R.E.M.'s Monster, and specifically the head-shaving media-savy "out" Stipe.

Still love them, but a lot of their mystery was gone with that album.

Yeah, I was going to nail them for Shiny Happy People, but I wouldn't say they jumped the shark, if only because New Adventures In Hi-Fi was still to come.

Are you saying that their solo work prior to the movie soundtracks was worthwhile? I mean, sure, that video for "Cuts Like a Knife" was super, and the whole thing with Collins writing a song about the rape victim and the drowning suspect, wonderful, and I guess Sting gets a free pass for a few yrs after the Police broke up, but c'mon now . . .

I'm saying it was a helluva lot more tolerable. Never was an Adams fan, but "Reckless" was everywhere from 1984-86. Collins did three decent to very good solo records before Genesis reformed to do "Invisible Touch". Sting's first few solo records were great, and even somewhat innovative with the work he did in jazz/rock - "Bring On the Night" is a great double live album recorded with some fantastic musicians. That said, I'll take the Police over Sting any day.

Nas-Oochie Wally, or you could say that his problems first started with the Puffy track, "Hate Me Now."
Snoop Dogg's The Game Is To Be Sold, Not To Be Told. (took him a few years to recover from that one)
The Spice Girls ditching pop for modern R&B with the Forever album. Rodney Jerkins ruined their career, and they haven't been heard from since.
Ja Rule's "Everything Between Me and You" featuring Christina Millian. The exact moment where he decided to become a singer, starting a downward spiral that erased any credibility he had left.
Hips
KISS dropping the makeup and releasing Lick It Up.
Jimmy TKB
Metallica's black album.
Megadeth's Youthanasia. Talk about a prophetic title...

Not to say that Radiohead have been horrible since then or anything, but after all that hype and frothing over Kid A they certainly seemed to lose some sort of mystique and they've never really been the same.

Not to mention Alice Cooper (or was that after his Hollywood Squares appearances?) smile.gif . Remarkably, Earth Wind & Fire and Aerosmith (& Steve Martin) walked away unscathed and would save their jumping for later. I don't know what Billy Preston's status was after it, however.

This kind of ties in with jumping the shark. The latest edition was published in 1992, but if you go to Amazon and do a search on Rock Lists, edited by Dave Marsh, there's a section on the worst career moves.

Hell, I'll post them here:

1. Michael Jackson invites his playmates to spend the night.
2. Marvin Gaye tells his father what he REALLY thinks.
3. Buddy Holly convinces Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper to fly ahead to Fargo to get their laundry done.
4. John Lennon makes Allen Klein the replacement for Brian Epstein; George Harrison and Ringo Starr agree
5. Billy Joel divorces his wife-manager, then decides the ideal replacement would be her brother. (This one's for Tony)
6. Mick Taylor quits the Rolling Stones
7. The Clash fire Mick Jones
8. Professor Griff gives an interview to the Washington Times
9. Slick Rick deals with his cousin's perfidy all by himself
10. Ozzy Osbourne bites a bat
11. Elvis Costello describes Ray Charles to Stephen Stills and Bonnie Bramlett
12. Sinead O'Connor gets pissed at the pope
13. Milli Vanilli renegotiates
14. Walter Yetnikoff informs Tom Scholz he isn't working fast enough on the next Boston album
15. Prince changes his name
16. Quincy Jones makes a speech at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
17. Mary Wells leaves Motown
18. The Turtles play the White House
19. Dire Straits spends six years between "Brothers in Arms" and "On Every Street"
20. Graham Parker decides he's in a hurry to release his third album
21. Terry Knight presents his protégés, Mom's Apple Pie, with a great new album cover design
22. David Sancious quits the E Street Band
23. Mick Fleetwood begins managing his own band
24. Al Kooper poses as the Statue of Liberty for the cover of his album, "I Stand Alone"
25. Stevie Wonder writes the lyrics for his soundtrack to "Journey Through The Secret Life of Plants" from the point of view of the plants.

Dinosaur Jr- As soon as Lou Barlow quit

Stones- After Goat's head Soup although Some Girls is a decent record.

REM- Automatic for the People and New Adventures are good records, but really as a band, they jumped after Document.

U2- After Joshua Tree

Strokes- Just did it

Spoon- Might have done it last year

Beastie Boys- Upon release of To the 5 Boroughs

Sonic Youth- After Dirty, but jumped back to the good side after the last two albums

Nick Cave- Upon release of Nocturama

White Stripes- Upon release of Elephant

Talking Heads- Little Creatures

Billy Squire said in an interview that the Rock Me Tonight video singlehandedly killed his career.

Hard to believe that the rock guitar audience would not be into an artist wearing ripped pink & white warm-ups, prancing around on a bed.

If you're into train wrecks, it rates 100 on a 1-10 scale of unintentional comedy.

I'll agree with that although I like "All Hell's breakin' Loose" for Paul Stanley's rap style of singing! and "A million to One" is a great song. The rest of the 80s/90s Kiss was pretty bad with an occasional decent song like "Tears are Fallin."
