Here's a list of most of what I have/have listened to in 2007

http://www.dogear.biz/2007.txt

I'll take any additional suggestions.

Thanks.

I feel like a broken record repeating this.

edit: won't there be an official SOMB thread for this kind of thing?

Someone actually sold that at the store. I think it was the last thing I bought before I stopped buying things. I'll check, it might be on the computer at work. I still have some more organizing to do, I just wanted to get suggestions right away, since it sounds like EOY voting is soon.

there's already the Your Top Ten Albums of 2007 So Far (paraphrasing) thread, but after a cursory glance, I'd suggest Ritter, Maritime, Of Montreal, and quite possibly you'll want to form your own opinion on that Radiohead album.

I like this album a lot in theory, but not so much in its execution. Would much rather hear the Black Flag originals.
Still worth giving another chance.

Ken Andrews - Secrets of the Lost Satellite
Earlimart - Mentor Tormentor
Charlotte Hatherley - The Deep Blue
Kiss Kiss - Reality Vs. the Optimist
The Most Serene Republic - Population
A Whisper in the Noise - Dry Land

The SFA album, Hey Venus! seemed to come and go with little fanfare, but it's pretty damn good. They calmed down from the silliness of the last two albums and made some straight-up Beach Boys/Beatles pop. Probably won't be in my top twenty, but will make my list. Their best since Rings.
r.i.p.
I'm sure how these rank on the dead-horse-beater-ometer, but they're all "smaller" albums I really enjoy:

Electrelane - No Shouts, No Calls (their best. 'Cut & Run' is beautiful.)
The Explorers Club - EP (beach boys, zombies geeks)
Black Moth Super Rainbow - Dandelion Gum (like Air on Stones Throw)
Holy Fuck - LP (hyper, punk krautrock)
The Clorox Girls - J'aime Les Filles (power pop, producer of the Exploding Hearts)
Teki Latex - Party Au Plasir (neon french pop from fat guy in TTC, with Gonzales producing)
Taken By Trees - Open Field (girl from The Concretes with 2/3 of PB&J)
Arp - In Light (analog kraut electronics from guy who left Tussle)
Ferraby Lionheart - Catch the Brass Ring (lovely, Harry Nilsson influenced LA songwriter)
Brother Reade - Rap Music (rap music)
Kassin +2 - Futurismo (Modern tropicalia from Moreno Veloso's trio, with John McEntire assistance.)
Bumps - Bumps (the 3 drummers from Tortoise... drumming)

This album reminds me of what would happen if you mixed Pink Floyd with more orchestral sounding bands such as the Arcade Fire and perhaps a more modern sounding ELO. Several of the songs mix the sounds of synths and keyboards with horns nicely. The first track "No Love In Your Heart" starts off with a few seconds of violins and then builds up into a swirling, chaotic, layered wall of mesmerizing sound. It seems designed to grab your attention in almost the same way that the first track of Dark Side of the Moon does with the ever loudening heartbeat and other noises.

There are also lots of little weird noises in the background and unexpected instruments to keep things interesting. The sounds of old typewriters, tv channel changing, odd distortion, tv static and echoey vocals are scattered across the album.

It's melodic and also rocks. A fun and interesting listen. If you enjoy rock bands that go beyond the standard instruments of drums, bass and guitar, you should get this album.

I actually wasn't too hot for it until last week (and it leaked in January), but it actually has some nice things going on with it. The Deep Blue title is on the mark, as there's something very... watery about how the album sounds. Definitely works better as a complete listen though.

A testament to why you should never judge a band by their name.

If it were just for their name, I never would have listened to this, thinking it would be a vacuum from which neither light nor fun could escape.
Turned out to be really rad.

If I were voting today, I think it would be my #1. I've been waiting for something else to come along and induce more smiles, toe-taps and sing-alongs than Field Music has, and while a few have come close, it just hasn't happened yet.

I'll be pimping here, there, everywhere some of my more obscure favorites. But anyone who likes well-written, well-played, well-produced pop music would be wise to start here.

I third the Dinosaur Jr. record, absolutely essential.

Also, didn't really check the list for all these but they are must-hears:

Akron/Family - Love is Simple
Great Lake Swimmers - Ongiara
Iron & Wine - The Shepherd's Dog
Jens Lekman - Night Falls Over Kortedala
!!! - Myth Takes
Robert Plant and Allison Krauss - Raising Sand
Feist - The Reminder
Bill Callahan - Woke on a Whaleheart
King Kahn and the Shrines - What Is?!
Andrew Bird - Armchair Apocrypha
John Doe - A Year In the Wilderness
Battles - Mirrored
r.i.p.
I forgot to mention a couple of fabulous girl group/ye ye nostalgia trips:

Candie Payne - I Wish I Could Have Loved You More

Fabienne Delsol - Between You And Me

The former is from Liverpool and tied genetically to members of other Deltasonic groups. She seems very into Bond themes.

Also, I recently upped this, which has been out in the UK for awhile. I'll probably be pimping it in EOY threads, as I've quickly fallen in love with it.

Candie Payne - I Wish I Could Have Loved You More
CODE
http://www.sendspace.com/file/ahcvx9

Loverly, heartfelt and heartbroke songs given a retro 60's UK pop vibe, that nonetheless sounds modern enough to be mistaken for Broadcast, Portishead or Stereolab in spots. Fair warning: most of the Candie Payne files are 128 kps mp3's. Sorry, but that's what I pulled off the web.

I think I said somewhere I liked Candi Payne. Title track was on my last quarter mix.

Ten great ones:

Akron/Family

Mark Sultan
King Khan & The Shrines
Burial
Valerio Cosi
Josh Ritter
Supersilent
Paul McCartney
White Rainbow

Not the ten, mind you.

Just ten.

All-over-the-map British art rock, with about 50% of it leaning towards Madchester dance rock, and the other 50% covering everything else: 70s prog/space rock, shoegaze, Beta Band-like experimentation, krautrock, etc etc. If you like Primal Scream, you should like this. This release is 2 discs that combines their debut album from last year, an EP from earlier this year, and about an album's worth of unreleased/new tracks. It's long and it's messy and it's highly recommended.
vurt
Hmmm that Candie Payne sounds intriguing. Hearing about things like this and going back to something like Tones of Town is the whole reason these EOY lists kick so much ass. It's been a hell of a year, though.
