i think i want to share some EPs that i love. anybody else up for this? EPs have always been my favorite format for releasing music, in and out, no filler, just the meat.

i'm upping one as we speak...
السلام عليكم و رحمة الله و ب
Everyone probably has all of mine. I recommend all the Disco Inferno ones though.
Pavement Ist Rad
I would love to do this. I shall get on some.

I might get involved too.

The two that I really want to send....

Afghan Whigs - Uptown Avondale

and

Sugar - Beaster

have disappeared from my collection.

So instead I offer the blisteringly brilliant 3-song Area EP by The Futureheads.

ERIC'S TRIP - The Gordon Street Haunting

this EP came out in 1994, right when Canada was experiencing a surge of underground artists breaking through to the mainstream in Canada. Eric's Trip were from Moncton, New Brunswick and they were pretty much the kings of 4-track recording. very creative use of dynamics, stereo separation, fuzz/noise, and at the core of each song was a sweet little guitar pop tune. when i was living in Ontario at the time, they were like our own little Velvet Underground, but with a background in hardcore and punk. i love that you can hear snot sniffles, lighters, etc in the background.

this EP has a few of their more mellow tunes on it, but the first and last tracks just kill. anybody that likes mid-era Sebadoh, garage, lo-fi stuff, melodic punk, or FUZZ GUITAR will dig on this one...

ERIC'S TRIP - The Gordon Street Haunting

Great description. I'm sold.

Clockcleaner - The Hassler

For anyone put off by Nevermind, the production on this 2004 EP is nowhere near as muddy as on the full length. Although they were still trying to realize their sound at this point, they still manage to pull off 16 minutes of good 'ol abrasive noise rock in the classic vein of Big Black and the Jesus Lizard. Good shit.

Hmmm, great thread to tinker with this weekend. I keep waiting for that SHIP CAPTAIN CREW ep to come out.

D.R.I. - Violent Pacification

Slayer, Napalm Death... it all goes back to D.R.I. Some of the most rackety, ridiculously fast hardcore punk ever laid down. This 1984 EP captures them in their prime, smack dab in the middle of their "classic" period.

THE BREEDERS - Safari EP

this 4 song 1992 EP came out after Pod and just before Last Splash. a couple of these songs were re-recorded for Last Splash, but the real highlight here is "Safari." it's easily my favorite song written by Kim Deal. plus, there's a Pete Townsend cover on here too.

this made me completely ga-ga for Deal. i still love her, even if she is fat now.

Great thread.

Wish I wasn't at work so that I could play.

Homostupids - The Glow

Three songs in 3 minutes and 50 seconds. Overwhelmingly sloppy hardcore. If you dig GG Allin and/or the Cro-Mags, this is a brutal jam.

D.R.I. - Violent Pacification

Excellent choice; great band. Slayer recorded a great cover of the title track too.
Pavement Ist Rad

Les Savy Fav - Rome (Written Upside Down)

This 2000 EP is LSF's first release without two guitars, and holy fuck if it ain't the tightest, most sonically inventive, best damn set of songs they've ever managed to pull together. If you've never heard LSF, this is a great place to start, and if you have heard them but haven't heard Rome, well, you're missing out on some of their best work.

Great idea for a thread.
Hmmm... let me think about this one.

I'll try to put some stuff up this weekend.

great choice paves!

this will work out well, you post the hardcore/noise stuff and i will post the poppy indie rock stuff.

somehow les savy fav seems to straddle these two extremes.

The best EP that I can think of has to be Pavement's "Watery, Domestic" EP.
If there's anybody that doesn't have it, let me know, and I'll add it.
Pavement Ist Rad

Slint - (no title given, although it is commonly referred to as Slint, EP, or Glenn/Rhoda.)

After releasing one of the best damn albums ever and just before quietly disbanding, Slint put out this 13 minute long 10" record, featuring two instrumental tracks that retain that album's fiery intensity (how about them buzzwords?) For a band with as small a discography as Slint's, this thing is absolutely crucial.

And isn't that cover just the best?

Nice, MB... very nice (in ref. to the Trux.)

And yes, Watery, Domestic is the best EP ever. It's just perfect. Maybe Pavement's greatest release. I have the original and Luxe & Reduxe and I'm not even some old person.

At The Drive-In - Vaya

They were fucking awesome. This is prime ATDI, right here, and it's the best they ever sounded on record before some nu-metal producer guy made Relationship of Command one of the most overwhelmingly loud things ever. This thing, though... just quality fucking rock music. Dig it.

"blind luck" is their best moment to date, perfectly fitting the whole johnny cash/joe strummer/fugazi description they always seem to get in their reviews.

Big Black - Lungs

And so in 1983, Steve Albini is introduced to the underground music world through this, the first EP released under the Big Black moniker. Despite the eventual arrival of non-Albini musicians and, at one point, live drums, Albini's basic approach to Big Black's music didn't change one bit after this release, which presents BB's trademark, endlessly influential sound in its rawest form. Aside from some horn overdubs, all of the instrumental duties are handled here by Albini. It's all here, though... the harsh, pounding drum machine rhythms, the crushing bass, the most inimitably brutal guitar tone known to man, and the famously cynical, provocative lyrics. Plus, songs like "Steelworker" and "Dead Billy" remain some of Albini's greatest achievements. A fucking landmark record.

Shudder to Think - Funeral at the Movies

seven songs, 25 minutes, counts as an EP to me. This was the transition from their relatively straightforward rock to the slightly more obtuse, noisy post-punk they messed around with on Get Your Goat. It's got the very catchy "Lies About the Sky", a cover of "Crosstown Traffic", and an early, rougher version of the ultimate classic "Red House", among other things.

OOOOHHH, thanks. I've never gone back this far in their catalogue. If someone ups the Peter EP which might be my favourite ET release ever, they would be my new hero, I only have it on a badly detereorating cassette dub.

I'm toying whether or not I want to contribute something to this thread that no one will want, but that I am willing to go to the wall for. We'll see...

Boards of Canada - In A Beautiful Place Out In The Country

Like the similarly great EP's Watery, Domestic and Rome, BoC's 2000 release has the distinction of possibly being overall more satisfying than the group's full lengths (which are fantastic, of course.) The songs here aren't so different than a lot of Music Has The Right To Children and the then-upcoming Geogaddi, but this four song, quarter hour set manages to just be so concisely perfect. I mean, "Kid For Today"? Does it get much better than this? And "Zoetrope" is just pure minimalist beauty... gah. I love Boards of Canada. You should, too. Good day.

Bang on. That Boards EP is lush and damn near perfect. One of the reasons the EP was created.

Four super awesome power pop songs. Everyone needs this. I dont know if they ever did anything else, but this ep is pretty much perfect. But if anyone has this ripped at a consistent bit rate (my copy varies amongst the songs) then i would love it if someone could up that.

Dillinger Escape Plan - Under the Running Board

http://www.sendspace.com/file/xrt03e

While I've come to love this sort of technical, punishing onslaught, it definitely can become exhausting in a full-length LP. So this is pretty much the perfect way to enjoy DEP--7 and half glorious minutes.

Spoon - Love Ways

So this was their first release on Merge. It was recorded after between Girls Can Tell and Kill The Moonlight, but it was the first thing of theirs put out on Merge (in 2000). Perhaps as a "test" to see if they'd just flop again like they did on Elektra. Sure enough, cause Merge is awesome and people realized that they were stupid for not listening to A Series Of Sneaks, this record did well enough, and the rest is history...
