cool on Dog Day and Network.

Tony, what are your thoughts on the idea of a TV remake of "Network" starring CBS executive Les Moonves?
Tony
I'm not overly fond of the original Network so it doesn't bother me. Both of those Lumets have an audio commentary too which is great. That guy isn't going to be around much longer. Don't dismiss KH&C though its hilarious.
Uncle Remus
Lumet's got a new flick coming out next month with...erm...Vin Diesel in the lead.

not the best month for dvds..march looks a lot better!
history of violence
tales from the crypt vol. 3
a few others I can't remember right now.

And for those of you who can't wait to see Kevin Bacon in bed with Colin Firth, Where The Truth Lies comes out today.
birdistheword
I was disappointed with Network. I knew about it for a long time and saw clips of the most famous scene, but I didn't see the whole thing until two years ago. It's kind of a mess, and maybe a little too broad, not to mention heavy-handed. Maybe the ideas have lost their charm - you can't go a single week without seeing some TV show, newscast, or newspaper regurgitating the same commentary on the media again - but the story really falls apart after the big climactic scene, which is actually 30 or 40 minutes into the movie. The acting's strong, but everything else is kind of a mess.

It looks like Peter Dinklage. That dude's an awesome actor.

As for Kind Hearts and Coronets...I heard rumblings that they are remaking that film? Normally I don't like remakes, but that would actually be interesting to see.

Here's a box set that includes Network, Dog Day Afternoon, and All The President's Men if you're looking for a 70s political bargain

This is also out today and will be in my in-laws' stocking next xmas:

birdisthetheword = OTM about Network.

Dog Day Afternoon - it's been so long since I've seen that one, I can't recall if I enjoyed it or not. I do remember that I preferred the Mad Magazine parody over the film, tho.

And I've never even heard of Kind Hearts - any good? Anyone? Bueller?

What Mad Magazine parody? Are you thinking of the same movie? Gay bank robbers?

Anyway today is Tuesday...

The parody was called Dum Dum Afternoon. Mort Drucker's caricatures of Pacino were paricularly fine.

Early reviews on the newspaper ads say this is Diesel's breakthrough role.

So is the Doctor Who set obscenely expensive?

I'll admit, though I've seen tons of episodes from Pertwee on, that I've seen very little of the 1960s stuff. Even the episodes that still exist in BBC archives. I've seen like two Hartnell stories and one Troughton story and that's about it.

Nice discount on amazon. I'm not a big fan of those earlier ones but this is the first three stories period. Introduction of the character and the Daleks.

I've seen one Hartnell episode on VHS. The cheapness of the sets on the poorly lit kinescopes really dulled my senses, and I ended up quite bored. Hopefully, this set is a bit cleaned up.

I watched this again a few months ago and this movie really isn't that good. the only chilling scene is when the caretaker hangs herself, that part freaked me a little when I first saw it (I was probably about 9yrs old at the time). that scene is memorable for me, but the rest of the movie is lacking in all respects.

Netflix is delivering Basic Instinct 2 and The Matador today.

Anyone know if there's at least some good nudity in BI2?

Certainly not my favorite music from Floyd - it's dominated by songs from the Division Bell - but the photography of the extraordinary lightshow is FAAAAAABULOUS.

Never did see this back in the day, and it's a bit iffy as far as documentaries go. The director spent way too much time setting up tripods + dollys for the camera, which kills the improvised mood somewhat. Fortunately, the 4 disc version has some of the most excellent bonus material ever - material so good that it's totally worth the money. So if you're interested in this, don't waste any on the 2 disc version - spend the extra and have a blast.

Worst album, maybe, but worst video, DEFINITELY. Tons of 80's-esque slow-mo shots of the backing singers. And that terrible saxaphonist, and his hair. And the cheesy dude who lights his cigarette on the laser, while wearing those terrible shades. The band barely even appears in it!

I must get the Pulse DVD, though....even though, after they put in the extras, Astronomy Domine STILL isn't on there!!! mad.gif
