miss Minogue is here to stay.

monkeyboxingempire.blogspot.com Review: Less a nod to, than an athletic and sustained piece of how’s-your-father with, sixties soul, the hype surrounding this would be disappearing up it’s own arse by now were it not for the fact that this is a bomb track pure and simple. Comparisons with Amy Wino have been flying around for quite some time as have those with sixties icon (post-Memphis) Dusty Springfield, partly because Duffy has an amazing soul voice - although having platinum blonde hair kind of helps too. However, whereas, recently, people like Winehouse, Ronson and Gnarls Barkley have been pussy-footing around with retro stylings, this takes the full authentic route. It opens with some “Yeah, yeah, yeahs” from Duffy, chucks in a vintage organ sound, a nice shimmying beat, adds some strings, and then our heroine steams in with a tale about being seduced by someone while seeing someone else before finally blowing up into a soaring chorus that’ll have everyone dancing like a northern soul boy. I dunno what the album will turn out like but this is fucking giant! And she’s quite fit.

You guys. This Elbow song. Goddamn.
^ I know, right?
Wish I would have realized that "Good Morning" was a single this year. Idiot. I listened to that more than the majority of the songs on my list. Good list so far, though. I still need to check out a lot of these.
I wish I could have gotten my list together in time. I loved a lot of singles this year ... so far almost none of the ones mentioned, however.
Good start here, no songs I can really complain about. I would have liked to see "Grounds for Divorce" finish higher... I was surprised no one else really voted for "One Day Like This" for Elbow, too syrupy/cheesy? (Holy cow, I Love Your Eyes).
didn't even know that kylie came out with new material this year. good song, nice surprise seeing her on the list.
I dunno, a good four track EP fits well in the singles chart, and a good mini-album fits well in LP poll, although I agree they can get marginalised.
Good to see Paramore and Kid Cudi. Latter should be much higher but I didn't even hear it until RoBKoZ put it on his list so whatever, pretty good for a Cleveland rapper without an LP.
Super-LOL at those shitty AC/DC and Killers songs making it. Can't wait to see how high "Human' places.
"Rock 'n Roll Train" is fantastic and should be a good 50 spots higher.
Get fucked, The Good Dr. Bill.
I really need to finally pick up that Paramore album.
I cant belive people voted for miley cyrus whats next are the jonas brothers going to be on the countdown?
seriously. this countdown should have an 'elite music' filter
Spaceman's ranking reflects very negatively on the board's taste in singles, and music in general. I think everyone should take a 24 hour timeout from boarding to reflect.
Don't think I've ever heard Spaceman before, I kind of like it, they've really changed their sound a lot.
Still holding out hope that Solange's "I Decided" and Little Boots will place. It's the only thing I'm rooting for this year. Ooh, it would also be nice if "Fascination" placed even though I forgot to vote for it. Can't wait to listen to some of these tunes. Something tells me I'm gonna really enjoy that Paramore song.
two thoughts:
the reason i (and i assume many other boarders) didn't do the singles list is because of convoluted eligibility reasons. i started a list and then soon grew confused about which songs were singles and which were just songs that i really really loved from this year. if mitchell's big plan involves some sorta singles master list, i will definitely be voting next year.
second thought is where the hell is the mae shi cover of see you again? i was shocked not to see that paired with the post. anyone who doesn't like the original version should give the cover a shot.
Duffy beating Miley makes me sad. Mercy fucking sucks.
I listened to that Duffy song and I had one of those "Oh yeah, I know this song" moments. Is it on a commercial or something?
Also, Blitzen Trapper. This is like right up my alley. I think I got the name mixed up with another band I didn't like from 2007 so I never bothered to give this one a download. Shit, I need to get on this.
if i were fucking the singer of paramore i would definitely not tell her how bad her music is
i was wary of posting that but apparently shes only a few months younger than me
Yeah. She's mad cute in a "your ass is going to jail for putting it her butt" kinda way.
I looked it up; she's 19. She looks really young, though. Also, I recently saw her without make-up on some commercial thing for Guitar Hero - not good.

