Just like Kevin Gilbert last year, I'm marathoning today for Jeff. I haven't picked up that new compilation that was released last Tuesday, but I should eventually.

So close to Cobain's death? Come on. They were 37 months apart. He was a talented guy with a sense of classic romanticism in his music. Death enhanced that side of him. Saying Buckley's overrated is overrated. It's not like you see thousands of kids wearing Buckley t-shirts or him topping any "best of the '90s" lists.

He tried to hook up with my friend's girlfriend backstage when he opened for Soundgarden up at Summerfest that one year. Buckley blatantly hit on her right in front of him. She was about 17 at the time.

Took me longer than it should've, huh? I still listen to him constantly, and I'm pretty sure it's not because his death was three years after Cobain's. Every listen takes me right back to every time I ever saw him live and left on the verge of tears. (Or, okay, full-out crying. Shuttup. I'm an emo girl at heart.)

He's one of the greatest "what ifs" in music history. Not only was he young and talented, but he had pretty disparate influences (especially at the time). Sketches and demos of songs like "Gunshot Glitter" reveal a guy who was at heart a romantic, but someone slightly embarrassed by his slick major label love song record who would have done some really interesting things.
Also - for better or worse (and despite all the bad RH knock-offs since, I would argue for better) - there's no "Fake Plastic Trees" without Buckley.

May 30 2007, 03:14 AM
My problem isn't so much with Jeff Buckley himself. In all honesty, I find his voice amazing and he had a knack of writing some very good songs. My problem is with the canonization of Jeff Buckley based on but a fraction of what should've been a long and fruitful career. The guy was never given the chance to show that he could suck, and since his death he's been held up as this beacon of music when in all honesty the most he showed was amazing potential.
My other problem is the handling of his catalogue. Okay, I know Mary Guibert is/was a grieving mother and the album he was working on prior to his death deserved to be released, as did perhaps a live album. But since his death, we've been flooded with;
Sketches For My Sweetheart the Drunk
Mystery White Boy
Live at L'Olympia
Live at Sin-E (Legacy Edition)
The Grace EPs
Grace (Legacy Edition)
So Real: The Best of
The dude's had more stuff since his death than Zappa's had put out since his (almost). You'd think that if you wanted his legacy to remain that of a life tragically cut short, you'd leave it at Grace and Sketches. The pointless plundering of his catalogue is quickly reaching Hendrix proportions.
Pity.
Soundscape
May 30 2007, 06:40 AM
Campaigner, many fans feel that way. Mary's just milking his legacy and name for all she can. Trying to claim the fame she never acquired through him and his father. The same has been thought of with the upcoming biopic.
I guess I don't blame her, but being a fan, I cannot deny enjoying hearing a lot more of his work.
It was not released in the 90's, but written and recorded then, Kevin Gilbert's "Shaming Of the True" I would say is as much of an accomplishment artistically as GRACE. Very DIFFERENT kinds of records of course, but similar in that quite diverse, and profound. It's eery the paralells between the two I find and some others do as well. But far less people know and talk about Kevin as Jeff. I see the two as Icons and Savants of 90's. To me, maybe the two greatest songwriters of the last decade that are this decade finally being discovered (although Kevin to FAR less a degree..unless one cites the Sheryl Crow record back to him).

Sheik's actually not that horrible a songwriter. But Buckley had a wider range of talent and influences that kept him away from that bland border of
Dawson's Creek soundtrack-ness.
I find it hard to say that Buckley was just "potential", when the guy released a pretty great record, some awesome songs ("The Sky is a Landfill" is just a demo and listen to how awesome that song is!) and there's evidence of amazing, amazing live shows.

yeah, anyone who has ever dug even a bit into his live shows knows just truly how much talent he possessed already, fuck potential. sure he likely still had a ton of great songs on him, but he accomplished in 6 years what few have done for me over the course of very long careers.
and at times i prefer the first disc of Sketches to Grace...
