QUOTE
Do you want to be an extra in the Batman movie and at the same time help 826CHI earn money?

Here is your chance to be on the big screen!

Batman is looking for extras for the movie being filmed in Chicago and they are reaching out to non-profits for casting. For every 826CHI volunteer that is an extra, 826CHI gets $50 a day. So here are the details.

When: Friday, August 24th, Saturday, August 25th and/or Sunday, August 26th (You can commit to one, two or all three days)
Time: 6am-6pm (approximately)
Where: Downtown Chicago location. Exact location will be emailed the day before.

More information: 826CHI gets $50 per person per day (image 100 people each for one day, that's $5000)

* You get to be an extra in the Batman movie
* You get breakfast, lunch and snacks
* The scene is a funeral, a big police funeral
* There is down time (so people can socialize etc, it's not just following directions for 12 hours)
* Each day there is a big raffle and the prizes are good, I Pods, I Phones, X Boxes.....etc.
* You may invite friends to join you as long as they are over 18

If you are interested you must

1. Respond by this Friday, August 10th at noon
2. Email mara@826chi.org

* Full name
* Day or days you are committing too (Friday, Saturday, Sunday)
* Age
* Race
* Male or Female
* Phone number

(Warner Brothers is asking for this information of all extras)

I will email you back when I get more information and the day before with the exact location in Chicago where you will be meeting. Please note you are COMMITTING to this and even though you are volunteering for 826CHI we are COMMITTING to have you there.

Amen. I'll give up one day max for it. Even then it feels ridiculous.

Don't extras usually make $100 to $150 a day? Where is the extra (har har) money going?

I make no apologies for being a very busy and exciting person that cannot afford to stand around w/ a bunch of douche bags that want to get within 50 yards of Heath Ledger or think this is their big break to stardom.

To pay the guy who mercilessly shakes the camera during the fight scenes.

I would be an extra in a horror movie if I could get ripped to shreds, a la Tom Savini. That would be pretty sweet.

yes, you are very busy and exciting. clearly.

it's for a good cause, and that's why i posted it. i'm super psyched for it just because i'm a nerd and cant wait to see the minutiae of life on a set. it's cool to me, whatever, shut up.

Having second thoughts about even doing this for one day. I already have a cameo in the greatest film of our generation, Ween: Live in Chicago. God bless DVD freeze frame.

Based on the description in your first post it is obvious that you will get as accurate an experience of what life on a movie set is like as could possibly be created.

i'm not an idealistic nitwit, i know the dull nature of a movie set and i don't intend on becoming a star, though i do find it funny to pretend i do. it's just a fun opportunity that doesn't come along very often and a good chance to people watch. i guess im the only one who finds these things interesting.

Having been an extra on The Drew Carey Show, I can tell you...it can be a long, long day.

No way I'm driving three hours for this.

Try not to trip over any sidewalks, Gena, or they'll cut you out of the scene.

I might do this on that Sunday ...

I've been volunteering for 826 as a tutor as much as I can during the school year for the past couple of years -- is anyone else on the board also an 826 volunteer? Forgo?

I might go to this just to try to force everyone to leave. That's how much I hate being an extra for Batman.

i just got my confirmation email for this. i have to wear heels, tights and a winter coat, but i'm pretty psyched about it. also, i have to sign a confidentiality agreement and payment waiver. and i am not allowed to ask for autographs.

Were the dress requirements of the extras not part of the confidentiality agreement?

"We just received some very sad news, that we will not be able to send all of our volunteers. We had an overwhelming response and then Warner Brothers cut their production needs by 1/3, so we had to do the same. I apologize for any inconvenience this might have caused.

If you are receiving this email, we no longer can use your help as a Batman Extra."

It's just as well, I was going to back out anyway. Ween tix go on sale that day. Priorities.

So are they only paying $50 per person to charity per day and that's it or are they paying the extras a base pay on top of this?

If they are only donating to charity and not giving the extras a cut, then this is pretty much a brilliant scam on their part. Really, they are saving roughly $100-$150 per person by doing this. Talk about slave labor.

the emails says 65 now, i think they cut the number of extras they needed and raised the cost. in theory, you cna keep the 65 bucks, or you can sign a waiver to give it straight to the foundation. like a good person, and not a douchebag.

i like how you are bringing up slave labor because the word labor really denotes that some work is being done. and as far as i can tell, they are feeding us and letting us hang around for a while. its not like we are children in india making kazaam tshirts.
yancy
If I'm doing something boring for 12 hours while wearing a winter coat outside in the summer, that's work.
HewlettsDaughter
Touche on the slave labor comment.

As for the pay, though, it's not really a good cut. I mean, it's a fun experience, don't get me wrong, but when I did extra work last summer, I got a check for somewhere in the neighborhood of $250 bucks for one day of work with comparable hours.

Yes, I agree that it's a good cause, giving that money up. Nothing wrong with that at all. It's a really noble thing they've arranged. i just think they are shortchanging the pay in order to reflect that they are 'doing a good thing.' Maybe there's more to it than that, I dunno. That's just how I see it on the surface.
forgo
yea, i understand what you are saying,a nd id love for 826chi to get more money, but theres obvs some sort of deal they have that totally explains teh undercutting of the salary. perhaps because they are totally bypassing the casting process or whatever (i have no idea how these things work, obvs) and just letting whomever do this on the good faith that 826chi will not attract crazies (other than me). shrug, whatever. its just a dumb thing to bother the precious space in my head with because i will never know the technicalities behind such an arrangement.
Slackmo
Gena exposes the dangers of using the term "slave labor" literally.

Which no one did. blink.gif

If you have any friends that would like to join you, they need extra people. Many of the people who were supposed to be come tomorrow are Red Cross volunteers and now have other work to do. Your friends, must be 18, and may just show up with you. Please share the wardrobe info with them so they are prepared! I just need to know a count, not their names. Patrick will take their names in the AM.

come on guys!

weren't they cutting people who registered? now they are asking people to bring friends? what kind of operation are these batman people running?

Anyway, isn't this thing a fundraiser for some sort of writing center or something? Funny.
