RHINO TAKES CONTROL OF JOY DIVISION'S LEGACY

With a Film about Joy Division Singer Ian Curtis Due This Fall,
Rhino Revisits the Band's Catalog for Expanded Editions of Three Essential
Albums, a Special Vinyl Boxed Set and Ringtones, Plus the Film's
Soundtrack, Which Contains Unreleased Music by The Killers and New Order

The Reissues, Soundtrack and Ringtones Will Be Available October 30

The Vinyl Box Will Be Available Exclusively from Rhino September 11

LOS ANGELES -- Joy Division recorded two albums before singer Ian Curtis
tragically took his own life in 1980. But what the Manchester quartet
lacked in longevity, they more than made up for with the quality, achieving
a greater impact with those two groundbreaking recordings than most bands
could ever hope to achieve. To celebrate Joy Division's formation 30 years
ago, Rhino Records spotlights the band this fall with a number of projects,
including expanded reissues of the group's essential releases, a special
vinyl boxed set, the soundtrack to an upcoming film about Curtis and
ringtones.

Offered exclusively at Rhino.com, the JOY DIVISION VINYL BOX will be
available September 11 for a suggested list price of $199.98. The boxed set
contains 180-gram vinyl editions of UNKNOWN PLEASURES, CLOSER and STILL
that will also be available individually on September 18 at all retail
outlets.

Rhino will also reissue double-CD, collector's editions of those albums
expanded with rare and unreleased music. The first disc of each set
features the original album remastered, while the second disc contains
unreleased live performances. The deluxe editions of UNKNOWN PLEASURES,
CLOSER and STILL will be available at physical and digital retailers
October 30 for a suggested list price of $24.98 each.

All together, the trio of reissues offers fans nearly three hours of
previously unavailable music. UNKNOWN PLEASURES captures the band in
Manchester at The Factory playing "Dead Souls," "Shadowplay" and more.
CLOSER contains Joy Division's concert at the University of London, which
included performance of "Digital," "Twenty Four Hours" and "Glass." STILL
features the group soundchecking and performing "Isolation," "The Eternal"
and "Love Will Tear Us Apart" at High Wycombe.

More Joy Division is on tap for October 30 as Rhino releases the soundtrack
for CONTROL, a film that centers on the band's enigmatic lead singer and
marks the feature film directorial debut of acclaimed photographer Anton
Corbijn. Distributed by The Weinstein Company, the film will screen at The
Toronto Film Festival in early September and The Swerve Festival in Los
Angeles in late September. It will begin a limited release October 10. Like
the film, the soundtrack features music by Joy Division alongside music
from artists of the era, including David Bowie, The Buzzcocks, Roxy Music,
Iggy Pop and Velvet Underground. The set also contains previously
unreleased music including parts of New Order's score for the film, as well
as a recording of "Shadowplay" by The Killers. The actors, who learned how
to play instruments to portray the band, contribute an additional
unreleased song with their version of "Transmission."

The Joy Division celebration continues as Rhino Mobile offers a pair of
custom ringtones featuring the songs "Love Will Tear Us Apart Again" and
"Transmission." Both ringtones will be available through all mobile
carriers.

Buerger in the Rhino Records' Media Relations Department at (818) 238-6248

200 bucks for THREE 180 gram vinyl LP's? Weird.

Yeah, I'm pretty disappointed in the vinyl's price, but the expanded CDs look worthwhile at least.

And ... whoah. Just saw that The Killers are covering "Shadowplay" for the soundtrack. Can't say that looks too promising.

no vocals on the new new order tracks so maybe it'll be pretty cool.

My main problem with a lot of 00s New Order has been Barney's transformation from one of the coolest, geekiest lyricists of all time to just plain painful.

I've already heard the Killer's "Shadowplay" do yourself a favour, don't listen.

These were meant to be out yesterday here but have been pushed back to next Monday.

if someone buys the cds, please, comment on the sound quality?

i'm curious what they're gonna remaster there, cos i though those joy division and new order cds were remastered for the boxsets that came out some time ago. i have individual albums on cds, and i think the sound is fine. they definitely do not sound like those 80s tom waits cds or "murmur".

edit: if i understood correctly, they aren't remastering the albums. they just reissue the remasters with a second disc, right?

