ABBA keys, flighty female vocals that put Regina Spektor to shame, HANDCLAPS, a big chorus, and dozens of little sonic twinkies stuffed in the cracks. This is where it's at.

nice...thanks for the tip on that. hopefully the rest of her record holds up. all too often these first release tracks are gold then the rest of it can't hold water.

If PL was around he'd probably want to call it fluxpop, cuz he invented the damn word. I don't know what'd you'd rightly call it other than pop music. It's firmly in the Scandinavian vein, drawing from ABBA's tradition of tight songcraft and huge hooks, but also from the region's recently revived tradition of guitar slangin' singer-songwriters modeled more on the Dylan/Carole King archetypes. Just from the little I've heard, I'd say she's sort of the Scandanavian version of Regina Spektor, Vanessa Carlton, Michelle Branch, etc. I find this sort of stuff can often serve as a pleasurable golden mean.
Of course, this song is better than all that. What I like most about it, besides the big hooks, are the little smiley-faces penciled all over. It's like the Junior Senior record and those United States of Electronica singles I loved so much, there's something new that delivers a sugar rush each time I listen. My favorite thing so far in this one is the GROUP SHOUTING BIT near the end.

yeah, its upbeat and cheerful, like The CArdigans, rememberthem. somone said sweden and probably scandanavian countries is running music right now. Weren't the early producers or N Sync and Backstreet boys scandanavian, its all good, ABBA are the shit. DAncing Queen is a classic by any standards.

pretty decent.
but i'll take this opportunity to say that even tho his blog is decent, Matt Perpetua is a total fucking GOOBER. bunch of my friends in NYC have met him and said he's seriously the biggest loser/whiner/nerd on the planet. and from having dealt with him briefly online, it doesn't surprise me.
I had no idea. He likes a lot of music I don't (Fiery Furnances) and tends to overhype things in the manner all too common among mp3 blogs, BUT he's hooked me up with so many cool things I wouldn't have heard otherwise that I'd be willing to put up with a lot. If you're going slander the man's character, do it outright. What did he do that was so terrible?
solace
Mar 1 2006, 03:26 PM
yeah... he gets his stuff from the same mp3 forum i'm on, and always has. suppose i can't fault him for having the time and energy to post so much stuff.
it is a good resource, no doubt. but like you, i tend to not agree w/ much of his tastes, and yeah, he does love to overhype often. mp3 blogs, while great for many people, i often can't deal w/ them myself. on the rare occasion i post about an album/band other than Tour Dates, i tend to only post about bands/albums that don't get much press/blog time, otherwise i'd just be doing the same thing as most every other blog out there (posting about the same bands, etc.)
They can be time consuming, I've experienced a resurgence of interest since I rigged RSS feeds through an MP3 label in Google Reader. Now I can scroll right through all the new posts every morning and download whatever may interest me inside of five minutes.
solace
Mar 1 2006, 03:31 PM
like, i love Gorilla vs. Bear, and Chris is such a cool guy, but man i just can't keep up with all of the bands he posts about. there seems to be a good 2-3 a day on average.
same w/ brooklynvegan, love Dave, but he posts so frequently i often miss news.
i guess it's better than posting once every few weeks, but still...

def check out bloglines.com if you haven't yet. think it's def the best online RSS reader. combine that w/ the firefox bloglines toolkit and livelines plugin (or any of the other notifier programs for windows/mac).
i used to use actual program RSS readers, but i like that i can log onto bloglines from anywhere and catch up.

The key is to pimp your ride with greasemonkey and start using the labels. The labels and mouse scrolling combined make it. It's also browser based.

yeah, i've used it a bit, just found it tended to not remember what i'd read and hadn't read from time to time, which pissed me off. that was a few months ago tho, might have improved. i'll check it out again.

QUOTE(simakos @ Mar 1 2006, 03:41 PM)
will you teach me how to do this?
The most difficult part is diggin up the XML/ATOM/RSS address for all the blogs you're interested you. Feed them into an RSS reader and it will consolidate every new post into a central source. Click that edit subscription button in google to start dumping them in. When you create them you can make a label to accompany each one. I have one that's simply mp3. I pull down that label and I get every fresh mp3 post since I last looked in chrono order. You can star them, leave them unread, just like email.

Agreed. But it's improving. I just love that scrolling two-window setup. Greasemonkey dudes have really fixed a lot of the little problems. They've even got an autodiscovery plugin that appears in the corner of my browser when I'm on a blog with RSS. I can click one button down there and BLAM it's in my reader.

Time to revive this thread, because Larsen's album is so disarmingly great. I don't even know what to compare it to, it's so varied stylistically. It just radiates with life more than any pop record I've heard this year. Year-end list worthy, I tell you.

I've never met Matthew Perpetua, but I tend to talk about him as if he's a close friend just from reading Fluxblog. Don't always go for what he hypes, don't necessarily think he searches out the mp3s in places others don't know, but I think Fluxblog's one of the best mp3 blogs for knowing what you're getting when you download a song, plus Perpetua's writing is really sincere, optimistic, supportive of artists, un-egocentric, and pretty decent.
Moistworks is the way to go, though.

She looks like - and kinda sounds like - a cuter version of Natalie Merchant. In fact, if you told me that the song was a Merchant comeback song, I'd be inclined to believe it (w/o seeing the video).
Then again, if it *was* a Merchant comeback song, I'd doubt you or me would give two sh!ts about it, right?