The Bottom Line
By all musical standards, the hard-brawling, hard-hitting MC we've come to know as Nas should've expired years ago. Nonetheless, he's still churning records at a decent rate, causing purists to cheer and critics to take a second look. No matter what side of the fence you fall on, "Hero" gives us all a reason to care again.
Pros
* Breathless flow, complex rhyme schemes
* Nas is still in top form after 16 years
Cons
* Nas sounds muted while tackling a bold topic
Description
* "Hero" is the lead cut from Nas' untitled album
* The song was produced by Polow Da Don
* It touches on the controversy surrounding his previous album title
Guide Review - Nas - "Hero" (Feat. Keri Hilson) (The Jones Experience/Def Jam)
"Hero," which features Keri Hilson, is the lead single from Nas' untitled 9th album, and it pretty much sums up not just the story behind the album's title controversy, but Nas' current status in hip-hop. It's the perfect soundtrack to the movie SuperNas, in which lead character Nasir Jones takes extreme measures in a bid to reinject some bite into hip-hop.
For all his brave posturing, though, Nas sounds rather muted on "Hero." His explanation borders on apologetic: "Still in musical prison, in jail for the flow," he rhymes, after insisting that the title change had nothing to do with pressure from his label bosses ("For the record, L.A. [Reid] and Doug Morris is riding with it"). Ironically, Doug Morris' name was actually censored on the album version of "Hero." Go figure.
"Hero" is not Nas' best single ever. Truthfully, he's capable of so much more. But, give Esco credit for rocking his Sunday best flow over Polow Da Don's catchy beat. How can you not cheer for hip-hop's favorite "Hero"?

contactmusic.com Review: Hype is ripe in the music industry. Bands come, they're hyped, they have their brief moment in the spotlight and then they phase out again. However bands like Black Kids, don't follow that trend. With Black Kids you can tell that they've come far as a band. Their musical journey has been long together, they've come through some challenging patches, but essentially they've made it through. They have so much potential.it simply emits from their music with a neon splendour.
With the music revolution that is underway, one can only but assume that Black Kids, like many others, will take their pose, where they rightfully deserve as a new and exciting band for the future. 'Gobbledigook' is a full-on mind-fuck of layered vocals, clattering drums, flamenco handclaps and, seemingly, unintelligible vocals - but, really, who out there speaks Icelandic? Neu! Magazine Review: Football chants from British Sea Power? Apparently so.
"Eas-eh! Eas-eh! Eas-eh" the tribal backing vocals shout. After a thankfully brief guitar-picking intro, in it comes. It's nice to see a bit more confrontation in the ocean of beige that is 'alternative'. The amount of times we've typed that word is untrue.
As it advances, it's not quite as apocalyptic as the title and chanting suggests. Too thoughtful and pondering for that. Example; "is that what the future holds?". For a bit more drive, some crusade-inspiring horns and stringed instruments help conjure up a feeling of going to war. On what? The devil, by the sounds of things. As good a reason as any, we suppose.
Not a bad track at all. The only thing it lacks is a bit more punch. It turns into a bit of an anti-climax after the excitement of the chanting dies down, only to be revived with less joy. It seems like they're holding back an urge to go crazy.
Maybe they should be going to war on self restraint instead?

BlackPlastic.co.uk Review: Let's keep this brief as we have all but bestowed single of the year status on this track already anyway but it is worth noting the re-release, which comes packed in with a couples of remixes.
The Aeroplane Remix lifts the foot of the gas slightly to create a more electronic but slower paced track. Befittingly it sounds French (Aeroplane are actually from the home of Soulwax and the Glimmers, Ghent in Belgium) but importantly it gives those lovely Au Revoir Simone vocals a bit more space. The result is a bit melancholic and beautiful, a soundtrack for the journey home from Paris rather than the trip out.
The Justus Köhncke Remix is similar in many ways but twists things in a slightly different direction. It still feels retrospective but has a touch more positivity. It lacks those Au Revoir vox though but what it does have my friends, is space. Bags of it. Over it's ten minutes it is one of those pieces of music that is more about the parts that aren't played than those that aren't. The drum kick is nice and fresh and it combines well with some warm melodic instrumentation to make a sophisticated big room sound that is much more understated than you would expect from a remix of a track as exciting as Paris.
Both are awesome and compliment each other well. Grab on iTunes, eMusic, Boomkat or in Woolworths (joke, they've probably closed down since I wrote this).

whateverhte YouTube Comment: I'm not saying the subject of Lil Wayne's songs is great, but if you ever listened to say Amnesiac (or 15 step) and you know anything about Radiohead's music taste I'm sure they would kill to have come up with the BEAT of A milli (which was the producer Bangladesh, anyway). There are some great points to Lil Wayne's music, even if you think he's a joke. Don't be an idiot like the Gallagher Bros. please and dismiss stuff from other music styles, RH fans are not like that.

