What are the most unbalanced albums you can think of? I'd go with Marquee Moon - the first half is outstanding, while the second half is just boring as hell. I'd also put Gimme Fiction in this category. Not quite as extreme as MM, but one of the more front loaded albums I've listened to.

I can't think of any instances of an album in which the first half sucked and the second half was great. No band is that bad at sequencing, I guess.

Not really. And 13th Floor is commercial, watered down west coast hippie bullshit which sadly inflicted most American rock acts at the time.

joshua tree is probably the best answer thus far in this thread, but there are some side B gems there.

GF is not unevenly loaded IMO, but this may be more due to the fact that i find it a merely a "good, not quite great" album, so it sorta seems irrelevant in this discussion.

MM is totally off the mark in my book. guiding light is gorgeous, elevation is jerky greatness (as good as see no evil) and torn curtain is one of the best tunes on the album (some days i might say its the best tune on it). very well balanced.

great thread though, keep it going. i'll add suggestions as i think of em.

k, got one that's not quite perfect either but i think crooked rain, crooked rain is a unfairly front loaded record (although gold soundz and range life kinda thwart that argument).

It's very possible that the reduction in live rock quality could be directly tied to female hormones being flushed into our water system, and then young males drinking that water.

I'd be interested to see the tracklisting for the vinyl of the new Dream album.

Disco Compacto:
1. Love King
2 Make Up Bag [ft. T.I.]
3 F.I.L.A.
4 Sex Intelligent
5 Sex Intelligent (Remix)
6 Yamaha
7 Nikki Part 2
8 Abyss
9 Panties to the Side
10 Turnt Out
11 February Love
12 Florida University

If Yamaha kicks off side 2, as I'd expect, it's a pretty decent candidate for this thread IMO. Even though everybody seems to hate Panties to the Side more than I do.

First thing coming to mind for a bad first side and good second is Talking Heads' Little Creatures. Which doesn't really work - the first side isn't as consistently infectious and engaging as side two, but it's a long way from being really bad.

Bowie's Let's Dance is a good contender for the first category. All the great singles are on Side One; only the remake of "Cat People" distinguishes Side Two.

The Wild, The Innocent and the E Street Shuffle is an album with a decent Side A and a perfect Side B. Not sure if that fits your criteria, but it's certainly back loaded.

^nope to Ten.

fillmore jive is not one of my favorite pavement tunes and i'll admit CR,CR is probably my least fav. pavement release (either that or TT), so i'm a bit biased re: the unbalanced comment as well.

Scott Walker - Til the Band Comes in

I remember Jarvis Cocker joking on this one. It's been a while, but side one slays pretty damn hard.

Ummm...sorry. I meant that Joshua Tree is backloaded, not front loaded. I actually hate the first three tracks. If Running To Stand Still was on Side B, it might be the most backloaded album ever.

ah. fair. i figured the standard answer would prefer side A but side B has its moments too. that said, i think its still solidly dwarfed by side A, but to each their own.

Interesting. Does the incessant 20+ years of radio-play to do with that, or are we talking about the songs on their own merits? The "I've just heard these songs too much" argument is about the only thing I could see in not liking those tracks.