RHINO DELIVERS A BUNDLE OF JOY DIVISION

Best-of Collection Spotlights 14 Album Tracks, Singles and Live Recordings Spanning the Groundbreaking Quartet's Iconic Career

The Best of Joy Division Available from Rhino Records April 29

Joy Division Reissues and Control Soundtrack Are Available Now

LOS ANGELES -- Rhino celebrated Joy Division's 30-year anniversary last year, reissuing expanded Collector's Editions of the influential Manchester quartet's essential recordings. This year, Rhino extends the celebration with a single-disc collection that distills the essence of the band's signature mix of shadow and beauty. THE BEST OF JOY DIVISION will be available April 29 at physical and digital retailers, including www.rhino.com, for a suggested list price of $11.98 for the physical and
$9.99 for the digital.

THE BEST OF JOY DIVISION mixes 14 album tracks, singles and live recordings that span the short yet significant career of this iconic U.K. post-punk band. Fittingly, the album opens with "Digital," an early song that appeared in 1979 on A Factory Sampler, a seven-inch released by Tony Wilson, the founder of Factory Records and one of the band's biggest supporters.

THE BEST OF JOY DIVISION also offers several tracks from the group's only two studio albums, Unknown Pleasures (1979) -- #157 on Rolling Stone's "500 Greatest Album of All Time" -- and Closer (1980). Featured songs include "Disorder," "She's Lost Control," "Heart And Soul" and "Isolation." The collection also spotlights Joy Division's legacy as live performers and a singles band with the inclusion of "24 Hours" -- recorded live on John Peel's BBC show -- and the singles "Transmission" and "Atmosphere," the latter climbing to #34 when it was reissued in 1988. An album of the band's best would be incomplete without "Love Will Tear Us Apart Again." Following Curtis' death, the dark and elegant song became Joy Division's signature track, reaching #13 in Britain after its re-release.

Last fall, Rhino reissued double-CD, Collector's Editions of UNKNOWN PLEASURES, CLOSER and STILL expanded with rare and unreleased music. The first disc of each set features the original album remastered, while the second disc contains unreleased live performances. All together, the trio of reissues offers fans nearly three hours of previously unavailable music.

Also currently available from Rhino is the soundtrack for CONTROL, an award-winning biopic that profiles Joy Division's enigmatic lead singer.
Winner of nine film festival awards, including three at the Cannes Film Festival, the film was directed by acclaimed music photographer Anton Corbijn and loosely based on Curtis' wife's book, Touching From A Distance.

Like the film, the soundtrack features music by Joy Division alongside music from artists of the era, including David Bowie, The Buzzcocks, Roxy Music, Iggy Pop and Velvet Underground. The set also contains previously unreleased music, including parts of New Order's score for the film, as well as a recording of "Shadowplay" by The Killers. The actors, who learned how to play instruments to portray the band, contribute an additional unreleased song with their version of "Transmission."

In June, The Miriam Collection from Genius Products and The Weinstein Company will release a pair of Joy Division DVDs. The first, CONTROL, will be released June 3 and the second, a documentary titled JOY DIVISION, will be available June 17 for a suggested retail price of $22.95.

CONTROL stars two-time Academy AwardŽ nominee Samantha Morton (In America, Minority Report), Alexandra Maria Lara (Downfall) and relative newcomer Sam Riley (24 Hour Party People). Filmed in color and transferred to black-and-white for a surreal and edgy vibe, the film has been hailed as "the most acclaimed brit-pic of the year" (Variety) and "a handsome, lyrically moving drama" (The Times).

The retrospective documentary JOY DIVISION, directed by music-video veteran Grant Gee, chronicles the band's progression, as well as social and external conditions that influenced them. Blending archival footage and revealing testimonies from band members and key musical players, JOY DIVISION gives an inside look at everything surrounding the rock scene of the 1970's. Originally premiering at the Toronto Film Festival, JOY DIVISION covers the group's early days as the band Warsaw, its post-punk glory as Joy Division, and the untimely death of its lead singer Curtis.

For additional information regarding Joy Division, please contact Christoph Buerger in the Rhino Records' Media Relations Department at (818) 238-6248 or christoph.buerger@wmg.com.