Kaleb Nation Official Site (kalebnation.com) Review: I don’t enjoy Chris Brown much. Say Goodbye was only slightly listenable. I didn’t particularly enjoy No Air either (especially after hearing it 1,923,496 times on the radio). His music usually reeks of mediocre, so you can imagine my surprise when he puts out a song I can listen to (With You) and THEN a song I actually like.
With the song Forever, Chris Brown has graduated from meaningless, hit-of-the-minute tracks and has put out a song that is reminiscent of a Nelly electronic dance remix. I like this one especially because it reminds me of something you’d hear at the water park- just that soft beat that keeps on.
Go on and Puzzle my Puzzler Sore. Chris Brown with a listenable song- who woulda guessed? Maybe there’s still hope for that talented voice. The album comes out June 3, 2008.

Common Sense Media Review:
Parents Need To Know
Parents need to know that this single by four of rap's hottest -- and sometimes most explicit -- performers celebrates the thrill of being rich, stylish, and a great rapper, but contains only a few expletives, violent images, and misogynistic references.
Families can talk about why bragging is such a part of hip hop and rap culture. Research the origins of the genre and learn about rap battles and improv rapping to find out about the competitive nature of this musical form. Why do you think it's important in hip hop and rap culture to be the best? Does it have anything to do with the backgrounds and upbringing of these artists? How do these rappers define success?
Message
Social Behavior:
Humility might be a virtue, but you won't find it on this single. The song revolves around each of the four rappers explaining why "no one on the corner has swagger like us."
Consumerism:
It's all about jewels, clothes, cars, and lots of money.
Drugs/Alcohol/Tobacco:
Violence
Lil Wayne raps "...Write your name on the bullet make you feel special."
Sex
Very few references to sex on this single. Lil Wayne does rap "Mami scream 'Papi no mas,' run up in your sh-t, just me no moss."
Language
Sh-t is said five times and f-ck and the N-word once each.

That's it for tonight. #70-41 tomorrow starting around 1pm.
pretty great run right there

I dunno, I kind of got used to Nas not dropping any particularly memorable lines in his song. I just liked that the song sounded kind of urgent, which is far more than can be said for the likes of "Thief's Theme," "Bridging the Gap," "Hip-Hop is Dead," or the rest of his horrifically regressive singles output since "Made U Look".
And what are the terrible lyrics in "Forever," minus the lame but relatively innocuous Doublemint shit? The line Paul quoted is one of my favorite chorus hooks of the year.
If possible - "Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover" may be more painful than "I'm Not Going to Teach Your Boyfriend How to Dance With You". I didn't think it could be accomplished, yet here I sit with my ears bleeding from an even more terrible song by The Black Kids.

I like your use of the sendspace player, Paul. Allows for a couple of seconds of listening vs download & forget/toss.
that's where the confusion came from, i think
i'm pretty sure it's not a single, but people saw it on the P4K "best songs" list and made the jump
remember how great Swagga Like Us is?
the sample is really the only important thing about SLU. If the lyrics were better, that probably would've been nice, but who cares really.
"Run It!" and "Kiss Kiss" were both fantastic but relied heavily on their guests for swagger/emotional support. "Forever" is all CB. Not to mention that pretty much all the big R&B hits that followed this year kind of sounded like it.
I prefer his sharper hard-consonant-emphasis style as opposed to the balladry. When he drops onto "Get Like Me" with that sinuous "the name you know of/A little bit of change, now your boy done blown up" and his voice just pops on the track, that's the kind of thing I can get behind.
well if we go around comparing things to "Get Like Me"
just listened to that again and now I know I'm going to end up saying "this rap money's OK" like five or six times at work tomorrow
i've heard Forever so many times i can sort of accept it at this point, but i still hate Chris Brown and pretty much every song he's ever done. i give him amazing props for writing Disturbia and having the sense to give it to Rihanna and not ruin it himself, and i love Get Like Me and his verse on there for all the reasons Raj said. he just pops in, delivers some goofy shit and pops out.
Get Like Me isn't going to place, is it?
"stuntin' is a habit, just gotta have it" is the best part of Get Like Me
We voted for this stupid Black Kids song last year.
Then again, I think I was one of the voters for that EP so...
Regrets, Cool Blue And Lil' Oaty has a few.
i feel like i might have voted for the EP too. one of their songs sounds exactly like a song my friend's band did except The Black Kids are worse.
Can't believe I forgot "Get Like Me."

