Is there a more perfect love song than Willie Nelson's 'Always On My Mind'?

The sparse, tinkling piano keys. Willie's nasal voice. His perfect hesitant delivery. The lyrics. Oh, the lyrics!

"If I made you feel second best
Girl I'm sorry I was blind"

or

"Little things I should have said and done
I just never took the time"

or when it builds up to the

"Tell me,
Tell me that your sweet love hasn't died"

Perfect, I dare say. Perfect.

Pale Blue Eyes

Sometimes I feel so happy
Sometimes I feel so sad
Sometime I feel so happy
But mostly you just make me mad.
Baby you just make me mad.
Linger on
Your pale blue eyes.

Naive Medely

I'm just an animal looking for a home
To share the same space for a minute or two
You'll love me til my heart stops
You'll love me till I'm dead
Eyes that light up
Eyes that look through you
Cover up the blank spots
Hit me on the head
awooo ooooooooo

edit: I mean, there are a million great love songs, but these two are perfect.

I prefer the Pet Shop Boys' cover. Although their cover of the Madness track 'My Girl' last month was even more stunning, and one of the best tracks in their catalogue.

Elvis did the definitive version in '72, helped in no small part by the sad shape he was in when he recorded it, I believe.

I have the original 45 somewhere, haven't played it in a while so maybe I'm remembering this wrong but I'm pretty sure it slays Willie's cover. I seem to recall the Jordanaires (?) on backing vocals, which makes it even more awesome.

I would vote for Paul McCartney's "Everyday" from his first solo LP, McCartney, as one of the most beautiful love songs in pop music. I much prefer his singing voice to Nelson's.

I'd pick "Crazy" over "Always On My Mind." A little less maudlin.

Willie singing any love song is like someone's ancient grandpa, or Burl Ives, singing you a love song. It's just not right.

If you're talking Wings, nothing beats:

That chorus says it all.

"Drifting" by Hendrix is a good love song. "A Case of You" by Joni Mitchell is too.

I was always keen on Paul Simon's Kathy's Song. What I particularly like about the song is he never actually says the word "love."

Here, There, And Everywhere by The Beatles is another very nice love song. McCartney's Calico Skies From Flaming Pie is another one of my favorites.

I prefer all of these over Nelson's 'Always on my Mind.'

I'd go with Little Wing by JHE. It's literally a perfect song.

Varying degrees of perfect... I'm not gonna argue with the OP. Amazing song. Great songs all over this thread.

I'll nominate this little gem though: I Hear You Calling Me by Jonathan Richman (sorry, youtube failed but I'll upload if anybody wants to hear). One of many Richman love songs that have completely destroyed me (that summer feeling, you're the one are two that come to mind also).
