The legendary filmmaker Werner Herzog once said that if you wanted to become a filmmaker, you should skip film school. Instead, he said, you should make a journey of 5,000 kilometers alone, on foot, "let's say from Madrid to Kiev."

"While you are walking," said Herzog, "you would learn much more about filmmaking and what it truly involves than you ever would sitting in a classroom. Your experiences would be the very opposite of academic knowledge, for academia is the death of cinema."

Starting next year, I'm going to take Herzog at his word and do it. I will carry a camera, microphone, and essential supplies, and I will walk for months until I reach Kiev. The footage that I gather during this journey will form the basis of a documentary film to be called More Shoes.

On this site I will keep a journal of my travels, with photos.

Funny, I'm assuming you went to LWHS? So did I. My two friends are attempting to coproduce this film(they're trying to raise funds) and they need all the help they can get. I think Casey's leaving on a plane either today or tomorrow to begin filming.

Crazy -- yeah, I did.

I just ran across this yesterday after the piece in the Daily Southtown and got really interested. I really didn't know any of those involved in the filming in high school, but that makes me no less excited to see a fellow Frankforteer trying to pull this off. What year did you graduate?

whoa, a dude that i know from another website donated some money according to the blog.

i might throw him a couple bucks.

edit: i donated. i can't wait to get that postcard.

I graduated in '98. And you?

"excited to see a fellow Frankforteer trying to pull this off."

I couldn't agree more. smile.gif We're all excited and rooting for him. I have no doubts that he can do this on his own. The problem lies in the financing and editing the film into a successful project. It's an uphill battle for those involved. I'll keep you posted as time goes on.

2000 here.

I mentioned to Lee that I may drop off a travelling across Europe mix in his mailbox on Monday. I figure he can't have enough music on a trip like that. Anyway, I'm thrilled to hear that someone on the board is actually involved in the production! Let me know if there's anything I can do.

A bump in case the work week crowd has any interest in donating.

For those interested, he updated the site again.
ryan
Hey, he's still going.
ryan
He's scooting through Holland and the Fellow Traveller Donations have halted. If you've got some extra cash and have any interest in his journey, I'm sure he'd love the help. smile.gif