Would've voted Forever higher if not for the reasons Raj lists.
Shitty re-recordings this year of everything on that EP. Stellastarr* stuff today, loving the list thus.
Thanks Paul, surprised the list is posted so soon, great job. Not surprised the list has sucked so far. And will continue to.
not surprising, but it's kind of funny that the "Mercy" I voted for, is not the one on these lists.
Really good song probably has b-sides anyway.
Look at the stupid way Rough Trade released "No Lucifer" as an EP. Could have been my #1 if they'd not been so daft.
I'm dreading about 4 more Radiohead singles and just as many Weezer singles.

I predict 2 weezer singles in the top ten, at least.

Euphoric.
Still a big fan of Superstar, although now I think I should've had Hip-Hop Saved My Life higher. Paris, Tokyo wasn't a single right?
Anyway, not a huge fan of the remix.
Also I'm in love with this Mystery Jets song, never heard them or Laura Marling, what else should I check out?
Mystery Jets: You should probably head to their YouTube channel and listen to "Flakes", "Two Doors Down" (probably still to come) and "Half In Love With Elizabeth" from the 2nd album as well as "The Boy Who Ran Away" and "You Can't Fool Me Dennis" from the first.
Laura Marling: "Ghosts", "Cross Your Fingers" and "New Romantic" song-wise, for a better representation of the album "The Captain and The Hourglass" and "Shine". Also try "5 Years Time" by Noah and The Whale, she used to be a full time member.
Interesting. Just listened to all that. Only other Mystery Jets song I even mildly enjoyed was "Two Doors Down". I did like every one of those Laura Marling songs though, I'll have to pick up one of her albums. Also I didn't realize it, but I've heard that Noah and the Whale song before and really enjoyed it. Thanks for the recs.
These kinds of discoveries are what make the singles list so great.
Bah, should've done my research. Paris would've been #4 on my list probably.
EDIT: Anyone else sittin' here refreshing the page, eagerly waiting on Paul to restart? No? Alright then.

What Is The Shit? Review: Poppity hoppity zippty zow! I like this one - it's a fun uppity number that kinda reminds me of "Holiday" off Blue Album, although a bit more generic. "I'm dreamin' in the morning / I'm dreamin' all through the night / and when I'm dreamin' I know that it's alright." Something about this line just stands out as remarkably lazy, I don't know why. It's like the most obvious rhyme in pop music history.
But there's a really cool bouncy bridge here, and I really like the weird 80's-synth opening that makes no sense. Good stuff! (Except for maybe that "I don't wanna get witcha program" part at the end that makes even less sense.)

The Skinny Review: On this first single from The Stand Ins, companion piece to 2007's critically acclaimed The Stage Names, Okkervil River's Will Sheff takes the role of beleaguered captain, pointing out the similarities between life on the road and life at sea. With the propulsive beat and wandering bassline that channels Lust for Life, the song perfectly evokes the giddiness and aimlessness of travel. Meanwhile, Sheff’s desperate yelp is a counterpoint to Jonathan Meiburg's resigned baritone. Meiburg recently left the band to concentrate on his pet project, Shearwater; this story of a man overboard renders Lost Coastlines' balanced tale of touring particularly poignant.

