I've got two pups that are about 4.5 months old. Training them to not go in the house is proving difficult.

SOMBies w/dogs, how did you potty train your pup?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Hips
it's easier to train them to go poddy Outside than it is to train them not to shit in the house.

just stay outside with them until they do their thing. then reward them generously.

In my opinion, crate training is the only way to go.

Yeah it's a pain in the ass...and some breeds are quicker learners. I have a bulldog, and it's not unusual for them to take a year to learn (that's how long it took my guy). Here's the things you gotta do:

(1) Take them out constantly...with a puppy, it can be as often as once every two hours when you're at home;

(2) Use training treats. When they go outside, reward them;

(3) Do not scold or yell at them if you have find an accident after it has happened. Dog trainers regulary state that you have less than 1 minute to reward or scold a dog for their actions. Yelling at a dog after finding it will just confuse and stress them out. On the other hand...if you catch them in the act...scold them and take 'em outside right away;

(4) Continuing that thought, a good way to get them to stop doing any bad activity is a loud abrupt noise. Some people fill cans with rocks and use those;

(5) As someone else said, crate training is a good idea...but contrary to popular opinion, a dog may piss where it sleeps if left in the crate too long. Puppy's bladders aren't fully developed, so make sure the dog is still getting regular walks; and

(6) If you want to get really fancy...some do bell training. Hand a bell at dog level by the door and ring it every time you take the dog out. Eventually the dog will learn to ring the bell when it wants to go outside (frankly, this is too much work for me and my dog).,

Nobodies, I like the can and bell ideas. There are times it seems like they are trying to let us know they need to go out, but it's hard to tell.

We had been using treats when we took them out, but that got inconsistent. We will be getting back on that.

We keep them in the crate, at night, and they can both hold it all night. So I know they are capable of holding it in.

We recently started putting them in the crate while at work. They usually aren't alone durring the day for more than 4-5 hours tops. Seems somehow cruel, but until they stop going in the house, not sure what else to do.

When we're home we let them outside every hour, or two, at the most.

I take them for one good walk 45-60 minutes (depends on how fast I feel like walking) 5-6 times a week.

Read this book. Got some pretty good tips, but it doesn't really cover potty training.

They're good dogs, 98% of the time. Just need to get them over the potty training hurdle.

When I get a puppy, I'm gonna teach it to only shit on our neighbor's front porch.
