I don't wanna type everything back up. but if you guys could repost your lists and people need to vote etc, do so.

At least 5, no more than 50. List as many as you'd like though.

VOTING WILL CONTINUE TO THE END OF FEBRUARY.

Fine. Whatever Polls closed. Last Exit To Springfield wins, Lisa's Substitute came in a close second. Congartulations.

I'm down to 84 episodes is the limit still 100? Surely if we are voting for a third of all episodes we might as well rank them all? I'd be happy to 50 or 75.

Just a suggestion.
without_opinion
my official list:

1. the softball episode.

done.

i haven't exceeded your limit, bacteria-infested encased-meat tube.
Undercooked Sausage
I need at least 5 btw.
birdistheword
I was thinking about posting a list. Good thing I waited. Or is the poll really closed?
Undercooked Sausage
No it's open, that was me being sarcastic because Andrew is a loser with little girly legs.
Sam
I demand a recount. I believe the Season 11 classic The Mansion Family was tops on most people's lists.
birdistheword
Where's the best place to get episode titles and a brief synopsis? Nothing too intricate, I don't want to flip through page after page of movie references, trivia, etc.

Some of those links that people provided would help a lot.
Mr. Sinistro
The Frank Gehry episode where a skateboarder rides up on the building and says "Frank Gehry, I love your curvilinear forms."

The old old episode where Lisa runs away and Marge pulls up along the road where Lisa is playing sax with a man, and Marge says "Lisa! Get away from that jazz man!"

Undercooked Sausage
Can a mod please pin this.

Raj (Noble Con)
Future-Drama? I Am Furious Yellow? Wow, those are... definitely Simpsons episodes.

(BTW I'd like to repeat my suggestion that all lists should be limited to 50 rather than 100, which is much too high for a total poll of 350+)
Mitchell
As I said those aren't definitely in but they are up for consideration.

'Future-drama' and 'I am Furious Yellow' are of the few episodes of late that seem to actually make me laugh out loud. While the stories now seem to be much better than those from 2001/2 they aren't always matched up with the witty lines related to the premise. These two do and if they make my list i'll stand by them.
Raj (Noble Con)
I suppose "I Am Furiously Yellow" is passably mediocre with perhaps one or two good jokes, but the only good things I can say about "Future-Drama" is that it has a New Order song and it looks good compared to "Bart to the Future." Otherwise it's pretty awful.
Mitchell
Nah "Future-drama" has more smart liners than any episode in that season due to the writers being able to play with the form due to the setting of the episode. Like an updated "Lisa's Wedding" as compared to the not very good "Bart to the Future" that you mention.
birdistheword
The best 'latter day' Simpsons I can think of is the tomacco episode.
beansimpson
Man, I am making this list too much of an investment. You said late feb, correct?
beansimpson
I actually have a formal question. Do Treehouse of Horrors count?

now that this is a new board with new rules, "who shot mr. burns", clearly, should be counted as 1 episode.

if you don't... you may crash the board again....
Mitchell
44 mins = 2 Episodes, screened months apart. Logic is not on your side.
birdistheword
I think it should be one episode. It may have screen months apart, but I think both were written about the same time and designed as an hour-long story split with a cliffhanger.
Undercooked Sausage
There will only be a couple people posting 100 lists anyway it seems.

and no, Who Shot Mr. Burns? is two episodes. It's listed as two episodes on any episode guide ever made, they're not aired back to back, and they've never been shown together as a 44 minute episode.

It's like saying Back To The Future 1, 2, and 3 are one movie.
Raj (Noble Con)
WSMB is, by its very nature, two episodes. It would clutz up the entire poll if you counted it otherwise.

Yeah but this is never good logic for allowing something - in fact its all the more reason to limit it. Otherwise you're just diluting the poll with unnecessary votes from a few people.

I can't think of a single "smart liner" from "Bart to the Future." Just dumb laziness.
birdistheword
So which is the better part? Part 1 or 2? I may be partial to 2. That rickets gag cracks me up.

i def. think #2 is betrter, if we must seperate the two. which... whatever. i'm going to place a formal complaint with the commitee.

Sorry to go off on a tangent here, but has anyone seen MacHomer? It is playing here in Berkeley for the next few days and I'm trying to decide whether to attend or not.

That's nice. I'm sorry the concept of a "to be continued" episode is completely lost on you. I'll make sure to notify Matt Groening that there is one less episode to be counted on the episode list.

I might listen to you because of your Strider avatar if nothing else.
Mitchell
Why mention "Bart To The Future?" It's "Future-Drama" I had on my short list.

On one hand I agree with Raj that 100 from 360 is too much and is dangerously close to ranking every episode. On the other hand I discusse this with tGDB and we both agree that saying there are only 50 episodes worth voting for is crazy talk. I'm voting for 60.