Buzzin Pop Music Review: When She & Him first appeared onto the musical radar back in July, they seemed a bit like every publicist’s dream. The boy girl duo consists of actress Zooey Deschanel (She), who appeared in every music fan’s favourite film ‘Almost Famous’ and M. Ward (& Him), every music critic’s favourite all-rounder.
M. Ward’s blend of country tinged soft indie mixed with Deschanel’s sweet, creamy American drawl is a throwback to an imagined era where lovers sang to each other openly about their love in simple pop songs. Current single ‘Why Do You Let Me Stay Here?’ now also recalls the sweet harmonies of 60s girl-group pop.
‘Why Do You Let Me Stay Here?’, is She & Him’s second single from their first album Volume One (does this mean they are obliged to bring out a Volume Two?) and it is exactly this type of pop/country record. Simplistic, outmoded lyrics such as “Why don’t you sit right down and stay awhile?”, backed by shifting piano and faint acoustic guitar describe the sense of longing and self-doubt that permeates the whole song.
Creating these little gems is She & Him’s speciality, and they do it again here on the new single. However, largely due to my bias towards the Him half of She & Him, I do find the single rather She heavy.

Digital Spy Review: The Tings Tings' success has come a little too easily for some critics. Singer Katie's pop past in girl group Total Knock Out (they supported Atomic Kitten and Steps, don't you know) provoked suspicion, while eyebrows were raised further when she admitted she didn't really know how to play the guitar. These cred-denting setbacks would halt the progress of less determined acts, but fortunately The Tings Tings have a trick up their sleeves - an ace new single.
The re-released 'That's Not My Name', the song that brought the band to our attention in 2007, is built around a hypnotic drum beat, plenty of hand-claps and a chanted chorus not a million miles away from 'Hey Mickey'. It's glorious fun and sure to go down a storm in sweaty indie discos. Like a well-shaken can of cola, this track's brimming with sticky, yummy, fizzy goodness - enough to silence the naysayers for now.

exclaim.ca Review: There's a reason why we put Cut Copy on the cover of our December/January issue: In Ghost Colours was an exceptional album that gave the long-running trio overdue recognition and oft-stagnant indie kids not only some new heroes to worship but also a reason to shake off the shyness and just let loose.
In defying any sort of genre pigeonholes with a sound that took inspiration from shoegaze, new wave, house, electro and Krautrock, they delivered hook-laden pop music that reigned supreme. As a result, 11 out of the album's 15 songs could have been singles (we'll disregard the four interludes).
Knowing that, this spot really could have gone to any one of those songs — they're all worthy contenders. However, there's just so much to "Hearts On Fire" that made it the album's centerpiece, both literally and because of its standout features. Dan Whitford's big lyrical heart ("Your hand is out and brushes mine/A moment that is frozen as we hang in time") throws it back to the retro romanticism of any one of the New Romantics or new wave powerhouses. Meanwhile, the sound bubbling up from under him recalled New Order's Technique, thanks to the song's overwhelming taste for Ibiza-leaning acid house and that unmistakable Peter Hooky bass line. Throw in some manipulated Italo House diva screams and it was ecstasy without the dehydration and aching jaw.

Blender Review: The band formerly known as Panic! at the Disco are now exclamation point-less. But don't expect these breathless, cabaret-loving emo dramatics to get all mopey and non-spastic on new album Pretty. Odd. (get it?! sigh). They might've ditched the excessive punctuation but it seems like someone in the Panic camp picked up a copy of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band during the recording of the new record — the pouncing-rabbit piano line, heralding horns and overzealous strings are straight outta McCartney-land. It's peppy; Ben Folds wishes he wrote this song. Lead singer Brendon Urie reins in his run-on style, going for a more traditional approach — good news for anyone over the age of 15. The song is about being discombobulated by the touring lifestyle, not knowing where or when you're waking up; they're "feelin' so good" even though they're "losin' the feeling of feeling unique." So while the band might not be as singular here, that's not necessarily a bad thing.

residentadvisor.net Review: Two of nü-disco's heavy hitters together on one track with a B-side by DFA's newest hit act. It all sounds a bit like PR, I know, but Aeroplane collaborating with Kathy Diamond is indeed a wet dream for many and the two don't disappoint on their debut single. It helps that neither really need to radically alter their style. Aeroplane produce what has now become their signature style: a thick, live bass underpins a wordless chorus and complementary synth lines that get epic just as often as they mark time. Chic guitars just happen to drop by during the chorus.
But if Aeroplane's backing would sound perfectly serviceable as an instrumental, Diamond takes it to another, er, plane entirely. Words rarely matter in disco and that's the case here as well—longing, regret and dancing are all covered in equal measure. But if the lyrics don't do much more than signify, Diamond's voice is a rarity these days—a gentle diva, capable of hitting any note you'd care to have her hit, without needing to embellish with the dreaded melisma.
Hercules & Love Affair, who have been remixing quite a bit lately, turn up on the flip for a restrained rework of the original. Unlike their trope-heavy Chaz Jankel remix, however, the H&LA approach works wonders when taken in concert with Aeroplane's over-the-top disco-isms. Hearing Diamond sing over the minimal backing reminds of an early '90s dub, a beautiful ghost in the pop machine. Excellent work all around.

