Vote and discuss.

i"m making a list this year only to vote for this record.
_______
well, it obviously came out in 2006. that is fact.

i'm going to rank it as #0, so it's still my record of the year but won't count on the year end poll.

David Bowie just donated $10,000 to Reatard.

People who argue that this is a 2007 release are Reatarded.
Duff.
While definitely an 06 release, I feel it should be eligible, as it's cultural signifigance wasn't felt until this year.

Not that it'll be on my list. That's just how I feel.

i agree wholeheartedly. my top 10 feels lost without it.
Artem
can i vote for an album from 2003 that i've just discovered? it's really culturally significant for me, guys.
Nick
I dig the mega-thread we have going for Jay Retard. I've stated I don't like the album at all, but certainly appreciate a group has totally gone nuts over this thing.

But I have to say, it is really sad how some of you are desperate to be able to type it into your EOY '07 lists. Get a fucking life.

2nd'ed.

Also, it's 2006.

Also, allowing this will open up a pandora's box with respect to other albums released towards the end of 2006 (Blood Brothers etc).

edit: Nick, your avatar is awesome.
Duff.
Well, if we want to ignore common sense, it'd be reasonable to apply a limit on it, releases within, say, the last six months of the previous year, just as an example.

Cool, the I'll just re-vote for half of my list from last year.
Duff.
So long as it didn't make the list last year.

Also, really, I'm not gonna vote for Rainer Maria for the 2007 list just because I really like it. This only becomes a question if the record has a plausible chance of making the SOMB list.

You're basing your votes on whether something has a chance of ranking on the final list?

When SOMBies play dumb.

Look, it seems reasonable to allow certain records that took a while to take off to be included in the EOY. In how it was received, Reatard's record is more of a 2007 release than 2006.

When SOMBies play dumb.

Yeah, it's cute when people ignore common sense and take everything to its worst possible, (il)logical extreme. But the gates of hell will open if we color outside the lines!
BobtheSquid
Hey, I was totally serious. This is a stupid argument. It's just as "logical," then, to say we should be able to vote for Witchcraft's "The Alchemist" because, hey, it achieved its cultural significance in a recent thread, and I'm fairly certain it didn't make the SOMB's 1972 EOY poll.

Just to clarify, Witchcraft is a contemporary band, and "The Alchemist" was recorded and released in 2007.
yancy
Yes, that's exactly the same thing, Bob.

Undercooked Sausage
i really don't want to vote for blood visions and give it a position on my list. this is my 07 list, not my 06, i don't put them together for strategic purposes, it doesn't need any recognition on any EOY list except my own, which i can revise on my own.

i seriously really hope i don't put together my 07 list and then have to put blood visions at #1. Beyond should have that honor.
biggie mcsmalls
When can we start posting our official lists?

I'm done listening to new music this year.
scarymuppet
Come on, folks. Nothing of this on last year's list, and only made an impact this year. Vote for it on this year's list. It's the Broken Social Scene rule.
BobtheSquid
Fuck, I gotta start reading things.
Ted Falconi
Blood Visions did get a few (two?) votes last year, and therefore did appear on the final omnibus tally.

You know how that happened? Because it came out in 2006.
Ted Falconi
Hey how about this, all you "cultural impact" guys: vote for it in the reissues poll.
Artem
people will always be able to vote for it in the decade's list. or we can have a 2000-2007 list.
Nick
I think we should go out of our way to create as many list threads as possible where Jay Reatard has a shot at placing high. That way everyone can quote the entire fucking post where Mitchell or Bill post the album cover, AMG blurb and anything else 200 times w/ their opinion of the album underneath.
biggie mcsmalls
What about Dark Side of the Moon?

It has a cultural impact every year, when a new generation of teenagers consumes magic mushrooms for the first time and discovers this psychedelic masterpiece.

The rules previously was that it had to make the actual list, that is the top 50 or 100 or whatever is posted. But hey, it's up to Paul or whoever does the list. Ted's getting awful bent out of shape about this.
throughsilver
Just do a Top 1 Blood Visions list and be done with it.

People have been whining about how unfair it is that they might not be able to vote on this album for months now. I'm embarassed for you guys, esp. since I told people to listen to it last calendar year, but... Oh nevermind
So you've had the penultimate word. Once we get an official ruling from the pollmaster, everyone must shut up about it.
Agreed?

Unless the 2007 contingent thinks that their 12.9% should be weighted, I'm going to declare victory.
yancy
"Victory" would imply that release dates are the defining word on eligibility. You asked a question with only one factual answer, and most people answered correctly. So... congrats?

Understand: I don't care whether or not this particular album is '07 eligible. In fact, if Paves and Sausage don't want to vote for it, then neither do I. My only interest in this thread is calling you out for being a whiny dick.
Ted Falconi
Got it. Thanks for the clarification.
UselessRocker

I remember seeing that in 2002, SPIN gave White Blood Cells Album of the Year. They mentioned that it had indeed come out in 2001, but it had since been re-released on he V2 label and that it "didn't gain steam" until '02. I guess by "gaining steam", they meant "The British and indie press raved about it last year, but uh we didn't notice, so that stuff doesn't count". The enthusiasm over Reatard is awesome. But seriously, it came out in 2006, people voted for it last year, etc. etc.
