for me, no other Replacements song packs as much of an emotional punch.

appeals to the Townshend-esque teenage yearning gene in me.

We're Comin' Out
Black Diamond (for some reason I really love their version of this Kiss song)
birdistheword
Johnny's Gonna Die
Kids Don't Follow [even better, their 'cover' of U2's "I Will Follow" with the lyrics to "Kids Don't Follow"...live bootleg only]

Within Your Reach
I Will Dare
Androgynous
Unsatisfied
Sixteen Blue

Birthday Girl (or is Birthday Gal? Can't remember)
Nobody

It's "Birthday Gal".

"Birthday gal..... do you wish that... there weren't quite as many candles...that you had to blow-ho..."

What a great song. And it never even made it onto an album! "Birthday Gal" and "Nobody" are two of my favorite 'Mats songs, partly because they're a great retreat from the raucous 'Mats stuff and because Westerbrg's lyrics on both are just heart-achingly fantastic.

Noone said ROCK N ROLL GHOST.

My Top 10, which probably changes everyday, is like this:

1. Alex Chilton
2. We'll Inherit The Earth
3. Don't Ask Why
4. Go
5. Left Of The Dial
6. I.O.U.
7. Take Me Down To The Hospital
8. I'll Be You
9. You Lose
10. The Last

Songs like "I Will Dare" and "Bastards Of Young" and most of "Let It Be" I have listened to so much it's hard to put them on there, but I love them just the same. The better question is, what Replacements songs aren't worth listening to? I can think of only one: "My Little Problem" although others are probably aren't as smitten as I am and can name a few more.

"Rock 'n' Roll Ghost" is kind of good. Don't hurt me.

Good call.

Also, "Darling One" is a great closer.

If Only You Were Lonely, early b-side showcasing Paul's acoustic leanings he would later perfect as a solo artist.

I think every single good song has been mentioned, so you should be all set, tager.

I think the 'mats have the widest gulf between their great songs and their awful ones, particularly for a band with such a limited discography. For every "Left of the Dial" and "Unsatisfied," there's a "Lay It Down Clown" and a "Dose of Thunder."

I love "Lay It Down Clown" and "Dose Of Thunder."

yeah same, especially "Dose of Thunder." Nothing explicitly bad about that song, it's catchy, stupid (the good kind) and loud. I'd take it over something like "Sixteen Blue", which is the Most Controversial Thing Ever but fuck you.

No, not Paul Simon.

It was left off of either Tim or Pleased to Meet Me.

Sand without a pail
Throwing rocks, your hands in the well
Little toes and colds
Soon it won't be long
Don't worry what you're told
That's my loss
No Easter Bunny and there's no Santa Claus

First you must learn how to fail
Before you're allowed to do anything real
First you must learn how to fail

You're growin' up much too fast
Soon you'll be dating
Boys that laughed
Pulling pigtails
Whatever they'll be wearing in a ten-year rail
Sand without a pail
Playin' with me until I'm too old to see

First you must learn how to fail
Before you're allowed to do anything real
First you must learn how to fail
Before you're allowed to do anything real

First you must learn how to fail
Before they'll let you do anything real
First you must learn how to fail
Before you're allowed to do anything real
(Anytime now)
First you must learn how to fail
How to fail
How to fail
How to fail
How to fail
How to fail
Don't worry baby
You'll do just fine
Don't worry baby
Everything is fine
How to fail...

The obvious answer here is "Gary's Got a Boner".

My favorite 'Mats song is "Kiss Me on the Bus."

I recently discovered custom ringtones, and I made mine "Left of the Dial." But then I decided that song clip ringtones are dumb, and went back to my default ringtone. Although, I'm still looking for the CTU ringtone from "24." The end.

No said "I Hate Music".
It has too many notes.
How about "Tommy Gets His Tonsils Out"?
Cheers,
Janine

OH! How could I forget "Something To Du"?

It was recorded during the Please To Meet Me sessions. I've heard three different versions of it. Here's one of them.

Nah, there are some Mat's songs that aren't that great. I could probably live with never hearing "Dose Of Thunder" again.

I missed this thread somehow, but yeah. Good stuff. Obviously anything you take off of Let It Be is going to be a 10/10 song, and most everyone here has pointed out some gems that might've been normally passed by. (If Only You Were Lonely is the greatest B-side ever written).

wtf is wrong with "Dose of Thunder", I hate everybody.

It's still good, it's just the weakest track on Tim

oh man how cool is this? You can quick-add bold/italic/etc tags with fast reply now. This new board kicks ass oh god jackoff sperm everywhere

Dose of Thunder >>>> Waitress in the Sky, Swingin' Party (yeah sry), Lay it Down Clown

I'm retarded with the Replacements though. I think "I'll Buy" is awesome and that "Tommy Gets His Tonsils Out" is better than "Sixteen Blue".

I third that emotion, though I also want to advocate for the last offically released Replacements song on their last lp, called "The Last."
