After five listens, the album is getting better. It feels more like a Caribou album than I initially thought. At least he is pushing himself in different directions and some of the tracks here are simply stunning.
Some songs aren't opening up, yet, (such as "Sun") but overall I think this album is certainly better than I initially perceived.

this guy is a studio wizard, and a genius. every track is a new sonic adventure. "caribou," ie dan snaith is a treasure of contemporary music.

This shit is ok I guess. I haven't really felt the need to compulsively listen to it. I don't dislike it though. I don't think it's especially profound though either. It's just Dan Snaith doing some dance music.

Still undecided on this.
"Kaili" deserves a massive breakdown and I just keep waiting for it to arrive and it never does. "Odessa" is amazing though, perhaps my favourite single so far this year.

the first three songs and the last song are incredible, and the other five tracks are varying degrees of good. so all in all the album isn't amazing but it's no disappointment. my main problem is that i don't understand why snaith continues to sing. his voice pretty clearly sucks. he has no range and is almost expressionless. he really only sounds good when he's doing a high falsetto and it's covered in reverb and echo effects. listen to how much the guest vocal adds to "jamelia." a song like "leave house" would be greatly improved if he employed that chick who sings on the herbert albums or that japanese ho from little dragon.

I like "Odessa."
I never even heard the last album so who knows when I'll get around to this one.

the Tour CD 2010 is out there now... it has an amazing 47 minute mix from Snaith that mixes all kinds of genres. it also has 6 new songs and i might like them better than the real record.

I fucking love this album. It's quickly becoming one of, if not THE album of the year for me. "Kaili", "Odessa", "Jamelia", "Sun", "Found Out". It's packed full of gems.

Ridiculous, but I only got around to this album yesterday. I love it too. I think it's fantastic, Odessa has been more or less constantly playing since.
Also led me to go back and listen to all his albums again. The guy's amazing, I like every record he's done, took this latest effort me to realize just how damned good he is.

so i am curious why you guys love this so much? it seems unfinished and too minimal to me compared to how dense his other records are...
i guess i am just always comparing what he does to Up In Flames. which is probably my favorite rcord of the 00's.

I've never been 100% sold on this guy's greatness, and I've been listening since In Flames.
That said, I enjoy the new one quite a bit more than the boring Andorra.

it's just different, it's more dance oriented and less sound collage. i think it sounds pretty sleek and tight, i'm not hearing unfinished unless you mean you were expecting there to be more layers. but i do think the two best songs, 'sun' and 'kaili' are fairly dense production-wise and the most musically abstract, more in line with his earlier work.
that being said i don't love this album, but it's a very solid and enjoyable listen. if i had to rank it among his work since up in flames it would be #3 or 4. he's just been batting a very high percentage for most of the decade so at this point it's hard to outdo himself.

Yeah. From reading this thread, I was expecting to the album to sound like some kind of regression and not have any melodies/songs but it totally does. Reminds me of Arthur Russell or like a really good chillwave album (LOL) or something. The production is as great as anything he's done. Maybe you just don't like the dancier rhythms?
I like how Snaith is always moving forward, trying out different shit. I listen to everything after
Up In Flames way, way more than
Up In Flames, though, so what do I know.

Did anybody else in Chicago check Caribou out at Millennium Park tonight? Pretty decent set. The transcendent version of "Sun" totally deserved the massive dance mob that it inspired. There were some other great moments, too, but as was the case with the set I saw at P4k Fest a couple years ago, a lot of the vocal tracks sounded kind of weak with the live band. Good overall, though.
Swim is still great, btw, and Simakos's posts about it in this thread make me sort of angry.

Yeah good show. Not sure if it was the right venue/sound system for what he was doing, but still good.
I like "Swim." Seems like he's sorta torn between being Röyksopp (e.g., "Odessa") and being Cabaret Voltaire or whichever post-punk group he's getting his awkward dance beats from.

so all the tunes i found boring on the latest record are WAY better live... tonite's show at Metro was pretty damn good, even if it was short and the set only included one song from Up In Flames.
and that tour only double vinyl live record thing was 25 bucks. it better be good.

maybe 2/3 or 3/4 full, which is perfect for Metro. you could go anywhere on the floor you wanted and not be a dick while doing it.