Clash Music Review: Looks like British Sea Power already have their summer plans in place.
From the sound of the first single to be released from their forthcoming third album, the Brighton-based band will be touring the festivals of Europe. They will do so with a stirring festival anthem in place as Waving Flags celebrates European youth’s annual disregard for normal life in favour of epic escapist weekends of drink, drugs and music. With soaring guitars and uplifting harmonies, Waving Flags is a notch up the populist scale for the band but as anthems go, this is worth standing to attention.

musicOMH.com Review: Now would be just the time to launch a study into the effects on sixth-form classes of removing young women from the system. It is hard to believe that among the current glut of Kates, Adeles, and Lilys that there's a single girl taking A'level French in the southeast of the UK. Laura Marling's new single, Ghosts, puts her firmly at the top of the class of 2008.
The song is a simple tale of a young couple and the baggage of past relationships: "the ghosts that broke my heart before I met you". Marling deftly captures the mixed feelings of trepidation and hope that infuse nascent relationships without ever slipping into the trap of sixth-form poetry. And the weirdly reassuring refrain of "it's not like I believe in ever lasting love" suggests a world-weariness that far exceeds what you might expect from a 17 year old.
The deceptively simple lyrics and complex emotions are delivered with a hypnotic guitar line and understated vocal that swells to a heart busting orchestral and choral climax. Ghosts is a remarkably affecting song in every respect and a very early contender for single of the year.

musicOMH.com Review: After the widely popular success of her previous single 1234 (you don't hit it much bigger than an Apple advert nowadays, do you?), indie soulstress Feist returns with another offering from her 2007 album The Reminder.
The jaunty I Feel It All presents Feist with her usual cool composure. As the track bounces along with a tambourine, bells, and a light drum shuffle, she offers poetic imagery intermingled with typical pop lyrics -- "Stranded in a fog of words, loved him like a winter bird" stands right alongside lines like "I love you more, I don't know what I knew before".
While her playful vocal delivery suggests an upbeat version of Cat Power, Feist's musical backing is decisively more current in its indie-pop flair (as opposed to Chan Marshall's retro feel). There's nothing new here, but Feist has found her niche in indie pop and continues to express herself almost effortlessly through this pleasant, straightforward single.

Rolling Stone Review: Love has always been a high-stakes business transaction for Beyoncé, ever since that lousy boyfriend maxed out her credit card in "Bills, Bills, Bills." "Single Ladies" is her definitive statement on that subject. The beat, courtesy of The-Dream and Tricky Stewart, is irresistible and exuberant, the vocal hook is stormy and virtuosic, and her lesson is blunt: Seal the deal. With a shiny ring. Or else.

cokemachineglow Review: Truth be told, until recently I had assumed the Kills were one of the ultra-hip, slavishly dressed The ____s bands that managed to “save” rock and roll for our future children and house pets, like, seven years ago, and I had dutifully written them off as such. After a bit of research I confirmed that, yes, they seem totally Kool and the Gang (and they know it), and, eh, the Ramones wannabe jacket has got to go. Oh, and another thing: why did I write them off? It’s true that their debut Keep On Your Mean Side (2003) was pretty formulaic in its balls-out blues punk swagger, but follow-up No Wow (2005), as Peter already noted, was a genuinely licentious romp through the windblown ashes of Dry (1992) and Rid of Me (1993) that had at least some of us gripping our crotches with one hand and significant others with the remaining.
So it’s not surprising that soon-to-be-released Midnight Boom has tussled my hair enough times to coax more than a few BEST ROCK ALBUM OF THE YEAR SO FARs out of me, and “Last Day Of Magic” has a lot to do with that. If there’s any evolution from past efforts here, it’s in the sheer economy of it all: guitarist Hotel keeps his fits—all metallic sheen and moaning atrophy—to a disciplined minimum, letting VV steer the ship with her characteristically immediate vocal hooks and to-be-reckoned-with forebodings (“There’s only so much you can hide / Before I corner you”). While “Last Day Of Magic” is a far cry from the “eye of the storm” placidity VV chants about here, it also never achieves the eruption it seems to be hurtling towards, which is just as well; the Kills have built a respectable career on “little tornadoes” such as this, and “Last Day Of Magic” is as immediate and downright fun as this type of storm gets.

