I should have saved this cake for you. It had about three inches of frosting on all sides and in between the layers of cake. It was about 5% cake, 95% frosting.

i think they are interchangeable. though royal icing is a specific thin goo for decorating... so i think icing is portrayed as the thinner of the two.
