They ceased being relevant to me a long time ago. The only album of theirs I ever liked was Return of Saturn (I think that was the name) which, if I'm not mistaken, was about the break-up of the ex-lovers.

this one is debatable. their best album is about their breakup and while she does play on it, she left the band immediately after it was complete. i don't even think she toured behind it (i should know, saw them on that tour...)

The Go-Betweens made their best album (IMHO), 16 Lovers Lane, while one of the main songwriters (Grant McLennan) was involved with one band member, and the other main songwiter (Robert Forster) had just broken up with the band's drummer IIRC.
Of course, they broke up after that album and didn't make another for a decade and when they did the two females had been replaced by Sleater-Kinney, but they were still able to function briefly!

Eric's Trip
ET is always my favourite completely heartbreaking break-up story. So, you have this band where the two singers (Rick and Julie) are dating for years. The break up then proceed to make an album. While Julie tends to sing and write songs about said break-up, Rick does the same, but also starts writing about his new girlfriend, even going so far as to name the album "Love Tara" after his new girlfriend Tara S'Apart (Great name, eh?). So, you have Julie Doiron singing songs written by her ex-lover about his new lover. That's got to be as bad as it gets, no?

I can't quite put my reaction to this into words, but I will say that I wouldn't want to try to logically convince an ex to "stay in the band (or whichever artistic collaboration you're referring to)" by using some of these wonderful and heartbreaking examples. Also, it just sounds like a recipe for more pain and sadness if you ask me.
Killer thread, though.
