The fruit of Dollar Bill Wirtz's loins is already showing he's smarter than his old man.
Let's hope he'll be able to put a competative team out on the ice.

Chicago Blackhawks home games could be returning to television this season, the club disclosed Monday.
In a memorandum sent to employees Monday, Blackhawks Chairman Rocky Wirtz wrote, "Representatives of the Blackhawks met with Comcast SportsNet executives last week to begin discussions about getting some home games back on television this hockey season."
Wirtz said in the memorandum that no definitive agreements have been reached, but televising games are "the appropriate next step to re-energizing Chicago hockey fans, and creating new fans. We are also working on a long-term strategy for televising additional home games in the future."
Wirtz said in the release, "There is no better way to honor his [the late William Wirtz's] effort than to enable as many Blackhawk fans as possible to experience this new era of Chicago hockey."

He was charming, candid and sometimes funny. Rocky Wirtz doesn't plan to hold many news conferences as chairman of the Blackhawks, but he was a breath of fresh air for a fading franchise when he gave his first one Monday.
Wirtz assumed chairmanship of the Hawks following the death of his father, Bill, the club president for 41 years. He already has made two popular moves, removing executive vice president Bob Pulford from the front office and lifting the ban on televising home games. On Monday, the team announced a seven-game schedule for home telecasts on Comcast SportsNet, beginning Sunday against the Detroit Red Wings.
Bill Wirtz long had opposed televising home games, believing it would be unfair to season-ticket holders. Rocky Wirtz said that issue was discussed at Hawks board meetings.
''Absolutely it was,'' he said, ''and the talk stopped about there. We'd have a meeting in a board room, and he'd say, 'All those in favor signify by saying aye. All opposed, resign.'''
Bill Wirtz was criticized widely for his stance, but Rocky Wirtz said they had the same goals -- to create a happy fan experience and to win a Stanley Cup.
In addition to moving Pulford and lifting the TV ban, Rocky Wirtz has brought in Kevin Ryan from the Wirtz Corp. operation in St. Paul, Minn., to analyze the business end of the Hawks on an interim basis. A business manager eventually will be hired.
Rocky Wirtz's goal is ''to grow the business,'' and the TV issue had been a drawback.
''I wanted to do the right thing for our fans and our sponsors,'' Wirtz said. ''The only way to grow our business is to have more people exposed. There's a whole generation of fans who don't know who the Blackhawks are, who have never seen a game. We have a lot of people who would love to come to a game, but we haven't given them a reason to. Now we're going to give them a reason to.''
The home TV package was put together in two weeks. It wasn't easy because Comcast SportsNet had considerable previously contracted programming and a sponsor for the telecasts had to be found. The Chicagoland and Northwest Indiana Chevrolet Dealers Association solved the sponsorship issue, and Comcast SportsNet president Jim Corno credited Wirtz with making the whole thing happen.
''It's something we've talked about for years. We're thankful for Rocky's decision to go forward with this,'' Corno said.
Both Wirtz and Corno said more TV games could be added. Wirtz also said the team is considering to allow home games on the NHL's Center Ice subscription package.
''We're looking at everything,'' he said. ''As far as more games, if we're successful and we're bringing people out, we'd be crazy not to televise more games this year.
''We wanted to jump-start this. The biggest criticism we've had is that there aren't home games on TV. At this point in the development of our franchise, it makes a lot of sense.''
Highly entertaining advertisements featuring Hawks players started airing Monday to promote the new TV package, and Wirtz hopes that eventually will play a part in improving the roster.
''Players like it. They want to go into a restaurant and be recognized,'' he said. ''When [general manager Dale Tallon] tries to sign free agents, they certainly want to say they can be seen in their hometowns.
''It'll also help sell dasherboard advertising. That's hard to see when the only time most people can see it is on the 10 o'clock news.''

2 little 2 late.
The product sucks anyway.
I have been following this team. Those young guys will be traded right when they get good and there is no goalie on this roster. This "new era" will be one of mediocrity. The Hawks have put themselves in the position where they'd have to win outright for a long time and probably get a couple titles to get any sort of a fan base going:
This is not only un-likely: it's may the the universe's only impossible task. A couple home games that nobody is going to watch who is younger than 35 years old isn't gonna cut it. There is no promo machine that can fix this:
Only a true, long term Champion can: and that is an impossibility with the current owners.

No, they're definitely on their way up. When your best players are 18 and 19, growing pains are inevitable, but for the first time in ages, the future looks bright for these guys. And in Toews they have potentially their most talented forward since Savard.