Pitchfork Media Review: At once futuristic and crushingly nostalgic, this blind couple from Mali's first collaboration with Blur's Damon Albarn is a haunting electro-pop experiment that drips with soul. It begins with Mariam Doumbia in a conversation with gentle violins that sound beamed down from the International Space Station, the gives itself over to a synthetic rhythm and an arpeggiating keyboard. It has a lonely tinge that equally evokes Alan Shepard all alone on a suborbital flight and a lone traveler crossing the desert on a cold, starry night. It's honestly hard to pin down a song that has as many emotional currents running through it as this one, but it's truly a song for any state of mind, no matter where you are.

Pitchfork Media Review: Sweden's latitude would suggest it doesn't have the sunniest of climes, but what do facts matter? Air France epitomized the tropical beats and sunny, sometimes-borrowed melodies of neighboring acts from Jens Lekman and the Tough Alliance to Studio on last year's On Trade Winds EP, which included the standout "Beach Party". With no advance hype, the Gothenburg, Sweden-based duo recently released the nearly 23-minute No Way Down via the Sincerely Yours website. "Collapsing at Your Doorstep" is just one of the highlights, imagining a warm, beautiful world where Saint Etienne and the Avalanches might buy a summer home together. As vinyl crackles, all manner of soaring strings, bird noises, Caribbean percussion, flitting woodwinds, tightly woven guitars, booming horns, and ecstatic vocals create a childlike symphony to glee as if it's as easy as spreading out a blanket on the beach.
Like labelmates the Honeydrips' "Fall From a Height", "Collapsing at Your Doorstep" centers on samples of what sound like children's voices. "Sort of like a dream, isn't it?" a girlish voice asks; "No," a boyish one shoots back, pausing just long enough before adding, "...better." It makes the track more weird and wonderful that the only occurrence of that dialogue I can find on Google came from late-1980s TV fantasy-romance "Beauty and the Beast". One of the sampled voices asks us to keep the idyllic place Air France discover in this track a secret (oops, sorry). Either way, no beasts allowed.

Prefix Mag Review: It's been nearly over 30 years since we last heard from David Byrne and Brian Eno together -- but now they are back in full force with their upcoming record Everything That Will Happen Will Happen Today. The first single, "Strange Overtones," is classic meets current -- the filtered synthesizers are in place, the funky layered beats are thumping, and the guitars are screaming.
Over the course of 30 years, Eno's main duty has been manning the production position, and the evidence is clear on this recording -- the mix on this track is absolutely stellar and highlights one of the best Byrne vocal performances in years. When these guys get together it's the culmination of two of the world's most consistent and important innovators - "Strange Overtones" is hopefully only the beginning. They'll ask for your e-mail and zip code, but don't fret - it's worth it.

Digital Spy Review: 'I Know Ur Girlfriend Hates Me' - now there's a title to get the cogs whirring. Why does she hate you? What on earth did you do to her? Who's more at fault here? Well, it all started when this blonde, pretty pop singer called Annie started spending a bit too much time with the jealous lass's boyfriend...
The lyrics may have a bitter edge - "Girl you think you're something but have I got news for you", Annie scoffs at one point - but musically this is sweet, scrumptious electropop that's nearly as moreish as 'Chewing Gum', Annie's nearly-hit from a few years back. To be perfectly honest, if Annie does everything in life with this much panache, you can't blame the poor girlfriend for getting a bit paranoid.

randb.about.com Review: Usher is back, folks. That's right, Usher Raymond IV is getting ready to drop a new album later in 2008 and here's the first single, "Love In This Club," featuring the rapper Young Jeezy. I don't know about you, but I haven't completely warmed up to this song yet. It's an okay song, but singing about making love in a nightclub sounds more like an R. Kelly move than an Usher one. Also, the production, which is by Polow Da Don, sounds too much like a cheap knockoff of Timbaland's style. I dunno, maybe the song grows on you after awhile.

