EARLOVE HI-FI EARPLUGS REDUCE OVERALL NOISE LEVEL WITHOUT COMPROMISING SOUND FIDELITY

Chicago, IL – January 4, 2010. The sound level at most concerts and clubs far exceeds safe exposure levels for bare ears. The volume at a nightclub, for example, is usually around 105 decibels, which is louder than being in close proximity to a running chainsaw. Repeated exposure to unsafe decibel levels can lead to permanent hearing loss and has been linked to Tinnitus, a persistent noise or ringing in the ears. Earlove provides a low cost, one-size-fits-most earplug that can be used in a variety of noisy environments.

While most concert venues sell foam plugs, which lower the volume, Earlove allows you to hear the music clearly—with no distortion or muffling—but at a safe level. Earlove uses the same patented technology as Musicians Earplugs™ for only a fraction of the cost.

Carolynn Travis, a Chicago-based DJ and tour manager for the long-running rock & soul outfit Poi Dog Pondering, created Earlove in 2003. Travis, who is legally deaf and suffers from Tinnitus, began seeing audiologist Gail Gudmundsen after learning that she had significant hearing loss in 1994. Gudmundsen’s husband, Dr. Mead Killion, founded Etymotic Research, the company responsible for developing the type of earplug that Earlove sells through its Website and at the popular Chicago venue Schuba’s.

When used correctly, Earlove Hi-Fi earplugs reduce the overall sound 20 decibels evenly across all frequencies. Speech and music stay clear, just quieter, like turning down the volume.

I’ve used [Earlove Hi-Fi earplugs] in a small rock club in Chicago while hearing the bombastic Secret Machines as well as in a huge arena during Madonna’s tour last summer. At both shows, Earlove worked perfectly – and tremendously better than the foam kind. ". –Ari Bendersky, Cool Hunting

Earlove use the same technology and offer the same protection. Earlove may cost a few bucks more, but come with a carry case and chain so that you can clip them to your bag or belt so that you have them at all times. I first heard about Chicago-based Earlove on Sound Opinions.

ETYMOTIC RESEARCH, INC.
61 Martin Lane
Elk Grove Village, IL 60007

Etymotic Research, Inc. is an engineering-driven research, development and manufacturing company. The name "Etymotic" (pronounced "et-im-oh-tik.") means "true to the ear." Mead Killion, Ph.D. founded Etymotic Research in 1983 to design products that accurately assess hearing, improve the lives of those with hearing loss, protect hearing, and enhance the listening experience of musicians and music lovers everywhere.

With deep roots in acoustic research and the hearing aid industry, Etymotic invented insert earphones in 1984. Etymotic’s original earphone design used balanced armature receivers, which established these speakers as the gold standard for high definition in-ear earphones. The first versions were used for diagnostic testing and precision auditory research (ER-1, 2, 3). Etymotic produced the first noise-isolating high-fidelity in-ear earphone, the ER-4 (1991), which became the basis of all subsequent in-ear earphones and in-ear monitors worldwide, and created an entire category of consumer electronics. The ER-4 earphones are still produced and channel-balanced to within 1 dB in Etymotic’s labs in the US.

Innovation, education and hearing conservation are central to Etymotic’s mission. Etymotic’s products are used by scientists, hearing practitioners, hearing-impaired consumers, professional and amateur musicians, and others who insist on superior sound quality. Audio engineers, audiologists and musicians working together have generated over 100 patents issued and pending. A number of Etymotic’s 60 employees are accomplished musicians. Etymotic Research is located in Elk Grove Village, Illinois.

Yes, it seems a shameless plug, but it is something to be considered....especially those of us with 200+ (easily) unplugged shows.

Fuck this. What do I need to listen to when I am in my 70s anyway...?

--------------------
I saw Girls play at Monster Island in June. The basement venue was packed beyond capacity, with the cops on the corner all night, threatening to break up the show. Seeing Girls live is like something out of a David Lynch movie: their songs are nostalgic for the "Earth Angel" days of Doo-Wop, but the sound is heavy, a little gritty, and awash in the seductive blue glow of pharmaceutical downers. Christopher has that whole Kurt Cobain/young Macaulay Culkin thing going on. In a really, really good way.

yes. i used to use the standard foam earplugs that a lot of venues keep behind the bar for $1. the etymotic earplugs are far more effective. almost everything is heard much clearer, though they're still not perfect. plus, i have tinnitus anyway and they've pretty much kept that stagnant. two friends only wear their earplugs to shows that they know will be excessively loud (dinosaur jr, black rebel motorcycle club, etc.), but i wear mine to every show and my ears are no worse than 6-7 years ago.

i keep them on a bookshelf in my living room and now instinctually add them to my keychain before going to shows.
