I have way too many new titles to mention, so to just keep things simple for the time being, I stumbled across the original seven minute video for "Stars", the 1985 charity single by Hear N Aid...complete with the awesome, wankerific extended solo. I hadn't seen it in 16 or 17 years...great fun. Good song, too:

Hear N Aid - "Stars" (video)

YouTube is loaded with tons of metal goodies...

Sun Kil Moon - Among The Leaves

http://www.caldoverderecords.com/

QUOTE

mong The Leaves is the 5th full length album by Mark Kozelek under the Sun Kil Moon moniker. Played almost entirely on nylon string guitar, this 17-song all original album was recorded between October 2011 and January 2012 in San Francisco. Among The Leaves - words which caught Mark’s attention from a John Connolly novel - finds Mark relaxed, singing playfully about his life as a musician while retaining the melancholic spirit of his 20 year catalog. Mark’s love for San Francisco and Northern California are at the heart of this new album. “My first album (Down Colorful Hill) was released in 1992” says Kozelek, “but creatively, I feel like I’m just beginning. The new album was written and recorded impulsively, without second guessing. I didn’t have that kind of confidence in the past.” Unlike Red House Painters’ epic Rollercoaster, described by Rolling Stone as “the slowest and mopiest self revelations ever put to tape” or Sun Kil Moon’s Ghosts of the Great Highway, which Billboard Magazine called “heartbreaking,” Among The Leaves displays a more raw and humorous side of Mark’s songwriting. Aaron Prellwitz, recording engineer of Red House Painters and all 5 Sun Kil Moon albums describes the latest effort as “wonderfully direct." Kozelek curiously ties together legends Joe Frazier, Bobby Fischer and Ed Gein in ‘The Winery’, ‘‘Song for Richard Collopy’ is a touching tribute to the late San Francisco guitar repairman, and ‘Sunshine In Chicago’ – written just before taking the stage at a Chicago venue last year – is a funny, self deprecating poke at life on the road. Though Among The Leaves is mostly in the solo, nylon string style of Admiral Fell Promises, a new ensemble of players joined Mark for a portion of the record, recalling the same spirit as April and Tiny Cities, but with a fresh, new sound. The album will be released on CD, vinyl, and digitally, with bonus tracks to be announced. More information soon at www.caldoverderecords.com

TRACK LISTING:
1.
Well, after several years of Mitchell trying to do this, I figured I would try my hat.
Field Music - Measure

kind of surprised I haven't seen a thread on this yet. Maybe one exists.. oh well.

anyway, it leaked a few days ago or so, and I've been listening to it nonstop ever since, just about. the only Field Music related stuff I'd heard prior was that The Week That Was album in 2008, which was pretty cool, but I never could really embrace it. I think Mitchell was a pretty big fan. This, though, has me by the balls right now. 70-minute cycle of endlessly fascinating guitar pop. I think the most remarkable thing is the restraint displayed throughout--first listen I kept wanting everything to just explode into some huge exploratory guitar jam, but it never happens, and as a result there's a remarkable tension and tautness to everything. And even still, despite everything sounding so thought-out and put-together, each song still bursts with color and life.

anyway, people ought to be listening to this.

Actress - R.I.P

So is this the indie rockist approved electronic record of 2012? Looking that way. I just span it for the first time and it's pretty good.

Not as good as all the hyperbole suggests, just pretty good. More of the ambient than dance side of electronics, a lot of it is fairly minimal (certainly with minimal structure to most songs), there aren't really any true bangers (save for maybe stuff like 'Shadow') or overly emotional songs or vocal tracks. So it's mostly just there; nice enough, pleasant enough, doesn't really grab. I'l' definitely give it a few weeks though to seep into me like these records often do, it's a ridiculously easy listen so I can see myself reaching for it quite a bit.

RA and Fact have both give it nearly perfect scores. Liffey has declared it AOTY. Monotony believes 'Jardin' is one of the most 'bizarrely beautiful' songs he's ever heard (this double adjective criticism need to stop; if I hear the prepositions 'weirdly' amazing or 'strangely' indifferent or 'bizarrely' something again I'll fucking go crazy). And I don't give a fuck of 'double adjective' or 'prepositions' were used in correct grammatical concept here. Grammar evolves, and I just evolved it.

Anyone digging on this record?
