Andrei Rublev. this film is simply outstanding. Tarkovski was in his early 30s when he made it - unthinkable... then the mirror, then stalker and solaris
Artem
i think "Andrei Rublev" is my favourite too. the rest in order of favourites would be something like that:

Mirror
Solaris
Ivan's Childhood
Stalker
The Sacrifice
Nostalgia

i haven't seen his diploma feature yet.

wow, two responses huh.gif ... tarkovski is up there with antonioni as my favourite director. nice thread, Artem.
Artem
i have a similar regard for his work as you do. he's really one of the few directors, like godard for example, who had his own cinematic metaphysics.

by the way, for all the criterion fans, criterion has released "ivan's childhood" recently. it's a very good film. i haven't picked it up myself yet, but i definitely will. i got their version of "solaris" recently and there's a short essay about the film by kurosawa. he mostly retells the story of seeing the film for the first time and meeting tarkovsky. the best part was when they got drunk together after screening of "solaris" and ended up signing the main theme from kurosawa's "seven samurai". biggrin.gif

I've only seen Solaris, but have intended to see more. Sounds like Andrei Rublev should be next.

[If Danse is a big fan of Antonioni, then you've got to trust his opinions!]

stalker sounds like it was a mess to get made but still stands as my favorite...even if this was true:
He was constantly rewriting the script during the actual shooting and during the dubbing and editing.
Artem
he was trying to make it distance it from the original novel as far as possible. just like with "solaris". also, there was a problem with the type of film they used in early shooting, so they had to redo one of the main scenes- the zone scene.

there's a very interesting and useful book about Tarkovsky and his films called The Films of Andrei Tarkovsky: A Visual Fugue. highly recommend it for everyone interested in this director.
