i have been spinning these three records all week in my car and it just makes me realize that it was all downhill from here... Michael Stipe is an asshole and half the man he used to be. Peter buck has become a drunk and Mike Mills wears funny clothes now. i love the BIG DRUM REM records. all this "return to form" talk lately makes me sick. you can't even come close to these records these days...

as soon as Stipe decided it was okay to lip-synch in videos and sing about "love" my heart sank a bit... don't get me wrong, i love certain moments of "Out Of Time" "Automatic" and "New Adventures" but this band has become total shit. early REM is a whole different beast. i may actually love "Reckoning" and "Murmur" more than anything they have done, but these mid-period REM records gave me something to believe in. maybe good could conquer evil, maybe my community could be a better place, or maybe i wasn't such a weirdo after all. fuck you, Mr. Stipe.

Murmur to Automatic For The People is a fucking amazing run. After that, it's one big freefall.
The Who, the Clash, R.E.M....they all should've stopped as soon as Keith, Topper and Bill left the band.

i mean, i dunno, i sorta agree w/ this thread. there's no denying that this band's peak was nearly 25 years ago (although i for one think AFTP is their best record), but i'm also really glad they're still around.
sister hell also forgot to mention that chronic town is a 10.7

Automatic For the People? yes, it has some amazing moments through out the record... but it is still so soft. they lost something after that director Tarsem or whatever got a hold of them. fuck "Sidewinder Sleeps" and shit like that... give me "Just A Touch" or "Exhuming McCarthy" any day over that gay ass coffee commercial bull-dick.

As soon as a band starts trying to "reclaim a former glory", they're pretty much finished. REM will never be the band they once were.
--------------------
Few beings have ever been so impregnated, pierced to the core, by the conviction of the absolute futility of human aspiration. The universe is nothing but a furtive arrangement of elementary particles. A figure in transition toward chaos. That is what will finally prevail. The human race will disappear. Other races in turn will appear and disappear. And human actions are as free and as stripped of meaning as the unfettered movements of the elementary particles. Good, evil, morality, sentiments? Pure ‘Victorian fictions.’ All that exists is egotism. Cold, intact, and radiant.
Michel Houellebecq.
"Sometimes, after they'd done the shopping, they would stop, each with his or her cart, in front of a bookstore that carried the paperback edition of his book. His wife would point to it and say: you're still there. Invariably, he would nod and then they would continue browsing the mall stores. Did he know her or didn't he? He knew her, of course he did, it was just that sometimes reality, the same little reality that served to anchor reality, seemed to fade around the edges, as if the passage of time had a porous effect on things, and blurred and made more insubstantial what was itself already, by its very nature, insubstantial and satisfactory and real."
Roberto Bolaño, 2666.

i just wish they were still weird, vague, abstract and arty...
something about this band is VERY American sounding to me on the three records i posted in the first post. they were part of my idea of what the American "fabric" could be... they gave me hope.

granted, i probably perfer and listen to CT->LRP more than i do AFTP, but start to finish and as a cohesive unit, i think it's their best. however pretty much all those other records in that stretch come damn close. amazing band.

i know the AMERICAN sound that you're hearing in their later records, but i also think it was totally present in the first 4 releases while they were being weird, vague, abstract and arty...
