Full Version: What Not To Have On SO

Alright. I understand why you devote the last five minutes of the show to phone messages. But in the future, at least do not include people who have nothing to say. Case in point, the woman who called in to defend that schmuck from American Idol. The first mistake was to pay lip servise to that show. The second was to play her message. The only thing she could say was that he might be cgood someday and that Jim and Greg were envious. I realize that part of the hazard of being critics is the you always recieve such mindless drool. But Jim and Greg get paid for this, it is part of the hazards of the job. But please be kind to we listeners. I am sure that most of us never needed to hear such foolishness. Please think of the needs of the listeners.
Thank You,
Janine

There was also that guy who called in recently, and requested that Jim and Greg shouldn't use the word "twee" simply because he, the caller, didn't know what it meant. I wanted to slap him not because he didn't know the word, but that's just an ignorant way to think. Don't use words that I, me, don't know.

After I was on TV, hyping my film festival, we had a woman from another county call the office. She proceeded to tell us that we were discriminating against handicapped people, because SHE was handicapped, and the festival was simply too far away.

Top that.

This story is way to cool to be on the SO side. No one is going to read it.

This made me laugh a little bit actually. (The call, not your comment)

What NOT to have on the show - ad hominem attacks against all the things Jim and Greg don't like, even though they never bother to substantiate those dislikes. Wow - a couple of rock critics don'tlike American Idol. SO WHAT??? The show isn't aimed at them. Wow - Greg doesn't like "mall punk." Jim dislikes GuitarHero. And yet millions of people do like all these things. Is a requirement for listening that we agree with every single elitist opinion that falls out of their assholes?

Good criticism is the art of introducing dichotomy and creating a positivist podium in a theater of relativism. I understand the point about the "attack" phone calls and seemingly ridiculous nature of commenting on American Idol. However, too much recursive analysis could prove everything pointless a-la-nihilism. It is all about where you draw the line on the fair comment canvas. The "dumb" calls, I believe, demonstrate the wide demographic listener-ship of the show, and the "attack" calls further the exploration of the before mentioned dichotomy. Aside, I can not imagine that our two rock critic heroes select all the calls and messages themselves. I am sure there is some radio staff involvement working to tell a story and build an environment that is consumable by the broadest audience possible.