BTW the only smart line form BttF is "That's Crazy Talk"

Bah, I have to re-do my list again.

Yeah, mistake, I meant F-D. Neither is funny. It's just absurdity for absurdity's sake. Wiggum has rotissiere chicken in his stomach? Why, oh no reason, just a big middle finger to the viewers who still bother to watch the show.

"That's crazy talk" isn't really funny, it's just another example of the one dimensional punning they do to fill up time in later seasons. I would actually argue that "Smell you later. Smell you later forever" is the only line from that episode that I remember with any value.

There are certainly more than 50 worth voting for - but obviously there are more than 100 albums worth voting for in an all-time poll and we still limit that. 50 out of... 360 or 370 or whatever it is now is still a pretty huge number, more than 1/8 of the total voting pool, which far exceeds any other poll options we've done.

I'm just saying - far, far fewer choices for this than any other poll done on this board. Hence, there should be fewer votes allowed. I would actually think top 20s would be more sensible, but I'm fine with 50.
Undercooked Sausage
Fine, you've made good points. Limit is set to 50. but people are allowed to list as many as they'd like. Only 50 will be counted.

We both agree that BttF isn't very good so I'll continue on to "Future-Drama". I found that episode to be one of the more interesting story premises from season 16 before you see the episode. As opposed to an episode like "Pranksta Rap" which is bad even from the shows synopsis or "There's Something About Marrying" which wasn't anywhere near as good as it should have been.

I also re-watched "Future-Drama" last night and noted down the lines that made me laugh.

- "No one's gay for Moleman."
- "Hey, I'm not the clone! You're the clone!"
"Oh please, not this again."
- "So what do ya do to kill time in here?"
"There is a DVD player, but it doesn't work."
- "Hey, Brandine! Pack my evenin' britches! We goin' to Brunei!"
- " I can use the potty now."

That's a lot more than most later day episodes. Plus another thing that has been happening of late is that series have been back referencing much older episodes, this never happened during the doldrums of seasons 11 and 12. It makes Springfield (even if it is in 2013) a much more familar place. Also there are plenty of other daft situations and goofs that make the episode memorable for me like a 9 year old being in Alaska.

That said it won't make my top 50 so discussion is moot.
birdistheword
There's a lot that I don't like about the show nowadays. The absurd bits are no longer funny or clever, plot/story and character motivation were never the focus but they've totally gone to shit in recent years, too self-conscious, the parodies are lazy and unfunny, and the show has an irritating habit of trashing other things (the Family Guy for ripping them off, George Lucas for making the crappy prequel to Star Wars) when they won't recognize their own downward slide. There's the occasional smart, cultural/political satire, but they've become more and more rare.

Also, letting crappy guest stars like N'Sync use their show as their own marketing vehicles doesn't help.
Mitchell
IT's a lot better seasons 14 through now than it was in seasons 11, 12 and most of 13.
birdistheword
The last few have been a blur but I finally stopped watching this season after that stupid episode with Sideshow Bob and his baby. I almost stopped last season, which barely made me laugh, but this season finally killed any desire I have for new Simpsons material.
NumberTenOx
I gave up on the Simpsons about three years ago-- they just didn't make me laugh anymore, and all of the stories were so repetitive. The show is tapped out.
Mitchell
Season seven is out here on monday so that will help me with that season but the thing that is frustarating me is the way in which the show is written. An episode with so many average moments and a not very good story line can have added to it in the re-write room a joke that is so good it almost qualifies the episode to greatness.

The example I'm going to use is "Two Dozen and One Greyhounds" a sketchy episode that overdoes the crazy factor (and is an obvious example of the problem the writing team faced when the order was upped to 25 episodes a season.) It contains a fun but not great great musical number ("See My Vest") I knock at Bart's character from earlier seasons ("This is senseless destruction with none of my usual social commentary") as well as lines like "as years of TV radiation have left your genitals withered and useless." and Burn's reference to Rory Calhoun.

But it also has the stupid dinner as well not really being about much, seems like a treadwater episode for Mike Scully (groan) and I bet the first thing you thought of when I mentioned the title was the song.

However it does contain one of the sharpest social satires that show has ever done.

Lisa: Is that what we do in this family? When someone becomes an
inconvenience, we just get rid of them?
[camera pans rapidly to the Springfield Retirement Castle]
Abe: [picking up phone] Hello? Is anybody there? Aw...[hangs up]

Now everyone laughs at that, it's not funny though is it really. It's a damnation in the way that western society treats it's elderly. Like many of Homer's remarks to his father (Old people are useless, You're a crank, no one like you etc.) as well as the Retirement Castle (THANK YOU FOR NOT DISCUSSING THE OUTSIDE WORLD.)

So i'm not voting for 2F18 although it's one of the best moments. Ever.
