Please help me out and settle a very, very spirited argument between me and some others.
If no, theorize why: Is the flute perhaps the lamest of all instruments?
If yes, please cite examples.
I know of one "indie" song with a flute but figured SOMB was a good resource for others.

The Carpenters-'Masquerade' is 70's but it's so good I can't pass up the opportunity to post about it. They definitely got their flute on. http://youtube.com/watch?v=t90jmRIvz2c

It's still used in some prog and symphonic rock/metal. Whether you would think its use is lame probably depends on what you think of the music itself. And on this particular board, I'd guess you guys would tend to vote "lame."

yes, it can exist. when used at the wrong time/place it can definately be lame, but it can work in certain places.
off the top of my head... belle & sebastian's songs "we rule the school", "chickfactor", "the boy with the arab strap" and "the model" brian jonestown massacre's "servo" the left banke's "walk away renee" several nick drake songs several isobel campbell/gentle waves songs
also... the mellotron flute sound is VERY hip. "strawberry fields forever" is the best example.

QUOTE(strummy @ May 23 2007, 01:40 PM) when used at the wrong time/place it can definately be lame i.e. most Carpenter's songs. But that's part of the charm.

"piper" by ghost uses a flute-like instument. also, the intro to that song reminds me of something off the Chrono Cross soundtrack...

Cello>flute, but flute is OK when used properly (as cited above, and also in the Moody Blues' Days Of Future Passed(forgot which track specifically). the OBOE, however (cf. The Carpenters again ...)

Aggy's right, Oboe is easily the most badass woodwind.
Non- serious serious debate: piccolo vs flute.

Non- serious serious debate: piccolo vs flute. Um, I was going for oboe as a NOT COOL instrument, in rock at least. (jeez, we haven't been in the same mindset since that Akon thread ) Piccolo kicks ass over the flute when it comes to John Philip Sousa's "Stars And Stripes Forever"..but not in much else.

Eric Dolphy was a kick-ass flutist, as was Joe Farrell; the both of them being jazz guys though. In terms of rock, a lot of progressive bands used the flute, including Gentle Giant & Focus., and of course, Jethro Tull.

Alright, my friends. It's time for another solid little rock jam Damo Suzuki: So, um, yeah. Getting older isn't as bad as it sounds. Better than being young & poor (DjDrake) or young & slutty (SG) or young, poor and slutty (Paves); am I right?
