It's funny--I miss it like crazy though every time I see on the far-flung newsstand I realize I've heard nearly all of it already.

I have a few issues my uncle saved before he cancelled his subscription. I found some cool stuff, and there's some amusing writing (ie. Christopher Weingarten listening to Throbbing Gristle for 24 hours and bitching about it), but I can't really see paying for more issues when I find the same shit on this message board.

I wish Whiney well, but their distribution problems, disorganization and poor customer complaint follow-up have soured a lot of former subscribers.

Do you still get a free cd with every issue? I subscribed to it back in 1995/96/97 and still have the cds that came with it.

yeah, that's pretty much it in a nutshell. paper mags can't keep up anymore...

I always thought the R.I.Y.L. advice with each review was spot-on. Miss that the most.

yeah, i miss that. i also kind of miss how their was usually one or two records reviewed in each issue that would escape me via my other sources of info.

i remember signing up for a subscription after receiving a free copy at that first Lollapalooza. back when they used to publish in the skinnier format, like half the size of normal mags. i believe Primus was on the cover of that issue.

You can't beat a free CD.

Ah, nostalgia for the skinny format! Once it went fat, the end was near. By that point, I wasn't reading... only skimming R.I.Y.L. I finally canceled once the CDs started piling up like chores. Couldn't bear to throw 'em out, but sadly, couldn't find the desire to listen.

i used to buy every issue back when it was skinny. i loved that magazine. then the internet came around and i stopped buying magazines. the funny thing is...i liked alot of music that they had on the cds but i dont think i ever discovered a band that i stuck with.

i discovered more music through the company that you could call and listen to previews of cds and then order the cd if you liked it. i forget the name ...it was around 98'. it turned me on to aphex twin...good times....jammin' to the phone.

I bought about a year's worth of them between 99-00. As much as I enjoyed the disc, I found the majority of articles/disc summaries pretty so-so. It wasn't enough to keep me going.
