QUOTE(Hewletts Daughter @ Jan 8 2008, 04:11 PM)
"After much thought into this, I have finally come to a conclusion as to why the ‘Meet the Spartans’ commercial is so funny:

It is an interesting choice to have Sanjaya sing ‘I’m not gay,’ as his final words on earth. As he is plummeting into a seemingly bottomless pit, he does not say ‘dear god no,’ ‘I love you mom,’ or even simply ‘argh.’ He instead takes the moment to reaffirm to the world, in spite of their doubts, that he is not a homosexual. Not only that, but he continues to sing, despite falling to his certain death. The distinct lack of plausibility of this situation is what produces giggles from our mouth. It is the antithesis to the belief that ‘it’s funny because it is true.’

That quote was from today, otherwise I wouldn't have bothered(hint, hint).

Aaaaaaanyway...

Legit thread. I've liked 2008 so far. Genghis Tron, Boris, Black Mountain, Foals, Sunset, Barry Lynn, Constantines, Fuck Buttons, Portishead (although I crave a better version of it) all being very good indeed. Black Mountain and Foals are the standout SOMB type albums, although I think that Sunset has huge appeal for this forum (see NewGrass's thread for link). It reminds me a bit of last years Menomena which is a good thing.

I'd really like to hear a proper rip of that Portishead. As of now I don't want to listen to it again at that sound quality. When's that scheduled to officially drop?

The Sunset didn't do it for me, but I'm going to give it another shot.

Yeah you should give Sunset another shot. It wouldn't be something that would hit you straight off after one listen. As with most things I guess.

Have only listened to three albums this year, but I dig all three

Goldfrapp - Seventh Tree: Confession: I wasn't that crazy about Goldfrapp until this album. So basically, take the average SOMB sentiment and flip it over. Many will hate this, but I dug the lushness of it.

The Mountain Goats - Heretic Pride: I've listened to this more than any other 2K8 release, which is as much a product of it being the only album on my hard drive currently, as much as anything else. Which isn't to say it's not good, I really like "Autoclave".

Lykke Li - Youth Novels: Awesome pop album. Really catchy and sublimely sexy. I need a physical copy of this.

QUOTE (Ogawa)
I read some article or review where they quoted a young unnamed writer/director who, after the screening of the film, said, "What do we do now?" What an asshole. Write a good screenplay and cast some good actors. Fuck you, make a film without hundreds of millions of dollars. Show a modicum of invention with limited resources. Lots of other people seem capable of doing it.

QUOTE
I have a dream most nights. It starts on a playground. There's kids swinging, laughing; dogs barking; butterflies just flapping their little wings. And then you hear a rumbling, and over the horizon comes a black cloud and it's made of cancer and pus. And it starts sweeping over the playground and everyone starts screaming and clawing their eyes and pulling at their hair, and saying "Help! What do we do?" And you know what happens next? Out steps me wielding the biggest fucking shotgun you''ve ever seen in your whole life. And you know whay I do? I blow every fucking thing away. And I am getting God's work done. When it's all over and the dust has settled, the whole world gathers below me and they say, "Thank you, Ronnie, thank you for helping, being a great mean and doing this for us." And you know what I say? "You don't need to thank me. I'm just a guy with a gun. I'm just a cop.

i've actually heard that badu is outstanding, which is really surprising to me as i've always found her kind of a so-so artist. i'd love a trout if you've got one monty wink.gif

It's very possible that the reduction in live rock quality could be directly tied to female hormones being flushed into our water system, and then young males drinking that water.

for the record i believe i my favorite record of 2008 thus far is throw me the statue's moonbeams, but sun kil moon's april could easily trounce that based on my previous love for most things kozelek and the two tracks i've heard thus far.