I sat next to Pat Verbeek at the game on Sunday and he said "These kids can fucking play" and he's right. Kane and Toews are an amazing duo and make a game worth watching just for them. They are better than they were, they do need a goalie and maybe one more defenseman (Wade Redden?) and they could be...COULD be...a playoff team.

I never get bored watching that goal. I was at that game and damn, still awes me.
This team has the potential to turn into something good. Not this year, unless things come together all of a sudden, as they're still too inconsistent offensively and defensively night to night. Khabibulin is not a top 10 goalie, but he's servicable until his contract runs out with a better team in front of him.
I'm hopeful Rocky is different, and the fact he shipped Pulford out of the building and is revising the TV policy speaks volumes. You can feel things slowly changing, and if the team puts together a solid season, and comes out of the gate fast next year, it can be a quick build.
I mean, last year's team was pretty much out of it by mid-December, and they still drew 19,000 to see the Leafs and Bruins. They sold out Sidney Crosby's only game in Chicago. People will come out when there's something to see on the ice.
To get back to being a proud franchise, those people have to want to come see the Hawks when they're playing Nashville on a Wednesday night.

What the NHL has to do is stay the hell away from the false hockey markets. Phoenix, Nashville, Carolina, etc. Canada can now easily support three more franchises in Winnipeg, Quebec, and Southern Ontario...in fact, the six Canadian teams, who have sold out practically every game since the lockout, are making the bulk of the money for the league.
Of course, that's not going to happen...how the NHL blocked Jim Balsillie's purchase of the Predators was reprehensible. Sure Kansas City has the building, but folks there don't care about the game. The Hamilton deal should have gone through.

Yeah, it'd be one thing if the playoffs were still divisionally based, but as it is now, it's pointless. And as you said, Crosby should play in every stadium at least once every other year.
The small market Canadian teams got the shaft in the '90s thanks to Bettman's horrible policies, but there are some viable southern teams. Tampa is obviously a good draw, and as much as I hated to see Hartford move, Carolina is a totally capable team.

I moved from the Chicago area to the San Diego area in 2005. I had given up on the Hawks and, in effect, was practically boycotting them. I told myself that when I return to Chicago one day, they will be a different team and this 10-15 year depression will be over.
If I could have made 3 wishes when I left town to move to golden sun sets, they would have been (in order)
#1) For the old man to die
#2) For them to become an exciting, dynamic, and offensive team with "stars"
#3) For them to get some real talent in the front office who care about winning and bringing Chicago back to being a hockey town.
I'll be damned. I don't want to jinx it, but I think all my wishes came true this year. I can't wait to see them when I move back to the Chicago area in the next couple years.
I'll probably get to a game or two this year, but I would be interested to see if someone can relay to me if there has been any change in the stadium atmosphere this year, compared to last year. More fans? louder? blue collar hockey fans in bigger droves? casual fans or die hard fans at the game? etc.

Attendance seems to be slowly improving. 16,234 at tonight's game, and this was a locally televised home game, so a 6-1 rout featuring a natural hat trick should convince even more fans to come back to the United Center. (They were there before: the Hawks were drawing 20,000 a night in 95-96.) One of the complaints is that there's been less of the traditional pipe organ in favor of your typical tired arena fare, but since so many people wrote to the team to request more organ, it's been coming back again bit by bit.
You're going to get some casual fans, yeah, but it sounds like the place gets pretty loud.

The Hawks have been about to acquire any one of these guys every day for two weeks:
Beauchemin

Tomas Kaberle
Kalinin
Liles

Preissing
Brad Stuart
They'd all be upgrades. (Later Byfuglien and/or Barker)
Hopefully the trade is taking so long because the Hawks are going after their #1 choice strategically, and not that they're just desperately bumbling into some nonsense.

Great win last night, but it only moves them half a game up in the standings, essentially. Browsing the standings was depressing: for a while it seemed that even if they were ranked low, it was still tight enough that 8th place was never out of reach, but they're six points out of a playoff spot with four teams to pass. I don't know when the Hawks changed the Indian Head. My guess is around 1999, 2000. It looks like the original was drawn by hand, and the new one was redone in Illustrator or something. I think the original is better: the gold trim helps it "pop" against the red sweaters, and like I said with it being drawn by hand, it just looks more authentic than the more "corporate" iteration. Haha, this ended up going into hockey aesthetics. Gay.
Which logo is better than the Indian Head? The Winged Wheel and the CH are strong, but I think those are elevated because of the uniforms on which they're sewn. The Indian Head is just a work of art by itself.
