I pretty much stopped watching over a season a go. I read a commentary in the Watcher column in the Tribune where Maureen Ryan said that last year there was a scene where Tommy basically raped his wife, and she eventually gave in and enjoyed it. Was Maureen Ryan overstating/misinterpreting the scene, or is that pretty accurate? If so, that's pretty reprehensible...even for fiction.
That's fairly accurate. How is that reprehensible? I mean, these two have been married and had kids forever, he wanted to give it to her hard no matter what, and she ultimately got turned on by it. It's fucked up, that's a given but I don't think it lowers any standard that may be out there for tv. If shit can happen it can be written.
Well I didn't see it so I'm probably not the best person to criticize the scene, but it's reprehensible because it perpetuates the attitude that women are asking for it in certain circumstances. Of course, you can make the same argument that the Soprano's perpetuate the "attitude" that mob hits are a legitimate way to handle business disputes, so I see your point.
That said, I think my problem with the Rescue Me scene may also be an extension of things I've read about Dennis Leary. I've heard repeatedly that he's an arrogant insecure asshole, especially when it comes to women; so I have to wonder whether the scene is truly fiction or if the lines between fiction and reality are blurred.