Pitchfork Media Review: As superficially thrilling as the Read & Burn era was, it was hard to shake the feeling that Colin Newman was making a very conscious attempt to create music that belied his age-- not so much rebutting those who would dare question his band's relevance as drowning them out. Strange then to hear him address the subject so directly on this early track from Object 47. "Are you an also-ran, finished and inconsequential?" he asks over a sleek, Hook-ish bass line. The words suggest resignation, but everything else indicates that the question is purely rhetorical: Wire is in knowing command here. The guitar volleys may not swarm and sting, but they no longer need to, as all members pitch in to do their part. There's no denying that "One of Us" lacks the visceral punch of 00s Wire, but its impression lingers long after-- proof that relevance isn't always measured in direct proportion to volume.

thedwarf.com.au Review: Empire of the Sun, Pnau’s Nick Littlemore and Luke Steele from The Sleepy Jackson’s side project is a pleasant surprise. All those sci-fi posters around town got me wondering, who the hell are these guys? Hey isn’t that Luke Steele?
It’s a collaboration that has been a long time coming. The boys seamlessly combine Steele’s unique vocals and Sleepy Jackson’s sense of groove with PNAU’s ever danceable beats. Walking on a Dream was an incredible choice for first single, as it fills the room with psychedelia I feel the urge to find a field and dance around, arms flailing in the air . It’s easily a danceable track but also has a refreshing lazy Sunday feel about it which I assume will ensure it gets excessive airplay during the summer (hopefully not an overload because there is nothing worse than getting sick of a genuinely good song).
The obvious comparison is MGMT; both channel a psychedelic sound and image (most prominently through their music videos) and create incredibly infectious electronic tracks. While MGMT is filled with a little more excitement and complexity, Empire of the Sun is a little more laid back in their approach. Strong bass but lazy vocals keep it a step back from your typical dance tunes.

Honestly, without reservation, as far as acoustic, high-pitched, threadbare folk goes - this is the best new song i've heard all year.

cokemachineglow Review: Glasvegas was handpicked to open Echo & the Bunnymen’s recent New York City performance of Ocean Rain (1984). Presumably this was because the frontmen of both bands fashion themselves as cooler-than-thou motherfuckers with a predilection towards wearing sunglasses indoors, but also because Glasvegas are NME’s new IT Band, riding a furious wave of British hype unseen since, uh, Arctic Monkeys? Kasabian? Starsailor? Take your pick.
Most often described as “fuzz-pop” and sporting a moniker suggesting equal amounts nu-metal and electroclash, yours truly showed up early for the Bunnymen gig in hopes that Glasvegas would supply some dirty, Jesus & Mary Chain-style hedonism. Instead, Echo fans got a quartet of particularly yelpy pups armed with the singular idea of re-casting Doves’ “The Cedar Room” in as many keys as possible.
And that describes “Geraldine” in a nutshell, a teary-eyed knock-off from a band that desperately wants to be thought of as “important.” Loud and strident while utterly devoid of substance, “Geraldine” is exactly the type of Brit-pop smash that, like Starsailor’s “Good Souls” or JJ72’s “Oxygen,” sends the music tabloids into a tizzy lasting just long enough for the ill-fated sophomore record to slip in and drop. Everything is in its proper place: the guitarist plays two swelling chords over a rudimentary march while lead vocalist James Allan alternately coos and spits out hiccupy (and likely auto-tuned) verses like, “I will be that angel on your shoulder / My name is Geraldine / I’m your social worker!” (she’s got an MSW?). “Geraldine” is hardly subtle, sounds like a dozen better bands, and is extremely British; I’d probably have loved it eight years ago, but now I just don’t give a shit.

Jeezy kicks off the song with ho-hum boasts about being his city's rap ambassador. When a break beat finally sets up Kanye's robo-voice entrance, you're almost thankful to get a break from Jeezy's monotonous chops. Ye's verse packs just enough wit to keep you hooked, but doesn't venture any further.
