THE DAY I ALMOST WEPT IN THE BRITISH LIBRARY, REDISCOVERED

Sir Brajendranath Seal, Calcutta; to Sir William Rothenstein, London; 1916

"We in India, are by force of our position observers. Many of us are denied an effective participation in the world struggle, but we have a compensation in the privilege of being on-lookers, and, let us hope, also fore-lookers and far-lookers. And we trust that in the rational simplification of life which is bound to come when the wasteful fury has been laid, the still small voice of the East, and in particular of India and China—the one with her vision of the Inner Peace, and the other with her cult of the Social Peace--may obtain a hearing where now the roar or the shriek of death-dealing engines is heard. Your precious gift of the six portraits will always be treasured by me as one of my 'household gods'. As for the dedication to Rabandrinath and myself, I do not know what to say. My friends will say that to steal into the shadow of … with Rabindranath is my luck, for me, it is enough that I possess your affection, a place in your heart, which is one of the very few things left to me as a haven of refuge in a world which has cruelly betrayed an idealist’s first love. But so long as there is Will Rothenstein to look up to, the world is, in spite of disillusionments and heartbreaks, cannot be sullen or forbidding. Yours ever in love and hope…"

Rad. I want to write letters like that. I recognize your post because there's nothing like a history rush and I'm not sure everyone else can understand that. I got one not too long ago when I was reading about the 1580 Auto De Fe (Inquisitorial punishment ceremony) observed by King Philip II in Spain. Terribly interesting and revealing. Nothing so quotable, however.

I dunno-- I haven't listened to anything but NPR in several years (because I am so very old), but this jingle was floating around in the 80's, I think (before I became so very old).

new amazing discovery that will change lives!!!

healthy choice >>>>>>> lean cuisine.

Smart Ones >>>>>>> Lean Cuisine

Healthy Choice (unrated)

smart ones are like the retarded cousin of the frozen lunches.

this healthy choice stemer thing is fucking good though. it actually tastes like chicken. but way too many peas and carrots. gross.

1. The Lean Cuisine "Spa Delights" are amazing. They're probably for women but they're so good... sesame chicken, lemon chicken, lemongrass chicken... great stuff, though not as filling as I'd like.

2. Healthy Choice steamer bowls are pretty good too, though the shitty microwave in our break room refuses to cook them all the way through unless I run it for an extra two and a half minutes. Again, not as filling as I'd like.

3. Above two entrees can be accompanied by a cup of Healthy Choice microwavable soup to make a meal that satisfies. Probably enough sodium to cure a thyroid goiter.

4. You want satisfying? Get the Marie Calender meals when they're on sale. Regularly $4.29 or something like that, can sometimes be found for $2 at Jewel with preferred card. "Inspired by grandma," but if only she knew...

5. Don't even bother with the $1 microwave meals. Unsatisfying, unnutritious, where lunch goes to die.

Jelly needs fridging, unless you're making a VERY big sammich.

Canned stuff doesn't need refridgeration, but then you have to deal with the cans.

You can get away with not refrigerating jelly for a weekend, or stop at Dennys or IHOP & pocket a bunch of those individual jelly packets. You can buy Parmelat or another super pasteurized milk that doesn't need a 'fridge for your cereal. Spam doesn't need a cold chest, and you can always eat Sardine Sammiches.

I kept hearing about Robert Johnson, so I decided to listen to some of his music. What a dissapointment! First of all, Johnson plays way too slow and his music has no beat whatsoever. There aren't even any drums on the record. Furthermore, Johnson doesn't even play the electric guitar so there arent any cool guitar solos. His singing isn't any better, because his lyrics are unbelievably corny and you can't help but laugh at his whiny voice. For some real blues music you should listen to Led Zeppelin because at least he has good songs like Stairway to Heaven. I know Led Zeppelin is a good guitar player because I saw him play on the Song Remains the Same and he can play really fast and good. Robert Johnson's music is completely unlistenable and a can't understand how anyone could like it.

Molten steel kills 32 Chinese workers

At least 32 workers were killed and two injured today when they were buried in white-hot molten steel at a metal factory in North East China, officials said.

The mishap was triggered when a 30-tonne-capacity steel ladle sheared off from the blast furnace, spilling liquid metal onto the factory floor three metres below.

The molten steel engulfed an adjacent room where workers had gathered for a routine shift change, the State Work Safety Administration said.

Rescuers were unable to get closer because of the intense heat emitted from the “white-hot” liquid metal which rose to 1,500 C (2,732 F), according to the state-run Xinhua news agency.

The accident at Qinghe Special Steel Corp in Liaoning province highlights China’s dismal industrial safety record, and came as the government prepared to announce yet another double-digit expansion of the nation’s booming economy in the first quarter of 2007.

It happened at about 7:45 am local time in a factory workship located in Tieling, a city of about three million people in China’s industrial heartland.

An official at the Qinghe crematorium in Tieling told AFP by phone that families of victims had gathered to view their loved ones, but police were refusing to allow them in until the bodies were identified.

“They are going to have to identify the bodies through DNA testing because the victims were burnt beyond recognition,” the official said. “About a dozen family members were outside the crematorium, they were all crying and sobbing."

It was unclear how many people were working at the time of the accident, or whether the workers in the room were ending or beginning their shifts. Two machine operators were also injured.

The safety administration said an undisclosed number of “responsibles” were being investigated.

A steel company official said that police had locked down the factory, usual practice in China when criminal investigations are launched into industrial accidents.

The safety administration said the factory employed some 300 workers, while Xinhua said the plant was relatively new, established in 1987, and employed 650 workers.

Last year the factory produced 70,000 tonnes of steel and had hoped to increase production to 120,000 tonnes this year.

“The provincial and city leaders have arrived to direct the aftermath,” an official at the steel company’s office told AFP. “The whole area has been blocked off by the police, but we’re still working in the office. Obviously we are all devastated."

The official said it was too early to determine the cause of the accident. Industrial accidents occur frequently in China with more than 15,000 work place fatalities recorded in 12,800 mishaps at mines, companies and factories in 2005, according to government figures.
